Canada 4H Community Service Project From February 13, 2007 “Palo Alto Daily News”, Writer - Mark Abramson, reprinted with permission Teens in the Canada 4-H Club took time out from their homework and hanging out with their friends Wednesday night to help the homeless Five members of the Redwood City-based group, with the help of several Peninsula businesses, put together 150 "shower kits" that consist of shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other items packed in pairs of tube socks.

The children are scheduled to deliver the kits to the Fair Oaks Community Cen-ter and Red Morton Community Center in Redwood City today. St. Vincent de Paul will help distribute the kits and will provide "shower tickets" to the people who receive them, allowing them access to showers.

"It was fun, it was easy to get all the products and it helps out," said Nikki Ellis, 17, a senior at Woodside High School.

Brianna Weiss, 15, a Woodside High sophomore, said she thinks the homeless will like the socks the most because of the cold weather.

"I thought it was really great because I have never done anything like this," Weiss said. "We spent weekends (collecting the items for the kits). We missed hanging out with friends. It was fun working together and getting to know each other better."

The Westin, Sheraton and Four Seasons hotels in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto contributed items -- such as travel-size soap and shampoo -- to the effort. Safeway and Albertsons donated $20 gift cards to buy some of the items in the kits and other area busi-nesses helped out as well.

"We had a supply left over and we decided to donate for such a great cause," said Sheila Correa, sales manager at the Westin and Sheraton. "It was just a great opportunity to help."

This is not the first time the Canada 4-H Club has played good Samaritan, said Kathleen Ellis, Nikki's mother and a 4-H project leader. The kids have also cleaned up parks, worked at a food pantry for the needy and have put together a holiday party at the Clara-Mateo Alliance homeless shelter in Menlo Park.

"We kind of shake it up a bit and have them do a bit of everything," Ellis said "This is more personal," Nikki Ellis said of the shower kit project. "I think it is nice to know (the homeless) will receive it in a time of need."“

Pictured above :Brianna Weiss (from left), 15, Brenna Fitzpatrick, 15, Randi Sturm, 15, Shelby Ellis, 15, and Nikki Ellis, 17, all students at Woodside High School and members of the Canada 4-H club, assemble shower kits to be donated to the homeless in Redwood City.

2007 Japanese Exchange Month-long Hosting Program, July 22 to August 18

The California State 4-H Youth Devel-opment Office is looking for families who would like to host a Japanese youth in their home for one month this sum-mer. This is an opportunity for a family to experience a different culture and heritage and increase their understanding of themselves and the world they live in.

Enthusiasm is the main qualification. You don’t need a fancy home or a separate bedroom to host, just a desire to make room in your lives for a new family member. You don’t need to spend a lot of money or time traveling the U.S. – the students aren’t here as tourists. They are here to live with your family and participate in your normal summer activities. The costs are minimal and the youth come with their own spending money and medical insurance.

The Japanese youth range in age from 12 and 17 and partici-pate in the Labo youth development organization in Japan. The month-long exchange runs from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, August 18. Youth are matched with a family with a child of the same gender and close in age that shares common interests. The delegation comes with two chaperones who live with two different host families for 2 weeks. The chaperone host family does not have to have children in the home.

Applications are currently being accepted with the hope that all the students will be placed by mid-May. Families that apply early in the process have the opportunity to select their student from a group of applications.

Please consider offering this priceless educational experience to your family. Teens that participate in exchange opportuni-ties are better prepared for life in a global society. Through this first-hand experience they gain a deeper understanding of another culture and gain insight into the values and lifestyle of their own family and community.
