The Sacrament of Marriage is celebrated after a period of preparation of no less than six months. Those who wish to marry at St. Joseph’s are invited to contact one of the priests during regular weekday office hours before making any other arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated, on the first and third Sundays of the month at 1:30pm. Please call the Parish Office to schedule an appointment with one of the priests. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is available at any time to any Catholic over the age of reason who is seriously ill, preparing for surgery or suffering the effects of age. The priests of the parish regularly celebrate the Eucharist and administer the sacrament of the sick at the area nursing homes; lay ministers lead services and bring communion to the residents every Sunday.

From the Desk of Fr. Lagiovane
This upcoming week we remember the Supreme Court Decision Roe Vs Wade which legalized abor-tion in the United States. Our unborn brothers and sisters are in need our prayers. They have no voice and we as a people of faith must be the voice of the unborn. We pray in a very special way for a greater respect for all human life- from conception through natu-ral death. Our Catholic faith has consistently proclaimed the Gospel of Life! We are all called to do our part to build up a culture of life in our society. May Mary the Mother of all Life guide our Pro- Life efforts! “That is the dignity of America, the reason she exists, the condition of her survival, yes, the ultimate test of her greatness: to respect every human person, especially the weak and most defenseless ones, those as yet unborn.” St. John Paul II “ All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” Pope Francis “ `Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, , and then just after birth, expe-rienced the world’s rejection. And every elderly person… even if he is ill or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the culture of waste suggests!” Pope Francis

The Bishops of the United States requested and received permission for the reception of Holy Commun-ion under both forms on Sundays in 1985. This permission was granted, but it was up to the local parish to provide the teaching and to implement this practice if they choose. The U.S. Bishops state that the customary manner of receiving the Precious Blood is from the chalice. The communicant must never dip the host into the chalice. If we choose to receive the Precious Blood we must receive it from the Priest, Deacon or Extraordinary Minister from the Chalice. We must be given the Chalice and then drink. Historically, Communion under both forms was practiced in the early church. Fear of spilling the Pre-cious Blood, the logistics of distribution and concerns about disease began to limit the practice. The Church continues to teach us that Christ is present in both of the elements of the bread and wine that become the Body and Blood of Christ. Thus receiving Holy Communion under one or both forms does complete our participation in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Therefore, when we receive the Sacred Host we are receiving the Full- Body- Blood- Soul and Divinity of Christ. When we come up to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion we should not be eating or gum chewing during Mass, even when we are not receiving Holy Communion. When you approach Holy Communion and the person in front of you is receiving you should then bow before approaching to receive. One can choose to receive on the tongue or in the hand. When we choose to receive communion in the hand, we make a throne with our hands by putting one hand over the other and the palm of your hand flat, to receive Our Lord. DO NOT GRAB OR TAKE THE HOST WITH YOUR FINGERS. When the Priest, Deacon or Extraordinary Minister says “the body of Christ” the communicant is to respond “AMEN”. No other response is appropriate. AMEN, which means, I believe. It is a statement of our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. When we return to our seats we should pray and make an act of thanksgiving to the Lord. If a Com-munion Hymn is sung we should join in the singing.
