Words Matter Week: March 1–7 The first full week of March has received this designation from the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors (NAIWE), but you don’t have to be a professional to participate. Play word games with friends and family members, and find exercises to help strengthen your vocabulary and grammar. Words matter.

What’s Happening in our Neighborhood Commercial Real Estate is changing quickly all in positive directions. Recently all the remaining land by Tipsy’s Liquor was purchased by Furniture Row, plans for final development and layout has not yet been submitted to the county. 9083 W Peakview Dr is a shopping center that I like to frequent when I have a large comforter to wash at the laundromat. This center has been in need of love for a long time. The property finally sold last year for $1,430,000 and the new owner is working hard to lease spaces and make tenants happy. The former Pizza Hut build-ing at Kipling and Bowles is under contract with a diner. With the help of the county, this location will be open in May. If there is an area or building you are wondering about, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I can work on an answer for you for the next newsletter.

Growing Minds: The Color GreenMarch 17, 2020 Celebrate all that’s green from frogs to forests, and emeralds to alligators at the March Growing Minds program. Preschools will have a blast finding the “green sheep,” making “green eggs and ham” and searching for four-leaf clovers in the gardens! We will sing, dance and make nature-inspired art while enjoy-ing classics such as “Lizette’s Green Sock” and “Way Up High in a Green Tree”. Green, the color of life, renewal, and energy is the most common color in the natural world and March is the perfect time to get outdoors! This program is suitable for children 3-6 years old, accom-panied by a parent or guardian. Program will be held out-doors (weather permitting) or in the classroom at the Hudson Residence Business Office. Attendees are welcome to explore the gardens after the program. Walk-in registrations are welcome.

Career Advice That Can Work For You Success in your career isn’t just a matter of luck. The Entrepreneur magazine website offers these tips for starting and sustaining an outstanding career: • Work hard. Be willing to show that you’re not afraid

of long hours and strong effort. Adopt the mindset that you’ll do whatever’s necessary to stand above the rest of your peers.

• Set goals. Goals help you define what success means to you. Figure out where you want to go and how to get there. Set down specific concrete steps leading to your ultimate objective, and follow them meticulously.

• Find a mentor. You can’t do everything yourself, espe-cially when you’re starting out. Seek out people who can offer you advice and broaden your perspective.

• Join successful people. Hang out with people who’ve achieved the type of success you’re aiming for. You’ll get ideas from them, and, more important, their example will motivate you to reach the same peak of accomplish-ment.

• Manage your time. Set a routine that allows you to make the most of every minute, every day. Stick to it until it becomes a habit, and you’ll find yourself moving for-ward and upward consistently.

• Check in with yourself regularly. Once a year, or more frequently, sit down and review your goals. Determine how far along you are. Be willing to adjust your goals if circumstances or your desires have changed.

• Strive for constant improvement. No matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn. Keep expand-ing your knowledge and developing your skills so you’ll be ready for the next opportunity.

National Nutrition Month The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics wants you to “Eat Right. Bite by Bite” in 2020. It works throughout the year to provide tools and resources that will allow you to make better food choices and lead healthier lives, with the month dedi-cated to a larger effort of awareness and education. Let’s get healthy. Visit https://www.eatright.org/food/resources/national- nutrition-month for more info.

Obesity Affects Teen Brains Obesity is a problem at any age, but a new study suggests it has specific risks for teenagers. As the U.S. News & World Report website explains, advanced MRI techniques show that obese teens tend to have less integrity in the white matter of their brains (white matter contains fibers that con-nect different parts of the brain). The lower white matter integrity was observed in the region of the brain associated with emotional control and reward seeking. The study looked at 120 teenagers, and its findings are considered preliminary. Researchers speculate that excess body fat damages the brain through inflammation. The study found a correlation between higher levels of inflammatory substances in the blood and lower white matter integrity. Excess body fat can contribute to inflammation. The teens whose brains were affected tended to have higher levels of leptin, which is involved in appetite control, in their blood, as well as insulin, which regulates the body’s blood sugar. Doctors point out that obesity has many causes and shouldn’t be dismissed as a simple lack of will-power about eating. It’s unclear at this point whether obesity is responsible for the change in white matter integrity, or vice versa—or a combination of both.

Calm Your Fears About Airline Travel Flying may be the safest way to travel, but getting on an airplane still makes many people nervous. If you’re one of them, remember these basic tips for ensuring a calm, safe flight: • Fly nonstop when possible. Crashes and accidents are rare, but

they’re most likely to occur during takeoffs and landings. Look for nonstop flights (remember that direct flights aren’t necessarily nonstop, even though you may not change planes).

• Keep your seatbelt fastened. Yeah, you know this already, but it’s still important advice. Sudden turbulence can cause an injury, even when you’re sitting in your seat, if you’re not buckled in.

• Know your exits. If you have to evacuate quickly (and evacuations, along with the deployment of emergency oxygen, are the most common emergency situations you’re likely to encounter, although most of the time they’re preventative measures), you don’t want to waste time. Knowing the location of the nearest exit is an excellent precaution.

• Keep your children safe. When traveling with a baby or toddler, a child restraint system like a car seat is a must. Check the labels to make sure it’s certified for use on aircraft. Measure the width of your car seat before boarding: If it’s 16 inches or less, it should fit into any airline seat.

• Don’t obsess over finding the safest seat. Though you may want to be closest to the emergency exit, the fact is that no one seat is safer than any other on an airplane. For example, in some emergencies passengers are better off remaining in their seats— wherever they are—than trying to scramble off the plane.
