What is your vision for the year ahead?

What is your mission for the year?

My vision is one that encompasses our entire society, to bring about a positive mindset for Rotary and to ensure people relate to Rotary as the philanthropic service organization that it is, to build bonds amongst our own Rotarians through fellowship and friendship and urge them to be the catalysts of change that they can be in society.

Rotary needs to focus on the myriad problems that have bogged down our community and for this we need to trace the issues from the very grass root level. I want Rotary to be the link between the Government, the various NGOs involved in social work and the society, and to do this we have to have excellent public relations and the image that is portrayed to the public should be one of service and integrity, and this shall be done through radio and TV programs and a push to the 4-way test will be

Manandi N Suresh is the scion of the reputed business family 'MANANDI' - a name which is synonymous with textile trading in the whole of South India.

Suresh is the eldest son of Manandi Nanjunda Setty and Nagasundaramma. Suresh shouldered business responsibility at a young age and assisted his father Manandi Nanjunda Setty in the textile business. With his penchant for hard work and efficiency, Suresh has scripted the success story of the Manandi Group and today, they are one of the foremost leaders in textile trading. The entrepreneurial streak in Suresh prompted him to try his hand at real estate development and his Midas touch is evident in this too. He is the Director of Eagleton Golf Resort—a leading golf destination in Bangalore. In short, he wears several hats with consummate ease!

Suresh's sojourn with the Rotary movement began in the year 1982, when he was invited to join Rotary Bangalore South. Rest, as they say, is history. 28 years of serving the needy through the various avenues of Rotary service by assuming several positions at the Club level till he touched the peak there and became president of Rotary Bangalore South in the year 1996-97. Under his Presidentship, Rotary South scaled to greater heights. At the District level, between the years 1997 and 2009 Suresh has worked in various capacities such as Assistant Governor, District Assembly Chairman and District Conference Chairman.

Any other man would have been happy to rest on his laurels but not this extraordinary person - he was the President of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), the leading body of all industrialists and business leaders in Karnataka, during the year 2005-06.

At the national level, he is the executive committee member of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and is also the executive member of Confederation of All India Traders Association, New Delhi.

Coming from a religious and devout family the making of a great saint was visible right from his childhood. Inspired by Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, he underwent rigorous training at Chinmaya Sandeepany, Powai in Mumbai and mastered all the scriptures. His soul stirring bhajans in his golden rich voice and crystal clear chanting of the Vedic mantras has today become yardstick for any one who wants to practise them in the correct manner. He is popular for his lucid commentaries on Dr. DVG’s ‘Kagga’ ªÀÄAPÀÄwªÀÄä£À PÀUÀÎ). His organisational capabilities are clearly evident in the number of projects that he has successfully completed all over Karnataka. His concern for rural development is visible in the progress he has done in development of Chinmaya Grameena Vidyalaya at Chokkahalli in Kolar District and the Chinmaya Child Welfare development at Chinnapana halli. The greatest quality of Brahmaji is his total accessibility to the public.

RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the 2010-11 RI theme, Building Communities—Bridging Continents, during the opening plenary session of the 2010 International Assembly.

Klinginsmith said he arrived at the theme after reviewing RI themes of years past. He noticed that only a few spoke to non-Rotarians.

“As a result, I decided to search for a briefly stated theme that would fulfill two objectives: the first to explain Rotary to non-Rotarians, and the second to validate our work for Rotarians,” he said. “The words I have selected to describe Rotary’s current mission and to highlight our achievements are what we do best: Building Communities — Bridging Continents.”

