Mission SystemMission Pueblo Rancho Presidio

•Were set up for religious purposes.

•The word Pueblo is Spanish for village.

•Crops are grown and animals are raised.

•The word Presidio is Spanish for fort.

•The men farmed and cared for the animals.

•People living in Pueblos grew food for the soldiers.

•Ranchos were often used to raise large numbers of livestock.

•Presidios are homes to solders and settlers.

•The woman cooked, sewed, gardened and made candles and soap.

•Ranchos replaced missions as the center of the area’s economy.

•Presidios became centers for trading.

Problems at the Missions• California Indians couldn't

leave the missions.• They had to follow

Catholicism, the religion of the Catholic Church.

• Many died form diseases, like measles and smallpox Europeans brought.

• California Indians destroyed San Diego in 1775

• California Indians never joined a mission after that.
