Building Civic Space

At 14th Street and Pearl Alley, just across High Street from The Ohio State University campus, the new WOSU headquarters and studios is emerging. Though we’re over a year from a grand opening, we’ve spent many hours thinking about the needs of that neighborhood and our community. From the earliest brainstorms, all of us at WOSU became convinced that we should create an innovative public space to bring the community into the building.

In a world of people staring at screens, we’re gaining a new appreciation for the physical places where people gather and authentically connect. We’ve imagined – and we’re now building – a large, open and easily accessible community studio designed to foster public engagement and encourage the exchange of information, views and ideas. We’re taking our cue from the libraries of Columbus, where in-person visits are among the highest in the nation per capita. People want to connect and learn!

In his book, Palaces for the People, Eric Klinenberg calls for a growth in these shared environments where cities can build “a social infrastructure,” places where people have a shared experience. When done right, these “civic spaces” bring people together for genuinely affirming and enriching moments.

WOSU’s new civic space, the Ross Community Studio, will present over 200 events annually – including discussions, demonstrations, performances, screenings, workshops, and even festivals – that allow us to connect the richly diverse communities of Central Ohio. We can extend these activities to others through livestreaming on the web or broadcasts on radio and television.

It’s a new, dynamic model for a media organization. We look forward to inviting you to 14th & Pearl Alley for participatory and interactive experiences. Perhaps you’ll meet a new friend or reconsider a long-held opinion or enjoy a performance.

Meantime, if you have thoughts or ideas you’d like to share, please reach out and connect with me directly at [email protected].

DiMarco Family Kids Day

The Ross Community Studio will be an innovative civic space filled with lively discussions, engaging performances and educational workshops. And once a month it will be a place of laughter, fun and learning thanks to the generosity of Ann and Tom DiMarco.

Parents of young children have limited opportunities to enjoy entertaining, interactive learning experiences as a family, particularly when you factor in cost. WOSU’s new headquarters will make it possible to offer free and exciting programs for children and families. The DiMarco Family Kids Day at WOSU Public Media will be a fun, free program taking place every month in the new Ross Community Studio.

Ann and Tom became members of WOSU Public Media shortly after moving to Columbus in 1993. Since then, Ann has become a dedicated volunteer and a member of the Friends of WOSU Board. When they learned about the new headquarters, Ann and Tom looked beyond the physical space at what could happen inside the building.

Ann and Tom DiMarco tailored the focus of their gift to match what is important to them–families and children. Their generous gift not only supports the building but also provides program funding for the inaugural three years for Central Ohio families. Each month will feature a unique learning theme that combines imagination, interaction and technology to explore art, science and reading. Children will experience learning through characters children already know and love, such as Clifford, Curious George and Peg+Cat.

Join Ann and Tom in shaping the future of public media in Central Ohio. Contact the WOSU Office of Advancement at 614-292-9678 or [email protected] to learn how your gift can make a deeper impact!

“We are so excited for WOSU’s new headquarters and the programs that will happen because of

this new space. When we were asked to support the building and to create a monthly kids day

series, we knew we had to do it.”

– Ann DiMarco

ImpeachmentWe don’t know where the impeachment path will lead, but 89.7 and NPR will cover every twist and turn – often as events are happening. 89.7 NPR News will provide live coverage of House impeachment hearings and a US Senate trial of President Trump. NPR’s experienced political team will deliver context and analysis; WOSU’s news team will bring you reaction from Ohio lawmakers and residents.

Campaign 2020 The presidential campaign is months old, but election year is here, and the fun really begins next month in Iowa and New Hampshire. The fight for the Democratic nomination appears wide open, and Ohio could play a pivotal role in picking the nominee as well as deciding whether President Trump will be elected to a second term.

14 For detailed listings, visit wosu.org

Primary Fight in Ohio’s Third District Ohio’s Third Congressional District heavily favors the Democratic candidate, so the fight for the Central Ohio seat will come in the primary. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty faces a challenge from political newcomer Morgan Harper. Beatty seeks her fourth term while Harper has returned to her native Columbus from Washington to mount a challenge from the left. Beatty has fortified a strong base while Harper has the support of progressive Democrats who support Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

Ohio State’s Next PresidentMichael Drake has announced he’ll retire in the next year, so the search is under way for the next leader of Ohio State University. Speculation began immediately about who will be OSU’s next president. Will it be a former politician, a well-known businessperson or a highly regarded academic leader? The choice will affect tens of thousands of students and university employees.

Classical 101 January Programming

The Toll Brothers Metropolitan Opera broadcasts continue in January with three bona fide favorites and a new production of Alban Berg’s shattering tragedy Wozzeck.

The color and sparkle of the holiday season continues just a bit longer with Richard Strauss’ tuneful Der Rosenkavalier on January 4. Verdi’s La Traviata takes the stage January 18 and a performance of Puccini’s La Boheme on January 25 finishes out the month.

On January 11, it’s music by Alban Berg. Following his great success with Lulu in 2015, South African artist William Kentridge has been invited back to the Met to create a new production of Berg’s Wozzeck, set in a pre-World War I environment. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium and baritone Peter Mattei makes his highly anticipated role debut as Wozzeck.

Catch Met broadcasts every Saturday in January at 1pm.

Concerts at Ohio State returns for its seventh season on Classical 101 starting January 5. Be listening Sunday afternoons at 1pm for performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music at OSU.

Highlights this month include the OSU Symphony Orchestra and conductor Miriam Burns playing Elgar’s Enigma Variations and the Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D, plus the OSU Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds playing Dvorak’s Serenade in d and Milhaud’s La creation du monde. Also, the OSU Women’s Glee Club performs Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and a two-piano version of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

One of our local productions is gaining an encore broadcast. Symphony Showcase shines the spotlight on orchestral repertoire, from the great symphonies to new discoveries. Hear performances from great orchestras

past and present, led by some of the most celebrated conductors, often with stellar performances by featured soloists. January 2020 will be a Mozart Fest!

Beginning January 5, you’ll have two chances to enjoy Symphony Showcase with host Kent Teeters Sundays at 6pm and Thursdays at 7pm.

Rescue yourself from the January blahs with vivid music on The American Sound. Two stunning works for violin and orchestra jump from the silver screen and onto the airwaves – Korngold’s Violin Concerto and John Corigliano’s Red Violin: Chaconne for Orchestra. Also enjoy moving choral selections by Josiah Kelley Alwood, Robert Kyr and Eric Whitacre and a trip out west with Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite.

Join host Jennifer Hambrick for The American Sound, Saturday evenings at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm.
