Vice Presidents’ Planning Forum Wednesday, February 15, 2012
7:30 a.m. —9:30 a.m. (Breakfast included) Valero Headquarters (near UTSA)
As our chapter considers new ways to engage business leaders in our program offer-ings, we are looking for the experience and insight of training and development leaders to help us determine our future direction. Please consider inviting your organization’s leaders to this breakfast. Not only will we gain from their valuable input during this forum, but they may also enjoy several benefits. For example, they may find the oppor-tunity to extend their circle of contacts and perhaps develop new business, learn new training and development perspectives and ideas from their peers, contribute to the development of SAASTD board of directors and membership, and more! Recommend your organizational leaders to Al Aranda at [email protected].

Chapter Membership
Programs targeted to your community – Your feedback as a member helps us develop our learning events on an ongoing basis. Also, you could serve the chapter as a Featured Member in our Trainer’s Talk Newsletter or committee volunteer.
Network with local professionals – Your membership provides you access to
the SAASTD Member Directory. You can connect with another member any time. Simply click on their name and then click “Send Message.” Personally, I’ve called on other members to discuss speech-to-text software, graphic size con-siderations, video software, and HR policies.
Discover career opportunities – If you are looking for new opportunities, you can use our Job Bank to help you find your next great employer.
Join local special interest groups (SIGs) – You are welcome to attend and share your expertise at our eLearning Lunch & Learn SIG or the Training eX-change SIG. (Learn more at http://www.saastd.org/events)
Access resources in your backyard - You can view archived speaker-provided materials and Trainer’s Talk Newsletters. Members can also check-out ASTD Learning System materials to study for the CPLP.
Be part of your area’s learning community – Join us on Twitter (@SAASTD), Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Plus, members can advertise and promote their business through the Professional Provider page.
And more! You may be asking yourself, how do I become a PO2 Member? Starting this year, SAASTD will start processing PO2 Memberships and give you a $50 off the total regular price of membership. So, next time you receive a reminder to renew your ASTD National Membership, we’ll make it easy for you to renew! Just let us know that it’s time, and we’ll process the paperwork for you. Plus, you’ll feel good know-ing that ASTD National will make a small contribution to the chapter on your behalf each time you renew your PO2 Membership. (Learn more at http://www.saastd.org/ChIP) I look forward to serving you this year as your VP of Membership. You are welcome to e-mail me at [email protected]. For individuals new to SAASTD, we look forward to learning more about you soon. For individuals with Chapter or ASTD National only memberships, please consider becoming a PO2 Member to make the most of your membership. Final Thoughts - Last year, I saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by telling GEICO that I am an ASTD National Member. I further maximized my savings by also letting them know I am a SHRM National Member. I wish you the best in your personal and professional goals!

Shannon Armstead, VP of Administration Shannon Armstead is a Performance Consultant at The SCOOTER Store. Three
major influences shape who she is today. The patience and love of her family—
especially her Grandmother— taught her to respect the value and potential of
those with whom she shares her journey. A decade working in call centers all
over the world showed her that people can achieve far more than they would
have imagined. Her life’s biggest lesson relates to her training philosophy and
her love of people. Dale Carnegie, in his book “How to Win Friends and Influence
People,” said to smile, use people’s names, show a genuine interest in others,
and always treat people as if they are more important than you. Shannon’s
training philosophy is “They’ll forget what you told them, they may forget what you showed them,
but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.”

CLIFF Notes SIG Meeting Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions by Dan Ariely The basic assumption that is shared by economists, and most people in general, is that humans are rational. This is the simple and compelling idea that we are capable of making the right decisions for ourselves. However, a competing view is that humans are irrational – that we are far from perfec-tion. Come delve into the reality of how people behave or make decisions and how you can leverage that information effectively. Book Review
The Learning & Development Book By Tricia Emerson and Mary Stewart
The following book review was excerpted from astd.org.
Everyone thinks they know everything about training. Right? We’ve all
gone to school, been trained on the job, and maybe endured the occasional
corporate seminar. But if you’re a professional in this field, you know that’s
familiarity, not expertise. Instructional design and implementation are not
as easy as they look. You know there’s an art to enabling people to truly
change their behavior, moving themselves and their organizations toward
the right future.
That’s what inspired The Learning & Development Book. Open the book to any page and you’ll find a
short chapter that holds one hard-won lesson -- the reward of decades implementing instructional
design in real-world settings.
Why should learning be more like playing?
Is the culture of your organization working against you?
Should you really measure the effects of your training program?
Have you ever thought that learning begins when training ends?
Each chapter holds a nugget of wisdom on subjects like these. Whether you’re a battle-tested edu-
cator or embarking on your first big training job, we hope we can give you tips, tools, big ideas, and
(bonus!) a smile.
