2. SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH

A Message From Our Pastor Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week

WATCH - Apologetics - CATHOLIC ANSWERS Does the Bible Disprove the Assumption?

On Wednesday, we will celebrate the oldest feast of Our Lady—the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary. This is a truth that has been held in the hearts of the faithful from the early life of the Church, and upon which the church fathers preached. Pope Pius XII formally defined the Assumption as Church Dogma in his 1950 apos-tolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus. He wrote: “(The holy fathers and great doctors of the Church) brought out more clearly the fact that what is commemorated in this feast is not simply the total absence of corruption from the dead body of the Blessed Virgin Mary but also her triumph over death and her glorification in heaven, after the pattern set by her only Son, Jesus Christ. “Thus Saint John Damascene, preeminent as the great preacher of this truth of tradition, speaks with powerful elo-quence when he relates the bodily assumption of the loving Mother of God to her other gifts and privileges: ‘It was nec-essary that she who had preserved her virginity inviolate in childbirth should also have her body kept free from all cor-ruption after death. It was necessary that she who had car-ried the Creator as a child on her breast should dwell in the tabernacles of God. It was necessary that the bride espoused by the Father should make her home in the bridal chambers of heaven. […] It was necessary that the Mother of God should share the possessions of her Son, and be venerated by every creature as the Mother and handmaid of God.’ “Saint Germanus of Constantinople considered that it was in keeping not only with her divine motherhood but also with the unique sanctity of her virginal body that it was in-corrupt and carried up to heaven…” (¶ 20-22). We have Saints whose bodies or parts of their body were uncorrupt—they did not decay. This truth holds that Mary’s body did not see decay and also was taken fully into glory with God. In this, Mary becomes the first to receive the promise of the bodily resurrection, to which we all look forward.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS AUGUST 19, 2018 3.

FIRST READING - Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom has built her house, she has set up her seven columns; she has dressed her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has spread her table. She has sent out her maidens; she calls from the heights out over the city: "Let whoever is simple turn in here; To the one who lacks understanding, she says, Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed! Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding."

SECOND READING - Ephesians 5:15-20 Brothers and sisters: Watch carefully how you live, not as fool-ish persons but as wise, making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not continue in igno-rance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord

Jesus Christ to God the Father.

GOSPEL - John 6:51-58 Jesus said to the crowds: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

Key Scriptural Passage:

Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51)

Questions for Discussion: Adult: When has the bread of life given you the strength you needed to face a difficult situation in your life? Child: What will you ask Jesus to help you with when you receive Holy Communion this week?

and Amy Welborn. It will be held August 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio. Tickets are $65.00. For tickets, schedule, and special events see web-site: www.fullnessoftruth.org. For more information, there are brochures in the Sacred Heart Chapel.

Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary...

The Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is a dogma of the Catholic faith that Mary is the Immaculate Conception; that is, in preparation for the Incar-nation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity in her womb, she was conceived without the corruption of sin through the infinite merits of her Son, Jesus Christ. Over the centuries, as saints and theologians reflected on how Mary pondered and treasured the sacred events from the life of Christ in her holy heart, as attested in Scripture, her pure heart was recognized as something to be imitated. Devotion to Our Lady’s purity of heart began to flower, so much so that in the 17th century St. John Eudes promoted it alongside the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion rose to a new level after the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, when Mary revealed an image of her Immacu-late Heart to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco.

The phone service at the parish office will be switched on Monday, August 20. Therefore, we may or may not have phone service that day. If there is something urgent, please come by the parish office.
