Good News Reflection 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 12, 2017

Wisdom 6:12-16 Ps 63:2-8

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Matthew 25:1-13

Trusting an illogical God

This Sunday's Gospel reading shows us what it means to be truly foolish. We believe

in Christ -- good! We pray -- good! We put time into our faith growth and we value

opportunities for more faith formation -- very wise! And we say that we trust God --

wonderful!

But what happens when God doesn't answer our prayers fast enough? What if we need

Christ's loving embrace or his protection from evil and yet we're suffering with no end in sight? Where is Jesus

then?

Usually, God's timing is not ours. We think we have the right idea about how soon God should intervene when

we ask for his help. Right now is a good time for it, right? Of course! But perhaps not from God's perspective.

(Why do we want to leave God in charge anyway, if he doesn't see things our way, huh?)

When we despair over unanswered prayer, the reality behind it is that we're emotionally unprepared for any

timing that's different from what we think it should be. The foolish bridesmaids thought the groom would ar-

rive before their lamps burned out. They thought they understood the situation. Do we?

Furthermore, if God's plans are illogical -- if they don't make sense to us -- we distrust them. And then we get

ourselves into the mess of trying to handle things apart from God.

We cannot trust our logic. We cannot trust our perception or our understanding of the situations we're in. The

sooner we decide to enjoy the absurdity of being a Christian, the sooner we will find out that God's ways are

awesomely much, much better than anything we can imagine!

Questions for Personal Reflection: What have you resisted doing because it doesn't make sense? What can you do, where can you turn, to whom

can you go for help in discerning whether or not it's God's plan for you?

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: How do you know when an illogical plan is really what God wants you to do? What's happened in your life

that has taught you to trust the Holy Spirit's surprises? Share a lesson you learned when you weren't ready for

God's plan because you didn't believe it. © 2017 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Impreso con derechos.

32do. Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Noviembre 12, 2017

Sabiduría 6, 12-16 Salmo 63 (62), 2-8

1 Tesalonicenses 4, 13-18 Mateo 25, 1-13

sufrimiento? ¿Dónde está Jesús entonces?

Prayer Corner

Please keep all those who are in the military, or are ill or suffering in your prayers.

For those who are ill or homebound: For Andrei Muñoz R. and for all those struggling with cancer and other illnesses

or upcoming surgeries

We pray for peace throughout our entire world. We remember our family members and friends who are serving in the

military: Michael Pennington, Mike Andre, Alec Ogg, Aaron Nguyen

If you would like to add the name of someone who is serving in the military, please call the office.

For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed: Larry Stothoff

podamos imaginar.

Preguntas para la Reflexión Personal:

¿A qué te has resistido porque no tiene sentido? ¿Qué puedes hacer, a dónde puedes dirigirte, a quién puedes

© 2017 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Impreso con derechos.

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Saint Albert the Great, Bishop and doctor – Nov 15

“I adore You (precious Blood) enclosed in the veins of Jesus, preserved in His humanity like the manna in

the golden urn, the memorial of the eternal redemption which He accomplished during the days of His earthly

life. I adore You, Blood of the new, eternal Testament, flowing from the veins of Jesus in Gethsemane, from

the flesh torn by scourges in the Praetorium, from His pierced hands and feet and from His opened side on

Golgotha. I adore You in the sacraments, in the Eucharist, where I know You are substantially pre-

sent…” (Saint Albert the Great) Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.

Albany Knights of Columbus Council 1577 is sponsoring a family prayer program called the Holy Family Pray-

er. The State Deputy of Oregon received two large Icons from the Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, for this

program. Oregon actually has two of these Icons; one moving down the eastern side of Oregon and the other

moving down the western side. Our Lady of Perpetual Help (St Mary’s) has been honored to start the icon on

the west side. The intent of the program is to get families to pray together, focusing on the love and support

of the Holy Family.

The large icon will be presented to the parish on the weekend of November 11/12. It will move to another

parish after the 11 am mass.

There is a small statue and a smaller photo icon that will remain at our parish. They will be blessed by Father

Edwin at the 11 am mass and rotated among the parish families on a two week basis.

If you are interested in having one of the icons, you can contact Stuart Conser or Chris James. If you have a

preference between the statue or photo, let them know. The icons will be exchanged at the end of mass on

the appropriate weekend.

Healing Mass November 17th at 7pm.

Everyone is welcome!

NOTES FROM THE LITURGIST…

Confession… Counseling… and Spiritual Direction…

Confession, Counseling and Spiritual Direction (SD) are the main keys and great tools for ourselves especially in the aspect of human maturity and personal healing. We can say that they are similar, yet distinct, different, yet overlapping.

These are essential to our lives because they make us healthier and mature body, mind, and soul.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Confession). This sacrament is a celebration of Christ’s forgiving love by two sinners (the priest and the penitent) AND reconciliation of the penitent to God and to the community. I consider that the confession room is a hospital of mercy. Many times, when I go to the confession room to get Fr. Edwin to prepare for mass, I jokingly tell him, “Doc, no more patients in line.” Yes, it is true because we human beings are emotionally and spiritually sick when we have sinned. That is why we go to the hospital of mercy to be cured and when we come out we are pure and spiritually healed because of the power of the sacrament. Many people asked for confession especially when they are experiencing or facing painful and shameful problems in their lives because of the blessing that the sacrament may offer and the confidentiality it can provide. To have a very meaningful and effective confession we must prepare ourselves and be ready to de-sire to change our lives. Only an ordained bishop or priest can minister this sacrament.

Counseling, this session is very important when a person is troubled by emotional or relational issues and wants to find ways to overcome this issue. It is a series of meetings and activities that can help the client to be more effective in the daily life of a normal person. A counselor, a lay person or a priest can administer this session.

Spiritual Direction, we go to a spiritual director when we are looking for a deeper relationship with God or to clarify our religious experiences or to what God wants from us. A spiritual director can be a spiritu-al lay person and of course a priest or a bishop.

There is a commonality to counseling and spiritual direction but a different form.

In regards to these processes in our human growth, sometimes we forget the distinction of each.

When we avail of these human processes – pray about it… discern well so that whoever will adminis-ter to us will help us more to become a better person.

Whatever process we need, may we take our journey seriously. We are growing – not only growing older but also growing up emotionally, physically and of course growing up closer to God. For this growth – the Church needs to provide all these three types of help. The priests are here to help you, just let them know what process is the best to help you in your longings---either Confession, Counseling or a Spiritual Di-rection.