‘Building Communities — Bridging Continents’ is 2010-11 RI theme

Thanks to the foresight of one man and his mission to ensure that Karnataka stays on the global investors’ radar, the Global Investors Meet (GIM) held in Bangalore not only translated into mega bucks (MOUs worth 3.29 lakh crores signed) – well, we hope all of them fructify, well, even if all don’t and some do, it firmly established Karnataka as a favoured destination for industry bigwigs to put their moolah in. This will help build communities and bridge continents in true Rotary spirit. The big investment mela to attract mega bucks for the State was successful in strengthening ‘Brand Karnataka’ in the industrial map of India. The chief architects of this power meeting - the Hon. Chief Minister of Karnataka - Shri. B.S.Yedyurappa and Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, visionary and entrepreneur in equal measure will be felicitated by Rotary International Dist.3190, as they epitomize this year’s RI theme “Building Communities – Bridging Continents”.

Shri Kris Gopalakrishnan is an Indian industrialist, software engineer and one of the 7 founders of Infosys Technologies, a global consulting and IT services company based in India. Kris is recognized as a global thought leader. He was selected in Thinkers 50, an elite list of global business thinkers compiled by Des Dearlove and Stuart Crainer, in association with the IE Business School, Madrid, and the London Business School's Management Innovation Lab.

Kris is the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industries(CII) Southern Regional Council and on the Board of Governors at Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore. Kris is also the Chairman of Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (IIITM), Kerala, and Vice Cha i rman o f the In fo rma t ion Technology Education Standards Board (B ITE S) se t up by Karnataka Government. He is a member of ACM, IEEE and IEEE Computer Society.

He advised the government on the Global Investors Meet, and said: "the timing of the event is perfect... we needed it." Overall, with 7,600 delegates, 3,900 companies, 18 countries and 21 states descending at the gala event, the government saw success as anticipated.

This special issue of the GML is a forerunner and gives a peek into the person who is at the helm of affairs this year, DG Manandi Suresh and his vision which he hopes to fulfill along with his hugely talented and committed team of

Rotarians and the strong support of his Anne Srimathi Suresh and his family. The “Building communities– Bridging continents” theme given by RI for 2010–11, is epitomized by the events around us and we are lucky to be able to enjoy the proactive community that we live in. The District Publications Committee will be your eyes and ears for the year and bring you Rotary and other interesting tit bits for your reading pleasure.

given because of our note book programs as well. My special areas of interest are a) health–for children in terms of neonatal ICUs which are badly needed, for older children by providing them free heart surgeries (I dream of completing one surgery every day), b) Economic Independence by giving relevant Vocational training, esp. to the marginalized sections of our society like Autistic individuals and Children with learning disabilities and of course concentrate on the need of the hour—Awareness program on conservation of water, and providing safe drinking water for all especially for rural school children. In addition to the above, I plan to technologically empower all clubs and the District and to this end, a separate post of Director, Technology is created at the district level, so that applications like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc., become potent tools of communication, esp. as people are strapped for time and getting across from place to place in Bangalore becomes daunting. These applications will bring people closer more easily and efficiently. Rotary being a group of professionals and business-men, I would like to catalogue all the products being manufactured/traded by our fellow Rotarians which will bring about more awareness of our own fraternity.

If technologically we are advancing, we are still lagging behind in our rural sectors, which will be our focus - we shall endeavour to achieve rural economic development for which again separate directors have been put in place. In today's young India, youth as a force is undeniable and even RI has understood the importance of this potent group and RI has added fifth Avenue of service of youth as “New Generation Service” which is a landmark decision and goes to show the importance placed by RI on the role of youth, so we will have a concentrated drive to induct young members into Rotary.

Disaster management has assumed greater proportions recently, where a calamity needs an immediate redressal mechanism and hence all Clubs shall address this issue at their jurisdictional

level, to dedicate at least two meetings and to create a minimum of two volunteers .

It is the other way around. Rotary, as an NGO has existed for over 105 years, the others are late entrants replicating what we have been doing successfully for over a century. Rotary's presence and

relevance is indisputable and is known as an organization which walks the talk. Let me give you an example – when actor Mel Gibson wanted to donate a million dollars to the relief work in South America post a hurricane, he insisted that this donation shall be made only through Rotary because of i ts transparent policies. We are not any NGO, we are the only one the world can turn to confidently.

