IETEETH SUDAY I ORDIARY TIME AUGUST 10, 2014
Dear Parishioners,
This coming Friday we will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. It is, of course, a Holy Day of Obligation. This begs a
question. Why does the Church have Holy Days of Obligation? In our busy,
modern lives we try to fit so many things into our daily schedules. It was no
different for earlier generations who worked in the fields or at hard manual labor
without a lot of modern conveniences. It was and still is so easy to fall into almost
robotic patterns of going from one task to another and to forget other things
including matters of faith. The Church has long tried to break us from these
patterns by celebrating certain feasts and marking those feasts with attendance at
Mass to help us to raise ourselves from the purely mundane and earthly concerns
and to give some thought to spiritual realities. It’s not easy to break our normal
pattern of life or schedule. Sometimes it’s the difficult things that cause us to think
and see something we hadn’t noticed. As difficult as observing a Day of Obligation
is, I urge you to do your best to attend Mass on that day or the vigil.

But when he saw how strong the wind was
he became frightened; and, beginning to

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand
and caught Peter, and said to him, "O you
of little faith, why did you doubt?"
