have faith and lots of love for you and we know that you will succeed in anything you set your mind to. May God bless you and keep you safe always. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Love you very much -Mom, Dad and your sis Elyssa (who will miss you very much when you’re gone)

Girls r like apples on trees. The best one like Andrew are at the top of the tree. The boys don’t want to reach for the good ones bcuz they’re afraid of getting hurt. Instead they get the rotten apples from the ground that aren’t as good but easy. So the apples up top think something is wrong with them, when in reality they are amazing. They just have to wait for the right boy to come along. The one who is brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree! Andrew…u want a guy that wants u for who u r. Please don’t let their looks or the way they fl irt get to u. You don’t want that to be a mistake that u want to learn from if u know in the end it will never work out. There’s no point if u already know the answer to it is a waste of time. There are many other guys that I’m sure u would think r hotter n actually have wat u r lookin for! Trust me Andrew.! Ik wat guys think n wat they’re looking for so I’m asking u to remain that 1 apple every 1 wants! :]

This year at SHS...• Sahuarita High welcomed a new principal to its halls this year. Kent Thompson took over

as SHS principal on Feb. 28. Thompson, 32, has been a teacher and administrator in the Sahuarita district since 2005.

• The high school put the finishing touches on its state-of-the-art football and track surface. The field turf was a dramatic upgrade from the previous dirt-and-grass surface, and the track allowed for much better training conditions for the school’s young athletes. The foot-ball team held its first home game on the new turn on Sept. 10, and the track team hosted its first meet in five years on March 2.

• The $6.5 million Sahuarita Road widening featured six colorful murals by Sahuarita High School students. The murals are on posts alongside the pedestrian approaches to the tunnel, which opened on Jan. 19.

• Sahuarita High School homecoming royalty Alan Ferlan and Cailee Hamm took center stage at the homecoming celebration last October, held at Earl J. Kelly Stadium in Sahuarita.

• The girls’ 4-by-800-meter relay team of Adriana Woletz, Sidney Giddings, Lauren Rayner and Melissa Williams broke the school record in this event at three different meets and snagged a fourth-place finish at the prestigious Chandler Rotary Invitational.

• The baseball team hosted - and won - the final edition of the Sahuarita Invitational in December.• New coaches this year included Chris Fee (football), KC Jones (boys basketball), Samantha

Silverman (boys soccer), and Scott Boyter (switching from boys basketball to boys tennis).• Nine Sahuarita High School music students - Dylan Carpenter, Molly Chaput, Damion Clay,

Juan Dominguez, Levi El Fattal, Colton Kreuzer, Justin Lanaman, Erica Schwarz and Mer-rilee Steely - performed at the South Central Region Music Festival on Feb. 12.

Aolani MolinaSenior year highlight: I walked into senior year with many expectations and knowing there was opportunity for lots to happen. I don’t believe there is one highlight, instead many. Memories that I will cherish for years to come, and one day pass down. I have learned so much these past four years and I wouldn’t change any-

thing, but know I’m ready for the next chapter of my life.College plans: Attending the University of New Mexico, where I will

major in psychology. I will be doing my core classes at Pima.Five-year outlook: In five years I see myself still attending some

type of schooling, my field takes a lot of work. Most likely living on my own with at least a part time job. Figuring out what life is all about and finding myself. Hopefully happy and accomplishing my dreams and striving to be the best I can be.

Bryn BoothSenior year highlight: A combination of many things. I played Cosette in CYT’s Les Miserables, I got ac-cepted into the Honors College at U of A, and I was salutatorian of my high school.College plans: To attend the University of Arizona Hon-ors College as a Musical Theatre major with a minor in

dance or physical fitness.Five-year outlook: Graduating from the U of A and then moving to

New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy for a two year conservatory program in musical theatre, and then start a career on Broadway.

Mariah CorbitSenior year highlight: Taking on a heavy work load so I feel pretty ready for college and the future without taking the easy way out with a bunch of electives. Also getting to enjoy the experience with everyone I’ll miss so much.College plans: U of AFive-year outlook: I hope to be well on my way to com-

pleting the nursing program.

Nick FeddorSenior year highlight: Waiting in line for nine hours to see President Barack Obama at the “Together We Thrive: Tucson & America” event in Tucson.College plans: University of Arizona to major in Market-ing, minor in Political ScienceFive-year outlook: I hope to have completed all of my

courses and begun my career.