All projects have to be initiated and executed by individual Rotary club.

People often say that Rotary clubs are replicating work done by NGOs. What do you feel about this? What is the relevance of Rotary in our society today?

What is the role of the DG? What do you feel about individual projects to be carried out by DGs?

District Governor and the district is only an administrative body which liaisons between the service provider (the club) and the beneficiary (society). We are also here to help any club which needs assistance in any way.

Women definitely play a very focal role particularly in executing projects. As they say ‘when you want something

said, ask a man; when you want something done, ask a woman’– without our women Rotarians, we would be that much poorer in our membership strength.

Involvement of Anns and Annets particularly in health, education will complement other efforts. Annets will have the exposure to the community. This will make them more empathetic to the needs of the society, and will make them better human beings. Anns are the strength on which we lean on when we join Rotary and we draw from this reserve unabashedly and copiously every day that we are in Rotary.

What is the importance of women in Rotary today? How can women play a focal role in assistance to society?

Anns and Annets are also a part of the Rotary movement. How do you think they should be roped into the avenues of service, and in your vision for the future?

Rtn. Nalini Nanjundayya ina Tete–a-tete with DG MN Suresh…

So “Today as we know the world is shrinking and getting smaller. There is a crying need for community help and service. Women have extraordinary strength, and sensitivity to understand and address issues. So, I would appeal to all the women in Rotary to channel their endeavor to achieve the goal of “Building communities – Bridging continents”., and believe that 'YES! WE CAN!”

S o f t s p o k e n a n d courteous, the First Lady of the District Mrs. Srimathi Suresh, manages to say a lot in a few words.

On completing her basic education in the sleepy town of Bangarpet, she entered her new household as a coy bride at 17. Family responsibilities and three daughters followed soon after. Reminiscing about their childhood, Mrs Suresh says that imbibing the values of responsible freedom and respect for tradition, makes her a proud mother of daughters who are women of substance. Being in joint family, has given her an ability to get along with many people with differing personalities. Having moved from her status of mother to grandmother, age sits lightly on the smiling Mrs. Srimathi

Inspired by her husband, the Dist Governor, Manandi Suresh, she has stepped out of her comfort zone to support and further the cause of Rotary. Being the bulwark at home ensuring that he is free to take up various positions and activities in Rotary, has been an immense contribution even if a silent one. One more proof that behind every successful man there is a woman!! (Not that there is a need for proof in today's world!!)

Excited about the ensuing Rotary year, Mrs. Srimathi Suresh looks forward to the opportunity to meet people at different places. “I am always amazed at the different kind of people I am able to

meet. They may be different, but what binds them is the thread of Rotary. They are different, yet similar – all wanting to make a difference to the world, and the immediate society around them. This is

the one most important things about Rotary, which both excites me and humbles me”.

As the First Lady of the District, we will see a lot of her—as a wife, a friend and a partner in Rotary. We should be proud

of these torch-bearers of the Rotary flame.

Is there a message for the women in Rotary? Speaking like a true feminist, she says that women should recognize

their strengths–multi-tasking and sensitivity— to s p r e a d l o v e a n d confidence in the world, and Rotary is a great forum to reach out to the underprivileged and deprived in this world. “Today as we know the world is shrinking and getting smaller. There is a c r y i n g n e e d f o r community help and service. Women have extraordinary strength, a n d s e n s i t i v i t y t o understand and address issues. So, I would appeal

So, I would appeal

to all the women in Rotary to channel their endeavor to achieve the goal of “Building communities–Bridging continents”, and believe that 'YES! WE CAN!”

With the reins of the Rotary year being handed over to him, all the Rotarians of RI Dist 3190 can rest assured that for him "Service Above Self" is the essence of his existence and he has admirably lived this tenet by "Building Communities and Bridging Continents" – and takes the pledge as District Governor that he shall continue to do so. Ladies and Gentleman, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this multi faceted, amiable person – Manandi Suresh – as our leader for 2010–11! Welcome, Sir!
