The Daily News of TV Sales Friday, October 11, 2019 COSTCO, KROGER ALSO AMONG TOP RETAILERS Publix Super Markets, Costco Wholesale, The Kroger Co., Wegmans Food Markets and H-E-B are the top five grocery retailers on Instacart, according to research by e-commerce intelligence firm Edison Trends reported by Supermarket News. In September, Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix accounted for a 37 percent estimated market share of Instacart orders, followed by Costco at 24 percent, Kroger at 16 percent, Wegmans at 12 percent and H-E-B at 11 percent. A year earlier, Whole Foods Market (20%) was second behind Publix (34%) and ahead of Costco (18%), H-E-B (15%) and Kroger (13%). San Jose, Calif.-based Edison noted that Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans has moved into the top five following Instacart’s wind-down of its service with Whole Foods Market stores earlier this year. In December 2018, Instacart founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta said the company was phasing out its partnership with Whole Foods, which under the ownership of e-tail giant Amazon has been ramping up online grocery delivery via the Prime Now service. From Aug. 1, 2017, to Sept. 30, 2019, the top five grocery retailers by Instacart orders were Publix, Whole Foods, Kroger, H-E-B and Costco, according to Edison’s analysis, which was based on more than 50,000 transactions. Data was scaled so that the highest monthly number of orders was set to 100. “Publix took the lead in May of 2018 and hasn’t looked back. This past September, they had 69 percent more Instacart orders than their next-closest competitor, Costco,” Edison said in its study. “Whole Foods, which had been the leader in early 2018, began tapering off its usage of Instacart in 2019 and since June 2019 has had no Instacart orders at all.” Year over year through the end of September, Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco saw the largest growth (+99%) in Instacart orders among the top five retailers. Next were Kroger (+86%), Publix (+64%) and H-E-B (+15%). Cincinnati-based Kroger’s growth was fueled by a major expansion of its Instacart service, which became available at hundreds more stores in fall 2018. “Looking at the top five [Instacart] grocers in September 2018 versus September 2019, the majority of grocers have seen their shares grow — perhaps due to the loss of Whole Foods,” Edison observed. “The only outlier is H-E-B, which has grown in terms of number of orders but has fallen in terms of market share.” Over (Continued on Page 3) STUDY: PUBLIX TOP INSTACART GROCERY RETAILER ADVERTISER NEWS Walmart is adding to its team of around 1,500 data scientists as it looks to implement artificial intelligence across more of its operations, Business Insider reports. “We’re involved in robotics, we’re involved in micro-personalization, we’re involved in probably the biggest supply chain in the world,” says Chief Data Officer Bill Groves... ANALYST: ROKU TO HAVE 72M USERS BY 2022 As Roku plots its international expansion plans, the company is being tagged by analysts for some impressive growth over the next few years, FierceVideo reports. That most recent total was up 39 percent from the 22 million active accounts Roku reported for the same quarter in 2018. Nollen said 72 million active accounts for Roku could drive the company’s platform revenue to $2.3 billion and overall revenue of $2.7 billion, nearly tripling from 2019 guidance. “The shift to connected television viewing that has been underway in the U.S. for the past few years will follow internationally in the coming years,” Nollen wrote in a research note. “Roku has built a leading position in the U.S., and its devices will find a ready market abroad.”

SPORTS FANTASY TV SPEND UP AS NFL RESUMES With a growing number of states legalizing sports gambling, sport-fantasy game marketers — which are now expanding into sports-gambling services — have increased their TV advertising spend during the first month of the NFL season. Television News Daily reports that two of the major sports-fantasy game companies — FanDuel and DraftKings — have placed more commercial airings with estimated higher national TV spend during the past month than over the first five weeks of NFL regular-season games. From Sept. 1 through Oct. 9, FanDuel placed 3,875 commercial airings from 19 different creatives, with an estimated $12.6 million in national TV spending (992.3 million impressions), iSpot.tv says. DraftKings is at 1,330 airings from 14 different commercials, with $3.6 million in TV spending (431.1 million impressions). A year ago over the same period, FanDuel placed 1,606 airings from seven different creative commercials — $10.8 million (683.8 million impressions). DraftKings placed 1,036 airings from 15 commercials — with a $2.7 million spend (382.4 million impressions). This was the result of a higher viewership period for NFL games this season. After five weeks, TV viewership across all national/regional TV games is up 4 percent to a Nielsen 16.2 million average.
