Program Goals: Sacramento Hmong New Year’s Education Department (SHNYED) supports and promotes K-12 education and higher education within the Hmong community in Sacramento by offering scholarship opportunities to students while preserving the Hmong heritage. The Education Department will award 6 scholarships to selected students:

- 3 high school scholarships - 2 college scholarships - 1 graduate scholarship

SHNYED does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. In support of SHNY’s mission and goals, SHNY encourages applications from students who have Hmong ancestry. Applicant Eligibility: All student applicants must meet the following criteria:

- Attend an accredited graduate school for Fall 2016 - Spring 2017 - Be a resident of the Sacramento County or Yolo County (Proof: bills or statement) - Possess a minimum GPA of 3.0 (Unofficial transcript) - Two letters of recommendation must accompany the application from separate individuals, neither of whom

are related to the applicant - Submit a short personal statement describing your career and educational goals and involvement with the

Hmong community (min of 250 words, max of 500 words) - Submit an essay answering the following question(s) in English (max of 1000 words, double space - include

word count): What is one rising issue within the Hmong community? What interventions or solutions do you think can help curtail the problem?

Selection of Scholarship Recipients SHNY Education’s Scholarship Selection Committee will make awards based on the recipient’s demonstrated commitment to the Hmong community, academic achievements, career goals, and leadership skills. All applicants will be notified by email of the status of their application by July 8th, 2016 regardless of outcome.

v Personal Statement & Essay Please provide a written statement using font size 11 or 12 and double-spaced with word count. The length for the personal statement should be at least 250 words, but no more than 500 words. The length for the essay should not exceed 1000 words. Do not include your name on any of the pages of the personal statement and the essay.

v Resume Please submit your resume using font size 11 or 12. The resume should not exceed 2 standard letter-sized pages in total length.

v Letters of Recommendation The letters of recommendation should be written within the last six month. The letters must be clearly refer to you by name and provide comments that describe your character and abilities. A parent or close relatives will not be considered a valid reference. The name, occupation, and contact information for each author must appear on the letter.

v Certifications I understand that late or incomplete applications will not be considered. My ability to accurately follow instruction will be considered during the selection process. I understand that I will forfeit my award if I do not attend the awards banquet. A one-month notice will be given to the applicant on when and where the banquet will take place. I certify that I am currently a resident of the Sacramento County or Yolo County I certify that I will be attending an accredited graduate school this upcoming school year 2016-2017.

I hereby authorize SHNY to utilize information on my application and any photo that I provide for publicity or public relations purposes.

I understand that if I am selected as a recipient of this scholarship, I would need to provide in a timely manner a portrait color photo (head shot) 2 inches square and 300 dpi (600 pixels square) to be used in SHNY’s website and booklet.
