THE FOURTH PILLAR OF THE CATECHISM OF THE

CATHOLIC CHURCH: PRAYER What is prayer? It is a great door that opens up to faith. When you pray, it is as if you come out of yourself to join a God with whom you can speak and who supports you beyond you own strength. What moves a person to pray? Knowing your limitations and the need for something that is beyond ourselves; we pray because we thirst for something infinite. As St. Augustine said, “our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” Sometimes we as distracted and get away from God; sometimes we put our trust into material things, which we convert into gods; but God seeks us repeatedly and calls us again and again. Prayer purifies us, make us capable of resisting temptations, strengthens us in our weakness, takes away the fears, and increases our energy. What role models of prayer do we find in the Old Testament? Abraham. He listened to God and was willing to obey and abandon his own comfort zones. Moses. Facing the burning bush, Moses entered into a conversation with God. He was the intercessor of his people, transmitting God’s will to them, and pleading to God for the people’s needs. Job. From his suffering and his anguish, he conversed with God at all times and strengthened his faith and devotion. The prophets. They heard God ’s call and entered into a dialogues with God in order to fulfill their difficult mission. The Psalms. 150 songs and prayers that are still used in the Liturgy of the Hours and in the Eucharistic celebration. How does Jesus teach us to pray? Jesus learned to pray with his family in the synagogue. But his prayer shows a union with his celestial Father that is only possible from his nature as the son of God. The entire life of Jesus was about prayer. In those decisive moments of his life (temptation, prayer in the Gethsemane, his death), his prayer was very intense. When he faced death, he felt the most profound fear a human being could feel, but he found strength in prayer. If we learn to pray like Jesus we enter into a trust without limits, joining in the prayer of Jesus and being guided by the Spirit of God. By Carmen F. Aguinaco Nuestra Parroquia

EL CUARTO PILAR DEL CATECISMO DE LA

IGLESIA CATÓLICA: LA ORACIÓN ¿Qué es la oración? Es una gran puerta que se abre a la fe. Cuando se ora es como si se saliera de uno mismo para unirse a un Dios con el que puede hablar y en quien se pude apoyar más allá de su propia fuerza. ¿Qué mueve a la persona a orar? El saberse limitado y necesitado de algo más allá de uno mismo. Se ora porque se tiene sed de algo infinito. Como dice san Agustín: “nuestros corazones están inquietos hasta que descansen en ti”. A veces nos distraemos y nos escapamos de Dios; a veces ponemos nuestras confianzas en cosas materiales, a las que convertimos en dioses. Pero Dios nos busca una y otra vez, una y otra vez nos llama. La oración nos purifica, nos hace capaces de resistir a la tentación, nos fortalece en nuestra debilidad, nos quita los miedos, nos aumenta la energía. ¿Qué modelos de oración encontramos en el Antiguo Testamento? Abraham. Escuchó a Dios y estuvo dispuesto a obedecer y a salir de sus propias áreas de comodidad. Moisés. Frente a la zarza ardiente, Moisés entró en conversación con Dios. Fue intercesor de su pueblo, transmitiendo al pueblo la voluntad de Dios, y pidiendo a Dios por las necesidades del pueblo. Job. Desde su sufrimiento y su angustia, conversó con Dios en todo momento y fortaleció su fe y su entrega. Los profetas. Escucharon la llamada de Dios y entraron en diálogo con Dios para poder cumplir su difícil misión. Los Salmos. 150 cantos y oraciones que todavía utilizamos en la Liturgia de las Horas y en la celebración eucarística. ¿Cómo nos enseña Jesús a orar? Jesús aprendió a orar con su familia en la sinagoga. Pero su oración demuestra una unión con su Padre celestial que es solo posible desde su naturaleza como Hijo de Dios. Toda la vida de Jesús fue oración. En los momentos decisivos de su vida (tentaciones, oración del Huerto, su muerte), su oración fue muy intensa. Cuando se enfrento a la muerte, experimento el miedo mas profundo que pueda sentir un ser humano. Pero encontró fuerza en la oración. Si aprendemos a orar como Jesús entraremos en una confianza sin limites, uniéndonos a la oración de Jesús y siendo guiados por el Espíritu de Dios. Por Carmen F. Aguinaco

2014 Annual Catholic Appeal Open Your Heart to Christ

During the weekend of March 29 & 30, our parish will participate in the 2014 diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal. This year’s theme, Open Your Heart to Christ. The theme brings to mind a quote attributed to Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, “Give me your heart…that I may receive Jesus as you did. And go in haste to give to others.” Funds generated through the Appeal support the work of the Church by responding to an abundance of human needs within our diocese. Participation in the Appeal helps to keep the spirit of Christ alive in the hearts that need Him most - the poor, the sick, the distressed, our children and our elderly. Please take a moment to consider the many blessings that God has bestowed upon you and prayerfully consider what you are able to share in support of our diocesan Church.
