Last month Smithfield, Atherton and Trinity Bay State High Schools’ instrumental students joined together in a camp at Mungalli Falls. Guest music instructors were John Morrison and Jacki Cooper being assisted by Jason Fox, Nathan Christodoulides and the other band teachers.

We had great fun up at Mungalli Falls and it was very pleasant. Some people did body percussion which is when you use your body as an instrument. It was cold but I’m used to the cold. I made lots of new friends and some of my them had a great sense of humour. I really like Mungalli Falls because you can relax and hang out with friends. I would help out the grown ups to see if they needed any help and I was extremely organised on the camp. The Mungalli Falls Staff cooked the food and it tasted really good and we had ice cream for dessert.

There was lots of mist everywhere and it was blocking the mountains but it cleared up in the end. We got the opportunity to play other instruments such as saxophone, clarinet, etc. I saw a platypus in the late afternoon, it moved really quick. We all had a little chat and got really good sleep except for the boys because their alarm kept going off every twenty seconds or every hour on the second night.

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to our August newsletter. Last month I highlighted the pending delivery of two hundred and forty new laptops to our school.

I can now confirm this will occur later this term. We have been busy working with staff and the P & C to make decisions on how to deploy these laptops.

Our recommendations will be as follows: • The current Year 8 students will be issued with a laptop from the beginning of Term 4 this year. There will be

a take-home program for these students • These students will have use of this machine for the remainder of their time at Smithfield High • There will be some costs to families—we are thinking around twenty-five dollars per term for the take-home

program (Year 9 to Year 12 = $400!!) • From the beginning of 2012 another year level, likely to be our 2012 Year 10 cohort, will be issued a laptop as

well. This is all currently in the planning stages and we will conduct a range of communication processes to keep parents, teachers and students up to speed with this program.

Just giving the students a laptop will not in itself aid learning but, what counts is: • The students and teachers know when and how the laptops are best used for learning at school • The student will have ‘after-school’ use which includes internet connectivity built into the laptop. In other news, as it is now halfway through the term, I have asked staff to give each student feedback on their progress in each class! You should ask students to show you this feedback as it is crucial they, and you, know if they are progressing positively this semester.

Year 11 camp is on this week! I am sure it will prove both educational and enjoyable. Mr Jarman (Year 11 Co-ordinator) has been doing a wonderful job preparing for this camp. Many thanks to him.

I would also like to wish our Year 12 OP students good luck with their QCS tests which will be held on 30 and 31 August. The have been well prepared and I am confident they will do well.

Finally, can I remind you all the “Every Day Counts” towards getting a good education. I am still noticing too many unexplained absences and lateness to school. This is not acceptable. We need your support in getting students to school on time, every day. The results are worth the effort! Until next month, Barry

MMUNGALLIUNGALLI COMBINEDCOMBINED SSCHOOLSCHOOLS BBANDAND CCAMPAMP continued I learned how to do body percussion, how to tune myself and keeping in time with the beat. It was such a great experience that anyone can have in a lifetime. I would like to thank Mr Fox for organising the camp and I would also like to thank my mum, Chris Chapman, because she helped out and told me to go and hang out with people my own age. CCAIRNSAIRNS RREGIONALEGIONAL CCOUNCILOUNCIL SSISTERISTER CCITIESITIES YYOUTHOUTH AAMBASSADORMBASSADOR PPROGRAMROGRAM The Cairns Regional Council Sister Cities Advisory Group has agreed to the establishment of the Cairns Regional Council Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Program. The purpose of the program is to promote international understanding and friendship, and to give young people a chance to experience another culture first-hand. As they are learning, they will also be teaching the people they meet about their country, their culture, and their ideas. They will be Youth Ambassadors, helping to bring the world closer together and making some good friends in the process.

Smithfield State High School was accepted to be part of the program and recently hosted Japanese school student Sayaka Homma from one of Cairns’ Sister Cities, Oyama. “Saya”, who is seventeen years old stayed with a local family and was buddied at school by Sophie Jones and Tara Rodell. Tara is learning Japanese and had the opportunity to hear Saya’s precise Japanese enunciation.

“Hello everyone. I am Saya. I’m from Japan and I stayed at SSHS for a week. This week was very nice for me. I had a very happy week because of you. Thank you so much!”

NNATIONALATIONAL GGEOGRAPHICEOGRAPHIC CCHANNELHANNEL AAUSTRALIANUSTRALIAN GGEOGRAPHYEOGRAPHY CCOMPETITIONOMPETITION

Recently our Year 11 and 12 Geography students took part in the National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition. The competition attracts 80 000 students around Australia. As part of the competition students were required to demonstrate their knowledge about global issues, with questions on the major flooding in Pakistan, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, asylum seekers entering industrialised countries and regional trade.

