unteer firemen who ownmotorcycles.

“We just get togetherand raise money for differ-ent charities in differentareas and just for the loveof riding,” Johnson said.

During burn week, thechapter will ride toScottsville, present thecheck and spend sometime with the kids.

“The kids light up whenthey see you pull in on amotorcycle, and they seethe fire truck,” he said.“Just them being kids. Theydon’t have to hide theirscars, they don’t have toworry about being teasedor made fun of. It justtouches your heart whenthey run up to you andwant to give you a hug andthank you for doing whatyou do.”

They chose LakeBistineau State Park, he

says, because the fundrais-er has grown over the yearsand needed more space tohost their events duringthe weekend. The firstevents were hosted atCamp Joy, but as it grew, ithad to be moved, he says.

“Webster Parish hasembraced our event, andhas helped us obtain thepark,” he said. “They’vedonated the park fees tous, and we get an advertis-ing grant from the WebsterParish (Convention andVisitors Bureau), andthey’ve opened their armsand welcomed us 100 per-cent. The staff at the statepark has just been so help-ful to accommodate this.”

As the fundraiser hasgrown, the very kids thatbenefit from it have comeback to help with it.

Bridgett Dauzat, 27, ofCastor, was a camper andlater a camp counselor atthe burn camp, and with-out it, she says she doesn’tknow what she would havedone.

Her story begins in1993, when she and hercousins were playing in theyard. Her father was burn-ing some stumps and thegas can blew up and shotacross the yard. She suf-fered second and thirddegree burns over 76 per-cent of her body.

“My mom and dad tack-led me down to the groundand put me out and rushedme to the hospital,” shesaid, “and I was sent to LSUfrom Homer (then HomerMemorial Hospital).”

In June 1994, sheattended her first camp.

Growing up was hardfor her, she says.

“A lot of the kids pickedon me,” she said. “I had avery bad problem withself-esteem. I didn’t think Iwas pretty or anything. Istayed active in sports, andbefore I got burned, I wasin a lot of pageants.”

Following the accident, she was pulled out of thepageant scene until herhigh school years when she

competed at LakesideJr./Sr. High School. Shesays she placed in the pag-eants almost each time.

Although she grew up inCastor, she spent herschool years at Glenbrookand at Lakeside so shecould play sports.

Going through the after-math and learning to livewith the disfiguration,Dauzat has become astronger person, sayingshe learned looks aren’teverything.

“It’s about what’s on theinside and how you havean outlook on things,” shesaid. “You just push for-ward through life no mat-ter what. Burn camphelped me find who I am,and it let me know I’m notthe only one. There’s otherpeople and there wereother people that wereworse than me.”

She went back to theburn camp each year, graduating from camper tojunior counselor to campcounselor to help other

kids.“It was a big change,”

she said, “because I hadbeen going for so long thatthey made me a juniorcounselor when I was 14,and I went to a full-fledgedcounselor when I was 17.When I had my kids and Ididn’t go, it was heart-breaking.”

She has children and is

now married and movingforward with her life. Shedoes go to the camp fortwo or three days a year, but this is the first year shehas been able to partici-pate in the burn run andgive back to the camp.

“They’re like a secondfamily,” she says of every-one at the burn camp.
