(One of the following forms of the penitential act is used:)

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. “May God have mercy on us, for-give us our sins and bring us to ev-erlasting life.” Amen.

“Have mercy on us, O Lord.” For we have sinned against you. Show us, O Lord, your mercy.” And grant us your salvation. “May God have mercy on us, for-give us our sins and bring us to ev-erlasting life.” Amen. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “Christ, have mercy,” Christ, have mercy. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy.

“Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “Christ, have mercy,” Christ, have mercy. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “May God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.” Amen.

Collect

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.

Gloria The Liturgy of the Word

Responsorial—Psalm 72

Music: Owen Alstott © 1977, 1990, OCP

O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king's son; He shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more. May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him. For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save.

“Let us pray.”

“O God, who on this day revealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the

guidance of a star, grant in your mercy that we, who know you already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of your sub-

lime glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for

ever and ever.” Amen.

1st Reading - Isaiah 60:1-6

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shin-ing radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.

Gospel - Matthew 2:1-12

The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

2nd Reading - Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians

Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (bow) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle, be our protection

against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him,

we humbly pray; and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly host,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl about the world seeking the

ruin of souls. Amen.

After everyone has received communion and after the

Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the Tabernacle, you may be seated or kneel for a time of quiet prayer.

January 5th—Epiphany

We have much to be thankful for in 2020. The wonderful outreach that our parishioners, PSR, SVDP, and school embodied was a witness to our call to Discipleship in serving God’s Kingdom. “We celebrate today our own entrance into the family of God, and the fulfillment of God’s plan that all nations be united with Israel as co-heirs to His Fatherly blessings, as Paul reveals in today’s Epistle. We too, must be guided by the root of David, the bright morning star (see Revelation 22:16), and the light of the world (see Isaiah 42:6; John 8:12). As the magi adored Him in Bethlehem, let us renew our vow to serve Him, placing our gifts – our intentions and talents – on the altar in this Eucharist. We must offer to Him our very lives in thanksgiving. No lesser gift will suffice for this newborn King” (Scott Hahn) Brothers in Christ offer this reflection on our journey: The beloved Christmas hymn “I Wonder as I Wander” can transport anyone meditating on it back to the caravan of wise men following the star in search of Jesus. The magi must have been wondering as they wandered too. Over the centuries since Christ’s birth, the readings used in this Sunday’s mass of the Epiphany have provided much additional fodder for a reader’s own wonder-filled journey. Sunday’s gospel reading (MT 2:1-12) recalls when Herod, fearing the birth of that King, instructs the magi searching for him to let him know when they find him “…that I too may go and do him homage.” Of course the magi do find Jesus, and, as Sunday’s reading states, having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way. As the gospels tell us, Jesus was repeatedly protected by divine dreamlike interventions, redirecting his Holy Family out of harm’s way, just as the magi were. So why couldn’t that same kind of dream state have overcome King Herod and converted him into the newborn King’s most ardent defender? After all, many years later Paul was converted to Christianity’s strongest voice once the already-risen Jesus changed Paul’s heart on the Road to Damascus. With God, all things are possible. Jesus knocked down all other barriers to his Kingdom BUT sin—leaving its ultimate defeat up to anyone asking for the wisdom to wonder and wander toward their own epiphany. Visit https://volunteersignup.org/HWRFP to reserve time for further meditation before the Blessed Sac-rament in our chapel of love.

CHILD AND FAMILY ADVOCATES OF CUYAHOGA COUNTY

Child and Family Advocates of Cuyahoga County (CFACC)

improves the lives of children and families involved in the juvenile justice, child welfare, and family law systems through service as attorney Guardians Ad Litem

and volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates; education and training, advocacy, practice, and policy development; and collaborative alliances with related

organizations.

CFACC approaches child advocacy in a unique way. GALs and CASAs are assigned as partners to advocate for the

best interests of the children in a family, whether one child or a sibling group. This dual representation enhances the quality of advocacy provided for children in the Juvenile Court. Both the CASA and GAL bring different skills and different perspectives; however, each has one common

goal – providing the highest quality advocacy for the best interests of each child.

CASA of Cuyahoga County, a program of CFACC, is

searching for volunteers to advocate for kids who have been neglected and abused. CASAs are everyday

citizens who are trained and appointed by the court to advocate for the safety and well-being of

children. CASAs collect information that helps the Court make the best decision for a safe, caring, and

permanent home for children involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. The CASA is

responsible for investigation, facilitation, advocacy, and monitoring of the assigned child’s case and to represent

the child’s best interests.