Dillan MillsSenior year highlight: When I found out I would be speaking at graduation.College plans: I would like to become an engineer when I go to college.Five-year outlook: I see myself doing what I love and that’s working with numbers as my job (engineering).

Rebecca AbitiaSenior year highlight: Getting inducted into the Na-tional Honor Society. I have enjoyed helping and par-ticipating in all of the events that the National Honor Society has sponsored. I enjoy volunteering my time to help others. College plans: I plan on attending Northern Arizona Uni-

versity this fall and am very excited to be starting a new chapter in my life. I am not exactly sure what it is I want to pursue yet. I’ve decided to take my generals first and maybe I’ll get an idea later on.

Five-year outlook: I plan on being finished with college and working on getting a job. I don’t want to start a family until I have at least been out of college and working for two years.

Rebekah RobinsonSenior year highlight: Playing volleyball and meeting a variety of people who have impacted my life.College plans: I plan on attending the U of A to study Physiology aspiring to become a physical therapist. Five Year Outlook: I plan on having a (BS) degree in ei-ther physiology, or human anatomy and working on my

masters or doctorate. I hope to remain determined and focused.

Grad Night a fun, safe way to say goodbye

314 Grads Like this

By Karen Walenga @ www.sahuaritasun.com

A mix of entertainment, food and prizes are highlights of the 20th annual, all-night graduation party Thursday night for new Sahuarita High School graduates.

The festivities begin immediately following the 7 p.m. SHS gradua-tion ceremony at the high school campus.

Grad Night, which also takes place on the SHS campus, runs until 6 a.m. Friday.

The theme for this year’s event — sponsored by the local S.T.O.P. (Sahuarita Team Offers Prevention) committee — is Sahuarita Mus-tangs Making Memories, says Marty Moreno, S.T.O.P.’s secretary/trea-surer.

Grad Night is free to SHS seniors, who also can bring one guest for free, and for SHS juniors, thanks to a donation from Freeport-McMo-Ran Copper & Gold, Moreno said.

Among the prizes the graduates can win in drawings at the party are a car from the Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts; the DVD of the action-adven-ture movie “Inception,” gift cards to electronics stores and more.

Activities will include rides on a mechanical bull, a caricature artist and a fortune teller. In addition, the teens can have their pictures taken in a dual-sided photo booth, get a temporary tattoo, and enjoy a 3 a.m. showing of “Inception,” the PG-13 science-fiction thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

New this year is a zero-gravity carnival ride certain to sweep the teens off their feet.

A tasty variety of food and beverages will include hamburgers and hot dogs, pizza, ice cream sundaes, eegee’s flavored icy drinks, fresh fruit, soda pop and coffee, Moreno says.

Those donating and helping with the food include the Optimist Club of Green Valley/Sahuarita, eegee’s, Schwan’s, Pizza Hut, Sertino’s Cof-fee and Ice Cream, and Fry’s Food Store.

Free gifts for the SHS seniors will include a personal flip-it book of themselves in motion.

The event will wrap up Friday morning after the Agent of Change scholarship is awarded by the Green Valley News and Sun and Freeport, and one lucky graduate’s name is drawn to win a silver, low-mileage, 2003 Ford Taurus car provided by the Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts.

“It’s a beautiful car,” says Car Nuts member Lila Szedlus, noting that the winner must have stayed all night at the party to be eligible.

To raise money to purchase a safe used car and for scholarships for SHS seniors, the Car Nuts every January hold a vintage car show in Tubac, with SHS students assisting at the show, Szedlus points out.

The goal of Grad Night since its start in 1991 has been for the gradu-ates to “live to see the sunrise” and avoid alcohol, drugs and impaired driving, Moreno says.

Students may arrive as late 11 p.m. Thursday, giving them some time to spend with family after the graduation ceremony and change clothes. If they leave prior to 6 a.m. Friday, they know their parents will be contacted and they cannot return to the party.

Grad Night gives the teens a chance to celebrate in a safe environ-ment and avoid making bad choices given the rush of emotions that accompany high school graduation, Moreno says.

“It’s a last night for them to be able to be kids. The next day they are graduates,” who have “passed through the invisible door to adult-hood,” she explains.

S.T.O.P. co-chairwoman Melissa Smith says different groups came together this year to keep Grad Night viable as the volunteer group dealt with a drop in membership and funding.

Individuals from the community stepped up to continue the event and found creative ways to keep Grad Night a Sahuarita tradition, she points out.
