After John had been arrested, Jesus
came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel
of God: “This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
- Mk 1:14-15
Dear Parishioners,
Two events took place this past week which give us an insight into our culture.
The movie, “Fifty Shades of Grey” opened in theatres and the last episode of “Two
and a Half Men” aired. I did not read the book or see the movie but I have heard
that it tends to glorify sado-masochism and abuse. I have seen the long running
sitcom which had over the course of the years a great cast ensemble and writers but
it certainly glorified casual and commitment-less intimacy and put the “s” in self-
absorption. Some will say, “So what, it doesn’t have any effect on society”. If
video doesn’t have an effect on peoples’ attitudes then why does the advertising
industry spend, by one account, 66 billion dollars a year on TV commercials? We
ought to be concerned about how movies and TV have an impact on our attitudes,
especially those of our young people. We ought to be concerned about reinforcing
the attitudes of Jesus and our faith.

RICE BOWLS are available at the entrances to the church. Please take one. Pope Francis states, “Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty.”
