THE MYSTERY OF THE FOLDED NAPKIN AT THE TOMB OF JESUS

Sometime ago on different occasions during Lent and Easter seasons, I wrote about some mysterious things and events we read in the Bible: (1) the meaning of 153 fishes that Pe-ter and companions caught at the appearance of the risen Lord (John); (2) the thirty pieces of silver which Judas got for betraying his master; (3) the Temple veil that was rent in two at the moment of Jesus' death on the cross (Matthew 27). There is one more seemingly small detail at the resurrection story of Jesus that we can easily miss but whose meaning is quite significant. Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? "The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed sepa-rate from the grave clothes. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magda-lene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!' Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see.. The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Je-sus' head was folded up and lying to the side. Was that im-portant? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes! In order to understand the sig-nificance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded nap-kin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it. The table was furnished perfect-ly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished. Now, if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table. The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done.' But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, be-cause......The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!' St. Athanasius Church Vacation Bible School

is open for registration now.

It will be held from Monday through Fri-day August 5 - 9, 2019. The VBS theme this year is "Roar”. Children will explore God’s goodness and celebrate a ferocious faith that

powers them through this wild life. This summer program is open to all children entering 1 st grade up to 6th grade this Fall as campers. Entering 7th graders through high school seniors are invited to apply as teen counselors.

VBS half-day camp begins at 9 am with daily morning mass and ends at 12 noon. We offer an optional afternoon coding camp from 12:00 - 4:00 pm for the first 15 students who regis-ter. The coding camp is taught by Los Altos High School stu-dents. As the number of students attending VBS is growing every year, we need lots of parents help. One of our urgent need is to help supervise the kids. Please sign up for one or two shifts of 4 hours so you can experience VBS with your child. If you can help in other areas, please email me.

Register your child now or help us sponsor a camper if you can. Paper forms are available at the back of the church. Please fill out the form, attach the check and drop it in the collection basket or in the rectory. Last but not least, please keep our VBS families in your prayers. Say a Hail Mary or offer a decade of Rosary for us.

Clergy Study Week—May 13-17, 2019 NO Daily Masses

Beginning Monday, May 13 and con nuing through Friday, May 17, many of the priests of the Diocese of San Jose, in-cluding Fr. Oscar Tabujara and Fr. Paul-Cuong Phan will spend some me out of their Parishes for an annual week of study, prayer, and reflec on. Please keep Father Tabujara, Fr. Paul and all the par cipa ng priests in your prayers. As a result we will ONLY have Communion Services from Monday 5/13 — Friday 5/17, at 6:45 AM and 9 AM (There will be No Masses)

EL MISTERIO DE LA SERVILLETA DOBLADA EN LA TUMBA DE JESUS

Hace un tiempo en una ocasión diferente durante la Cuares-ma y la Pascua, escribí acerca de algunas cosas y eventos misteriosos que hemos leído en la Biblia: (1) el significado de los 153 peces que Pedro y sus acompañantes pescaron cuando nuestro Señor resucitado se les apareció (Juan); (2) las 30 monedas de plata que Judas recibió por traicionar a su Maestro; (3) el velo del Templo que se partió en dos en el mo-mento de la muerte de Jesús en la cruz (Mateo 27). Hay un detalle aparentemente más pequeño en la historia de la resurrección de Jesús que podemos perder fácilmente, pero cuyo significado es bastante significativo. ¿Por qué Jesús do-bló la tela de lino con la que envolvieron su cuerpo al ente-rrarlo después de su resurrección? "El Evangelio según San Juan (20: 7) nos dice que la servilleta, que se colocó sobre el rostro de Jesús, no fue tirada a un lado con el resto de las telas en la tumba. La Biblia toma un versícu-lo entero para decirnos que la servilleta estaba doblada cuidado-samente, y se colocó separada de las telas en la tumba. Temprano en la mañana del domingo, cuando todavía estaba oscuro, María Magdalena llegó a la tumba y descubrió que la piedra había sido removida de la entrada. Ella corrió y encontró a Simón Pedro y al otro discípulo, a quien Jesús amaba. Ella dijo: '¡Han sacado el cuerpo del Señor de la tumba, y no sé dónde lo han puesto!' Pedro y el otro discípulo corrieron a la tumba para ver ... El otro discípulo corrió mas rápido que Pedro y llegó primero. Se agachó, miró dentro y vio el lienzo tendido allí, pero no entró. Luego, Simón Pedro llegó y entró. También notó las envolturas de lino que había allí, mientras que la tela que había cubierto la cabeza de Jesús estaba doblada a un lado. ¿Fue eso importante? ¡Absolutamente! ¿Es realmente significativo? ¡Sí! Para comprender el significado de la servilleta doblada, debes entender un poco sobre la tradición hebrea de ese día. La servilleta doblada tenía que ver con el maestro y el sirviente, y cada niño judío conocía esta tradición. Cuando el sirviente preparaba la mesa para el maestro, se aseguraba de que fuera exactamente en la forma en que el maestro la quería. La mesa estaba puesta a la perfección, y luego el sirviente esperaría, fuera de vista, hasta que el maestro terminara de comer, y el sirviente no se atrevería a tocar esa mesa, hasta que el maestro terminara. Ahora, si el maestro había terminado de comer, se levantaría de la mesa, se limpiaría los dedos, la boca y limpiaría la barba, y empaparía la servilleta y la arrojaría sobre la mesa. El criado entonces podia despejar la mesa. Porque en aquellos días, la servilleta arrugada significaba: 'Ya he terminado'. Pero si el maestro se levantaba de la mesa, doblaba su servilleta y la colocaba junto a su plato, el sirviente no se atrevería a tocar la mesa, porque ... Campamento de Biblia de Verano de la Iglesia de San Atanasio

¡Registraciones Abiertas!

Se llevará a cabo de lunes a viernes, del 5 al 9 de agosto del 2019. El tema de VBS este año es "Roar". Los niños ex-plorarán la bondad de Dios y celebrarán su Fe feroz, lo cual les dará el poder necesario para vivir en esta vida . Los

estudiantes entrantes de primero a sexto grado serán nuestros campistas, mientras que los estudiantes de séptimo grado hasta preparatoria se postularán para ser consejeros de campamento. El campamento de medio día de VBS comienza a las 9 a.m. con Misa diaria y termina a las 12 del mediodía. Ofrecemos un campamento de codificación opcional por la tarde de 12:00 a 4:00 p.m. para los primeros 15 estudiantes que se registren. El campamento de codificación es impartido por los estudiantes de la preparatoria Los Altos. Como el número de estudiantes que asisten a VBS crece cada año, necesitamos mucha ayuda por parte de los padres. Una de nuestras necesidades urgentes es ayudar a supervisar a los niños. Por favor regístrese para uno o dos turnos de 4 horas para que pueda experimentar VBS con su hijo. Si puede ayudar en otras áreas, favor de enviarme un correo electrónico. Registre a su hijo ahora o ayúdenos a patrocinar a otros cam-pistas si puede. Los formularios en papel están disponibles en la parte posterior de la iglesia. Faith Formation for Children, Teens and Adults Our Faith Formation program seeks to empower our most important Catechists—our parents—to guide the faith for-mation of their children. Formation sessions will be provided to the parents and students in Grades 1-5 on Sunday mornings during the school year. Baptism of Children Parents are invited to contact our parish Secretary to set up an appointment for an initial interview with one of our priests. Parents and Godparents are required to attend a Baptismal preparation session prior to the Baptism. No Baptism date can be set until the interview with the priest. Children age 7 or above are required to participate in our Children’s Faith Formation program to prepare for this sacrament.
