From the Pastor’s Desk…
Today’s readings present the struggles and challenges that disciples of Jesus can expect in carrying out their
mission. The Lord, however, assures us of Divine Providence, for “he has rescued the life of the poor from the
power of the wicked” (Jer. 20:13) and that “everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge
before my heavenly Father.” (Mt. 10:32)
In the first reading, we see Jeremiah, a reluctant prophet who struggles with the mission of having to preach the
word of God to a rebellious people eager to trap him and take vengeance on him. His faith and trust in the Lord
enable him to answer the divine call. We, too, are called by God to be His prophets in this modern age. When
our Christian beliefs are labeled “old fashioned” and contradict modern day thinking, we have to stay strong in
our faith and speak out for God despite all kinds of opposition since “I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13)
In the Gospel, when Jesus sends out the Apostles to preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God, he fore-
warns them of the sufferings and persecutions they will encounter. At the same time, He instructs them to “…
not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy
both soul and body in Gehenna.” (Mt. 10:28) Jesus further comforts them in saying that the Father, who takes
care of even the sparrows, will definitely take care of them amidst all the trials they will encounter in testifying
for the Lord.
We, too, are called to be strong and faithful to the Lord at all times. By looking at Jesus, we see that the trials
and sufferings of this life, especially those that we face as we try to live out and share our faith with others, are
short-lived. We should therefore not give in to fear of contradiction, because in the end, truth will triumph over
untruth, justice over injustice, and eternal life over death, as we have seen in the life, death and resurrection of
our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Congratulations, SNT Class of 2020!
The virtual graduation ceremonies at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Catholic Academy took place at 5:00 PM on
June 12, 2020. Congratulations to the Graduates! May you look back to this momentous day with joy. Dear
Parents, thank you for your trust, sacrifices and encouragement. You have given your children a good start as
they grow into adulthood. And special thanks to Mr. Robert Lowenberg and all our teachers, catechists and
staff for sharing their gifts and talents. God bless you all, and may you have a peaceful and restful summer.
Thank you, Sr. Karen
We are deeply grateful to Sr. Karen Cavanagh, C.S.J., who will be leaving St. Nick’s at the end of the month.
She was the Family Minister here for more than seven years. Sr. Karen is a beautiful example of kindness, car-
ing and joy, traits which those who came to have their children baptized here surely found so endearing. I be-
lieve most of you have shared interesting conversations with Sr. Karen, especially after the daily morning Mass.
We, the parish staff, have had the happy experience of working and celebrating birthdays, feasts, etc. with her.
Take care always, dear Sister; we wish you all the best!
Happy Father’s Day
We want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, grandfathers and Godfathers in our parish family. May
God bless you always and may St. Joseph be your model of care, kindness and protective love!
God bless you,
Fr. John Francis

SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2020 GOSPEL MATHEW 10:26-33
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mathew
Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is
concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that
will not be known. What I say to you in the dark-
ness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered,
proclaim on the housetops.
And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but
cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who
can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not
one of them falls to the ground without your Fa-
ther’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head
are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth
more than many sparrows.
Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will
acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But who-
ever denies me before others, I will deny before my
heavenly Father.”

bién lo reconoceré ante mi Padre, que está en los cielos;
pero al que me niegue delante de los hombres, yo tam-
bién lo negaré ante mi Padre, que está en los cielos”.
