Civic Precinct UpdateA space for Ryde’s creative talentThe City of Ryde has a well-deserved reputation as a hub for the area’s cultural and community activities. The redevelopment of the Civic Precinct will reinforce the location as a centre for creativity and provide a new home for many of these activities, one that is flexible enough to accommodate the wide variety of events Ryde has to offer. The new Civic Centre will have adaptability built in. For example, the flat floor auditorium (larger than the existing Civic Hall) will comfortably accommodate 400 people seated theatre style, or 260 people with space for an orchestra. Alternatively it will be able to seat 200 people in a banquet setting. In addition, a generous stage and wing area will provide space for large groups of performers.Spacious backstage areas are another key auditorium feature and will include a ‘green room’ (an area backstage set aside for performers prior to their performance), which will be larger than the stage and suitable for rehearsals.Technical facilities will include a dedicated control room for sound and lighting, ‘back-of-house’ storage spaces, a goods lift and a kitchen to cater for auditorium functions. The new Civic Centre will provide a versatile auditorium for community activities that currently do not have a fully functional, accessible place to stage events. There will be separate function rooms that special interest groups can hire for their events. These combined facilities will replace the existing Civic Hall, the old Argyle Theatre (that has been unusable for many years) and the Argyle Hall which has had to close recently due to its poor condition. The auditorium will be able to cater for indoor events from ballroom dancing to exercise classes, art shows, rehearsals, exhibitions and receptions. Amateur theatre, school shows and competitions, seminars and citizenship ceremonies will finally have a practical and purpose-built space. The function rooms will be ideal for smaller group meetings and presentations. The right mix of facilities that serve many community purposes has driven the design of the Ryde Civic Precinct redevelopment. Providing the community with new, versatile and functional spaces at no extra cost to ratepayers will ensure that these facilities will be comprehensively used for many years to come.
