"A savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord!" - Lk 2:11
Brothers and sisters, praising our Savior for all He has done is the greatest joy of life! It is wonderful to be able to do this together this Christmas. A most heartfelt welcome to all of you!
This summer I had a unique opportunity to go on a long retreat and also work with Mother Teresa's sisters in Ethiopia. I lifted you up often in my prayers before God. Through those experiences, I am coming to realize more and more how our American culture, as blessed as we are materially, is suffering deeply from spiritual sickness. So many of us feel unloved, struggle to find meaning and purpose in life, or are enslaved to our own desires and our own will.
Jesus has come to heal and save. He is love made flesh; he is the meaning we are searching for; he is the great liberator. But he comes not to overpow-er us, rather we see him born as a helpless child to invite our adoration and our free choice of love. Doing his will is what makes us truly happy. But he does not force us to do his will. We must freely relinquish our own plans and desires and choose his plan and desire. This is what it means to truly call Jesus "Lord."
As we sing "Joy to the world, the Lord is come!" this Christmas, let us truly make him the Lord of our lives. This is the greatest response to the gift of the Savior.
A very merry Christmas to you and yours! Fr Dave

ANDREA KOZLOWSKI
The Legend Behind the Carol: Some of our popular traditional carols come with some
very interesting history. This week we look at Silent
Night.
The legend goes that in the country of Austria in 1818, a
young priest by the name of Father Joseph Mohr faced a
rather large disappointment. The organ for his church, St.
Nicholas’s, would no longer work. Mice were thought to
be the guilty culprits. He was devastated that there would
not be any music for the Christmas Eve mass. Father
Mohr took a poem he composed, “Stille Nacht”, and asked
a local organist to set it to music that would only need a
guitar accompaniment and would be mostly sung.
Thank you to those involved in the Children’s Choir!
Our final rehearsal is this weekend, December 17th
between the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30a.m. Masses.
Thank you to those of you involved in the Young Adult
Choir! We could still use more! Please join us for next
rehearsal this Wednesday, December 20th
from 6-7
p.m.

KNOW YOUR LITURGY
O Antiphons. During the week before Christmas, the
Church sings / prays the “O Antiphons.”
“The Roman Church has been singing the ‘O’ Antiphons
since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons
that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer
from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology
that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messi-
anic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming
Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes,
but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the im-
perative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Di-
vine Messiah.” (from “The ‘O Antiphons’ of Advent” on
the USCCB web site)
The antiphons name Jesus by the Old Testament refer-
ences to the coming Messiah (O Wisdom, O Israel, O
Root of Jesse, O Key of David, O Radiant Dawn, O King
of All Nations, O Emmanuel). If you read the verses of
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, you will find the seven O
Antiphons incorporated into the hymn.
St. Vincent de Paul
Third Sunday of Advent
In today’s Gospel John the Baptist says, “I am the voice of
one crying in the desert; make straight the way of the
Lord.” Let us ask for the grace to help others to know the
love of the Lord.
Christmas is a time of love and gift giving…please give
to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who
do not have clothes and food can share in the blessings
of Christmas.
