    Term 3 Week 9 27 September 2013

    Kia Ora Tatou

Market day was a monumental success and we appreciated your participation andattendance. What a fabulous way to engage students in some real life learning, designing and trialling products, refining products, testing the market, budgeting profitand loss and demonstrating innovation in the final products to be sold.

Congratulations to all staff and students.

An additional vote of thanks to the many parentsthat so generously assisted usin the making and baking, packaging and preparing. We could not have done itwithout you all.

This week the senior leadership team had the opportunity to work with WilsonMcCaskill. Wilson is the founder of the Play is the Way work that we use as our

schools moral framework around values and virtues. We have used this whole schoolapproach in greater detail this year to underpin our behaviour education system. Theposters are linked to the New Zealand Curriculum 5 key competencies and we usethem as a tool to help us embed these in learning activities.

The main message was that as a society we are increasingly becoming addicted topraise and reward systems. If you do this, I will give you this treat, sticker, or similarreward. This programme is designed to empower children to understand feedback versus correction, and to encouragethem to be in charge of their own thinking and feelings. This means they do the right thing because it is understood thisis the right thing to do and to be in charge of themselves.

If I have to reward you to make a strong choice then I am your master and you are in my control. This way the studentsare using their own thinking and feelings to develop their social and emotional learning and wellbeing. They are the

masters of themselves and not a victim of their emotions.Wilson stated that this is a forever programme. If you embedthis, it is a lifetime framework. Wilson is the author of the book

Children are not made of China. I have a copy availableto loan parents if you are interested.

They also sell resources from the website, including a miniversion of all of the posters we use. They are just the rightsize for your fridge at home! Parents that have read the bookand are using this have reported success. It is not a quick fix but it is powerful.

Congratulations to the House Captains for organizing thisfundraiser. The Salford Community raised $257.70, which will beforwarded through to Hearing House and will be used by the

Southern Cochlear Implant Trust to assist Deaf Children who

require a Cochlea Implant device to hear and enjoy the sounds of

life and learning that we all take for granted. Thank you.

Team New ZealandTHEY DID US PROUD.

We were kept on the edge of our seats for most of theseries and while we didnt win, we didnt stop tryingeither, so we should be mighty proud of the effort andresilience shown by this team and strive with ourlearning to follow suit.

This team of budding young chefs created 3 recipes andworked really well as a team. All of the students developedtheir cooking skills and enjoyed the creating, tasting and

doing dishes! We may not have won but we did have fun! Please encourage your children to learn to cook a familymeal. Sunday nights are a relaxed day to allow masterchef junior into the kitchen.

Congratulations: Madison Forbes, Emily Bray,Chris Hyde and Maraia McCormack.