A number of our students gained impressive results in the competition with Rhys Sharry receiving a High Distinction, putting him in the top 1% of students in Australia. He was the top Year 11 student in Queensland and this means he has won an all-expenses paid trip to Melbourne for a week in early October. Well done Rhys. Rhys is photographed with Dr Steve Weller, JCU and his mum, Susan.

Three Year 12 students – Sandy Lim, Telia Lennon and PJ Marczuk received Distinctions, pictured bottom left.

There were also a number of students who gained a Credit, putting them in the top 25% of Geography students in Australia.

PPLANETLANET AARKRK TTREEREE PPLANTINGLANTING A big thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who came along to the Tree Planting Day on Wednesday 28 July! The event was co-ordinated by SSHS’ Wildlife Club and was a huge success. Over all we planted more than thirty trees and native shrubs. The trees were kindly donated by Cairns City Council and native shrubs were donated by Bunnings Smithfield.

We would also like to say thank you to Bunnings Smithfield, who have gone above and beyond to not only donate some beautiful shrubs for the wildlife garden, but also some m u c h n e e d

mesh, gravel and gardening tools to finally get our frog pond up to scratch. Bunnings has also donated paper recycling bins for all our staff rooms, which will be decorated by SSHS Wildlife Club students and dispersed to staff rooms at the end of Term 3.

Via an audition process in term one, these students were successful in gaining a place with thirty-one other Dance students from the Far North region. Together they rehearsed several long hours both in Cairns and Brisbane, before performing in four shows. Having spent seven days in Brisbane doing fifteen hour days, these students did a spectacular job in representing our school.

A huge congratulations to each and every one of them.

SSCIENCECIENCE AATT SSMITHFIELDMITHFIELD

This year over 300 students from 6 local primary schools attended SCIENCE AT SMITHFIELD on Thursday 28 July.

SCIENCE AT SMITHFIELD is a Science Fair held in partnership with James Cook University and was held on Smithfield State High School’s oval. Year 7 students from Trinity Beach, Caravonica, Yorkey’s Knob, and Freshwater State Schools attended, as well as Year 7 students from Holy Cross & Trinity Anglican primary schools.

The purpose of the day was to engage students in hands-on science activities and to help develop the natural curiosity in how things work. That is an essential part of being a scientist. The students had a chance to make their own ice cream, and learned about depression of freezing point while doing so, as well as learning about acid-base chemistry while making sherbet. For those with a more artistic bent, there was an opportunity to make and use paints while learning about emulsion chemistry and there was even a stall where students could investigate the effect of biochar on the rate of plant growth. Biochar is essentially charcoal and is made by burning combustible material with limited oxygen available. The charcoal effectively locks carbon atoms into its structure preventing release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. It also has the added benefit of improving plant growth when mixed into soils. Several stalls explored the physics of flight with activities making and launching rockets and planes, plus there were many more activities.

Smithfield State High School has strong links with both the Education and the Arts and the Earth & Environmental Sciences faculties at James Cook University. Of the eighteen stalls at the science fair this year, half were provided by James Cook University Graduate Diploma of Education students (trainee teachers). The other stalls were provided by Ms Johnson’s Year 9 Extension Science students who are taking part in a trial with James Cook University’s Education and the Arts faculty to use more authentic assessment items. In life we are generally judged on our performance in tasks that need to be done, not on exams put in place for the sake of testing. Ms Bryn Johnson’s Year 9 class were graded on their science fair stalls instead of sitting an exam and have been carrying out research and testing of biochar alongside a PhD student from the Earth & Environmental Sciences faculty.

A huge thank you is required for Dr Cliff Jackson at James Cook University and his team of students and to Smithfield State High’s Ms Johnson and her 9B extension class, who prepared and manned the stalls. The input of our CoastFM Radio Broadcasting students was greatly appreciated. As well as providing fantastic music, they took small groups of visiting students on tour of the radio studio where they engaged in live-to-air interviews which were heard on the oval. The P&C took the opportunity to fundraise with a sausage sizzle and they were ably assisted by our school’s Hospitality students.

The day was a great success, and was enjoyed by all.

EDUCATION QUEENSLAND INTERNATIONAL - STUDENTS Year 10 students who arrived in July to study and stay with our families:

Niklas Buddensiek

I’m Niklas, but just call me Nik. I’m 15 and I come from Koblenz in Germany. My hobbies are playing the trumpet, meeting friends, playing chess, listening to music and watching movies.

Maren Sokolowski

My name is Maren and I’m from Germany. I live in a city near Cologne called Bochum. I have come to Australia because I think is it very beautiful. I hope I will

have a nice time here and have much fun with new people.

Julia Hoffmann

My name is Julia and I’m 15 years old. I’m from Germany, a very little town near to Heidelberg called Hemsbach. I will stay in Australia for the next 6 months. My hobbies are listening to music, reading books, playing on the internet and, of course, meeting friends. I have a little brother in Germany and he is nearly 12 years old. I’m looking forward to being friends with everyone and hope we will get along well.

