PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
THANK YOU so much to everyone who attended the “Backpack” luncheon last Sunday for homeless children who are served by the Los Angeles Mission! You were just amazing! I must thank all the wonderful people who helped that day cooking, setting up and serving food: first “Master Chef for Saint Sophia” Ourania Giatgzoglou, Katerina Crenshaw, Judie Christopoulos, Billie Ellis, Helen Ellis, Pauline Evangelatos, Katrina Beers, Anastasia Beers, Eleni Lianos, Olga Jordan, Jan Pastras, Jayne Poullos, Allison Stavaridis and Bella, Presv. Danita, Marianna Politis, Sophia Spirus and of course special thanks to John Kopatsis for organizing the work and the custodial crew for Saint Sophia, who did all the pre-planning and cleanup for the day! If I missed anyone, please forgive me. We will know how many backpacks and items we collected after the Mission has time to count it all out.
Our Philoptohos general assembly meetings will be starting again on September 21 after liturgy. Our speaker will be Dr. Eve Tibbs, speaking on “Beauty and Truth: How to Read Icons”. Please join us! We’ll have lunch and a report from the National Convention. If you have not been to a Philoptohos meeting we encourage you to come and meet us. We know not everyone has time to attend a meeting or work on a committee, but if you have a chance to come by we would love to meet you. EVERYONE is welcome to attend! Philoptohos always needs new members and people who are ready to join in the work. We have wonderful fellowship and friendships as we work together.
STUFFED ANIMAL COLLECTION: During the month of September, we will be accepting donations of NEW STUFFED ANIMALS or SOFT cuddly blankets that will be donated to children undergoing cancer treatments at California Hospital. This project started in memory of Ileana Shuman, who died of brain cancer at the age of 6. Ileana was the niece of our Board member Allison Stavaridis. You may bring your donation to the September Philoptohos meeting or drop your donation off in a bag at the Narthex of the church and mark it for ‘Philoptohos’. Thank you.

PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
HOLY CROSS SEMINARY: On Sunday, September 21, Philoptohos must pass a tray for our commitment to Holy Cross Seminary. All money collected is for the seminary, not for Philoptohos. If you wish to make a donation for the seminary please be sure to have it at church on that day or you can mail it to Philoptohos in care of the Cathedral.
FESTIVAL PASTRY BOOTH: Don’t forget to sign up and volunteer to work in the pastry booth at the festival! We can always use some ‘extra hands’ but please be sure you sign up ahead of time so we can place everyone in shifts. It is very difficult when people show up ‘unexpectedly’ and we don’t have any room in the booth. You may sign up after church on a Sunday at the volunteer table or contact [email protected] Thank you!
“For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me” John 12:8. With love in Christ’s service, Virginia Noyes and The Philoptohos Board of Directors

This is our community’s biggest and most important expression of cultural and spiritual identity, as well as a critical fundraiser for our operational costs. Our participation as volunteers is needed again. It is the act of coming together and working for a common goal that defines us as the Saint Sophia Cathedral Community.
Please join us at the coffee hour after the Liturgy and sign up. You can also contact our volunteer coordinator assistant, Jessica Benitez:
