Grad Night looks to be bigger and bet-ter than ever this year as organizers rally to make it a reality after the popular high school tradition nearly folded earlier this spring.
The Sahuarita Unified School District Educational Enrichment Foundation saved the day by backing the Grad Night Committee and taking sponsorship of the popular event.
Grad Night begins immediately follow-ing graduation on May 24. The all-night party was started more than 20 years ago to keep kids safe after commencement. The only requirement for entry is the kids have to stay all night. If they leave, a parent or guardian is contacted.
Activities planned for Grad Night include a photo booth, a caricature artist, a giant hamster ball, Laser Tag, board games, boxer bingo, giant Twister, three-on-three basket-ball, volleyball, dodge ball and more.
There will be no shortage of food either. The Optimists Club will be serving up their famous sausages, plus hotdogs and brats. There will be pizza and ice cream as well as soft drinks, chips and other snacks.
And it’s free to graduating seniors. Juniors will be charged a $5 entrance fee, but the mon-ey is collected and will be used to help pay for their Grad Night party the following year.
Several hundred graduates partied until dawn at last year’s grad night, and those who stayed on till morning had their names entered in a drawing for a car donated by the Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts. This year’s prize is a 1997 Chrysler Concord.

schools for the year. Most kids would not change schools and leave all their friends behind for their senior year, but for me it was a new adventure and a learning process. I’ve grown so much and made so many new friends because of the deci-sion of spending my senior year at Sahuarita High School.
My plans after high school are to attend Pima West to be-come an interpreter, and then after that I want to transfer to the UofA to become a drama teacher.
In five years I’d like to see myself being an interpreter and hopefully I’ll be done with school so that I can teach high school students ASL and drama.
