However, the most common way people become Catholic is sll by bapsm as infants. For children over the age of 7, the iniaon rites for adults are adapted and the children go through a formaon process of the catechumenate. For infants and children under age 7, the Church has a special Rite of Bapsm which sll retains some of the liturgical rites for adults, but very much abbreviated to a single liturgical ceremony. Today, there is confusion among some Catholics concerning the appropriate me to bapze. The answer is simple – As soon as possible! Bapsm should not be delayed. In the past, infants were bapzed within days of birth due to fear of infant mortality. Today, thankfully, we have less to fear in that regard, but bapsm should sll be given as soon as possible and not needlessly delayed. I become frustrated when I hear of families delaying the bapsm of their child unl it is convenient for the party! Ugh! Forget the party – get the baby bapzed! Have the party whenever you like, but let the baby have the grace of the sacrament without delay. Bapsm should be done in the first weeks or months aſter birth. As praccal maer, I would suggest not longer than three months aſter birth. In the case of an emergency or danger of death bapsm should always take place immediately! Another common concern that arises with bapsm are the godparents. Godparents are important, but not the most important part of bapsm. The role of a godparent is to assist the parents in raising the child in the Catholic Faith and to be a model of living the Catholic Faith. The qualificaons for godparents are quite simple. Godparents must be 1) bapzed, 2) confirmed, 3) praccing Catholics and 4) if married, married in the Catholic Church. “Praccing” means that they really live the Catholic faith. This does not mean “Christmas and Easter” Catholics. Being asked to be a godparent is an honor, but it is not merely “honorary”. It is a solemn promise before God to assist in raising the child in the Catholic Faith. To fulfill this promise, godparents must be praccing and living their Catholic faith. Godparents must be male and female (no same sex godparents). While both godparents should be praccing Catholics, a non-Catholic Chrisan may serve as a “Chrisan witness” along with a fully iniated and praccing Catholic. Godparents do not have to be married to each other, nor do they have to be relaves. Parents, on the other hand, only have to promise that they will raise their children Catholic. They should truly strive to be good and praccing Catholics and be married in the Church. For children whose parents are not married or fully living a Catholic life, the Church does not want children to be denied the grace of bapsm. Ideally and hopefully, the birth of a child will help bring the parents closer to God and the Church so that they too can have the graces that God wishes to bless them with. At bapsm, children should be given a bapsmal name. They should have a patron saint’s name or a name denong their new life in Christ. It is a most laudable pracce to name girls in honor of our Blessed Mother (Mary, Marie, Maria, Miriam, Lourdes, Guadalupe, Carmen). Boys too can be honored with the Blessed Mother’s name as is our patron Jean-Marie Vianney and our current pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio. A bapsmal name connects the newly bapzed to the patron saint in a wonderful way throughout his/her life. It is important to have a bapsmal name especially if the given name is of pagan origin or meaning. In some families, devoons to the saints are carried from one generaon of family to the next in the bapsmal names (Joseph, Anthony, Francis, Patrick, Anne, Theresa, Clare, Elizabeth). Bapsm is the beginning of our journey with Jesus. When we are bapzed, we receive an ‘indelible mark’ on our soul and are configured to Christ. But the giſt of bapsm does not give us the giſt of infused, perfect or complete knowledge. We sll have to learn and be formed in the faith. That means children are to be brought by their parents to Mass every week. They should be taught the faith at home as well as at church. The giſt of faith is best when it is lived enthusiascally in the home and family. When lived, the Catholic Faith becomes appreciated as that pearl of great price which shapes our lives and gives our whole lives meaning, identy and direcon. Jesus says “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born from above.” (Jn 3.3) and “Go therefore and make disciples of all naons and bapze them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (Mt 28.19)

In Pace Christi,

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last week, I wrote concerning the baptism and reception into the Church by adults. However, the most common way people become Catholic is still by baptism as infants. For children over the age of 7, the initiation rites for adults are adapted and the children go through a formation process of the catechumenate. For infants and children under age 7, the Church has a special Rite of Baptism which still retains some of the liturgical rites for adults, but very much abbreviated to a single liturgical ceremony. Today, there is confusion among some Catholics concerning the appropriate time to baptize. The answer is simple – As soon as possible! Baptism should not be delayed. In the past, infants were baptized within days of birth due to fear of infant mortality. Today, thankfully, we have less to fear in that regard, but baptism should still be given as soon as possible and not needlessly delayed. I become frustrated when I hear of families delaying the baptism of their child until it is convenient for the party! Ugh! Forget the party – get the baby baptized! Have the party whenever you like, but let the baby have the grace of the sacrament without delay. Baptism should be done in the first weeks or months after birth. As practical matter, I would suggest not longer than three months after birth. In the case of an emergency or danger of death baptism should always take place immediately!