AASPIRATIONALSPIRATIONAL LLEARNINGEARNING Emelie Watson, Smithfield State High School’s Dux of 2001, returned to school for a visit recently as she is now studying for a Graduate Diploma of Education at Queensland University of Technology.

The past ten years have seen her lead an aspirational life!

After being awarded a “Ford Women in Engineering” scholarship in Year 12 Emelie studied for her Bachelor of Engineering at University of Queensland, majoring in Machatronic Engineering. She graduated with first class honours.

To enhance her south east Asian travel adventure Emelie volunteered with building houses and also at an orphanage for disabled children in Vietnam. She visited China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Malaysia.

On returning to Brisbane Emelie worked as an ecologically sustainable design consultant advising government, architects, engineers and developers.

Emelie’s current ambitions are to be an inspiring teacher and teach students valuable life skills. She is enthusiastic to keep changing the world, to improve equity for all people and to maintain our environment for future generations of all living things. Emelie is now married and looking forward to having children.

And to current Smithfield students Emelie says, “challenge yourself to achieve your goals. There is no weakness in failing when you are striving to do what you believe in.”

“I had a great time at Smithfield High. Teachers like Mr Kennedy and Mrs Harrison encouraged me to work to my potential and, to this day, I still remember what they taught me. I made some good friends who I still keep in contact with. I also enjoy looking back at the time I spent with my friends in the band and at school carnivals. I believe that the quality of teaching, the collaborative ethic of the school and students and the range of extra-curricular activities at SSHS has really helped me to succeed in my endeavours and to be the person I am now.”

SSMITHFIELDMITHFIELD SHS OSHS OPENPEN RRUGBYUGBY LLEAGUEEAGUE

Last semester the Open Rugby League team competed in the strongly contested 2011 Cowboys Challenge. The first hit out against Redlynch in torrential rain saw Smithfield winning convincingly 44-4, uncovering the ball playing talent of Shaq Snider and the brute force of McDonald Mura. The team went on to win the next couple of games against Cairns SHS and Peace Lutheran College before losing their way with training and forfeiting to Saint Augustines.

In term 2 the team entered the second round of the Challenge with Redlynch taking a backwards step and forfeiting the game to us, obviously anxious about playing the big forward pack that had hurt so many teams in the first round. Our dominant forward pack of Brayden Grogan, Tairan Hobbler, Shannon Cottet, Ben Pinches, Dillon Rogers and Todd Alderdice came together and set the benchmark of quality for all forwards in the schoolboy competition. With another close win against Cairns SHS, Smithfield played with confidence to roll Gordonvale 48-4, to finish at the top of their pool. The first semi-final was played on the hallowed turf of Smithfield State High School, with the boys rising to the challenge and beating the prestigious Saint Augustines 34-10. Saints have had the wood on Smithfield for many years so this win was as sweet as they come for the mighty light blue, dark blue.

The win against Saints put the team through to the final vs Trinity Bay High School. With Tairan Hobbler as the new Captain, the return of Shaq Snider and the game at Trinity Bay High School, the scene was set for a big game and a big game it was. The forwards set the platform dominating an aggressive T Bay side. The late inclusion of McKenzie Mura had a huge impact and the Murra brothers got a hat trick of tries between them. An injury to Morne Oosthuizen had the team struggling out wide, but Smithfield hung on to lead at half time. T bay applied a great deal of pressure with their kicks, combined with ball handling errors on our goal line led to some soft tries to T Bay. Smithfield fought a tough battle losing by ten points going down 34-24. The Smithfield players played tough and fair rugby league in spite of some dubious tactics from the opposition and were a pleasure to watch.

The players are to be commended by how they carried themselves throughout the Cowboys Challenge and they have set the benchmark for Smithfield rugby league teams in the future. Michael Starr Teacher

CCHAMPIONHAMPION LLAWNAWN BBOWLERSOWLERS Madi and Mitchell Styles have proved age is no barrier in the sport of lawn bowls. Both have won club championships and have represented their club at the highest level. The realization that many of the stereotype images portrayed about bowls are no longer applicable has resulted in many junior players taking up the sport and challenging the older players.

Mitch won the 2011 Men’s B Grade Championship at Marlin Coast Club and played in the Division 1 side in the District pennants.

Madi and Mitch took out the FNQ Open Pairs Championship in June and went on to win the All Schools Cup Challenge, representing Smithfield High. They now travel to Brisbane in September to compete in the State Final of the Cup Challenge where 20 districts will be competing.

Madi was selected in the State Under 18 squad and will be competing against NZ in Auckland in December.

Marlin Coast Bowls Club at Trinity Beach hosts a free coaching clinic on Mondays after school with all equipment provided and would welcome any students to come and give it a go!
