Dear Saint Joseph Parishioners: Why do we veil things? Many have noticed that we’ve begun veiling the chalice for Mass and that our tabernacle is also veiled at various times throughout the year, but have you ever wondered why? It is an ancient Jewish custom to veil things that are considered holy. In the Old Testament, we read that a portion of the interior of the temple where the Ark of the Cove-nant was located—the abiding presence of God—was veiled, for example. During Jesus’ lifetime, this veil was “torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:51). Although the practice of women veiling their heads with a mantilla when they enter a church is becoming popular once again today, you might re-member that before the Second Vatican Council, women were required to cover their heads in church. This was the case be-cause women bear new life in their womb, children made in God’s image and likeness, and so because she was considered holy, her head was veiled when she was at Mass. In the same way, the tabernacle which holds the reserved Body and Blood of Christ is the dwelling place of God in our church and is con-sidered holy. Likewise, the chalice and paten which hold the Body and Blood of Christ consecrated at Mass is considered holy. It makes sense, then, to veil them according to this an-cient Jewish custom. Town Hall Meeting As Father Ryan announced at all of the Masses on his first week-end in our parish, he will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Sun-day August 25th at 4PM in Father Blain Hall to hear from pa-rishioners about how they would like to see our parish grow and become more vibrant. Also at the meeting, he will lay out his vi-sion and plan for our parish as we move into the new school year. Please make every effort to attend as all parishioners’ input is im-portant and we look forward to seeing you on August 25th!
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to Nursing Homes We are in need of current Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to also assist periodically bringing Holy Com-munion to our parishioners in local nursing homes. If you are able to volunteer for this, please contact Father Ryan at the rec-tory or by email at [email protected].
Eucharistic Adoration The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life.” (CCC 1324) It is from Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist, that our faith flows and our worship, in turn, is directed. We will begin holding weekly Eucharistic Adoration this September and Father Ryan is looking for a few volunteers to help coordinate the schedule of adorers. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION UPDATE
Month Eight– Developing Baby Now your spiritually adopted baby is finished developing and is concentrating on gaining weight; he/she might be making her mother uncomfortable with his/her size. He/She will need a layer of fat to help him/her stay warm after he/she leaves the perfect temperature inside his/her mother’s womb. In a short time, her baby will be born. Your baby’s mother appreciated the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby to term.

Do It For the Kids? This Fall we will be moving our Confirmation classes to the former CYO Room in the basement of our church. Before that happens, however, the room is in desperate need of some TLC—cleaning, painting, and organization. Father Ryan is looking for some volunteers who can help with that work on Saturday August 17th beginning at 9AM. Supplies and lunch will be provided. The Diocese of Providence is sponsoring a Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration for the year 2019 on Sunday, September
15th at 1pm at the Cathedral of Ss Peter & Paul in Providence. Married couples celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th and over anniversaries in 2019 will be honored. Couples are encouraged to register for this event by obtaining and completing a registration form from St. Joseph’s Rectory Office before August 16th.