Another common concern that arises with baptism are the godparents. Godparents are important, but not the most important part of baptism. The role of a godparent is to assist the parents in raising the child in the Catholic Faith and to be a model of living the Catholic Faith. The qualifications for godparents are quite simple. Godparents must be 1) baptized, 2) confirmed, 3) practicing Catholics and 4) if married, married in the Catholic Church. “Practicing” means that they really live the Catholic faith. This does not mean “Christmas and Easter” Catholics. Being asked to be a godparent is an honor, but it is not merely “honorary”. It is a solemn promise before God to assist in raising the child in the Catholic Faith. To fulfill this promise, godparents must be practicing and living their Catholic faith. Godparents must be male and female (no same sex godparents). While both godparents should be practicing Catholics, a non-Catholic Christian may serve as a “Christian witness” along with a fully initiated and practicing Catholic. Godparents do not have to be married to each other, nor do they have to be relatives. Parents, on the other hand, only have to promise that they will raise their children Catholic. They should truly strive to be good and practicing Catholics and be married in the Church. For children whose parents are not married or fully living a Catholic life, the Church does not want children to be denied the grace of baptism. Ideally and hopefully, the birth of a child will help bring the parents closer to God and the Church so that they too can have the graces that God wishes to bless them with.

At baptism, children should be given a baptismal name. They should have a patron saint’s name or a name denoting their new life in Christ. It is a most laudable practice to name girls in honor of our Blessed Mother (Mary, Marie, Maria, Miriam, Lourdes, Guadalupe, Carmen). Boys too can be honored with the Blessed Mother’s name as is our patron Jean-Marie Vianney and our current pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio. A baptismal name connects the newly baptized to the patron saint in a wonderful way throughout his/her life. It is important to have a baptismal name especially if the given name is of pagan origin or meaning. In some families, devotions to the saints are carried from one generation of family to the next in the baptismal names (Joseph, Anthony, Francis, Patrick, Anne, Theresa, Clare, Elizabeth).

Baptism is the beginning of our journey with Jesus. When we are baptized, we receive an ‘indelible mark’ on our soul and are configured to Christ. But the gift of baptism does not give us the gift of infused, perfect or complete knowledge. We still have to learn and be formed in the faith. Jesus says “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born from above.” (Jn 3.3) and “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (Mt 28.19)

New Playground Update

The parish playground for children is nearing completion. The playground was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey and had to be replaced. The replacement costs was $120,000. Thanks to our generous parishioners we have raised nearly $50,000. Can you help? Donations of any

amount are appreciated and needed.

For donation and information, please contact the Parish Office at 281-497-1500

Prudence, Safety and Security From time to time there will be individuals who attempt to panhandle on our campus. We have an excellent Social Services Ministry and our parish helps thousands of people in need. Panhandling is not allowed on campus. We ask that you never give to these individuals on campus. Instead please direct them to our Social Services. If you notice someone panhandling please inform a staff member or security. We want to help, but in the proper way. As the saying goes, Give real change not spare change!

This is one of the times of year that safety and security become issues. In church and at all times, please be prudent. Sometimes people see others at church as “easy marks”. Do not leave purses, phones wallets or other valuables unattended – even at mass. While we are sinners and in need of God’s mercy, we don’t want to tempt others who may have not yet gotten to the repentance and conversion part!

Part of living our faith is charity. We must all remember to practice charity at all times, this includes when we are in our cars. When driving in the parking lot and when driving through the neighborhood especially after mass, please drive with caution, courtesy and charity. Kids are out of school, so please exercise special attention when driving. Pay attention to the road, no texting while driving, don’t be distracted on the phone, slowdown in the neighborhood and remember to say a prayer to ask for God’s protection.

God Himself showed us the importance of taking a break from work when he created the heavens and the earth and rested on the seventh day. If you are lucky enough to be able to get away to take a vacation, please enjoy yourselves and have a great time. As a friendly reminder, there is no vacation from attendance at Mass. God never ceases to provide for us and we can never cease praising Him for His goodness to us. If you are traveling this summer, plan ahead. Remember to keep the Lord’s Day holy by attending Mass every Sunday. In fact, attending a weekday Mass during your vacation is a wonderful way to renew and refresh tired minds and bodies.

When you are traveling for pleasure or business, remember to check out www.masstimes.org for the name, location and Mass times of churches

around the country and even overseas.

among private schools in the Houston area. In two years, the new program has grown from three to nineteen students. Currently, students hail from five countries: China, Vietnam, S. Korea, Nigeria, and Venezuela. We provide a class to help international students acclimate to American culture AND a special theology curriculum to help students learn the basics of the Catholic faith. Do you have a friend or relative in another country who would like

to have the American high school experience? Please contact

Susie Kramer, Director of the International Student Program at St.

John XXIII at [email protected] or 281-396-8070 to apply for

this unique program.
