More than two years ago my attention was drawn to Livvi’s Place, which was a proposal for an all-inclusive playground at Yamble Reserve on Quarry Road, Ryde. The project was in memory of Olivia Perkins, whose parents, John and Justine, are the founders of the Touched By Olivia Foundation, which is focused on improving the health and happiness of Australian children.

Over the past couple of years, I have attended events organised to help raise awareness and funds for Livvi’s Place – I was there when my ministerial colleague, The Hon. Andrew Constance MP, pledged $200,000 to our community, when St George Foundation announced their $50,000 donation, and when the Mayor hosted his annual Golf Day, I was there to support the dream that all the children in Ryde could play together in the near future.

On Sunday 3 February the dream became a reality with more than 1,500 people in attendance at the unveiling of this joint community effort. The joy on the faces of the children present was priceless, and the sense of having established such an incredible, fun and engaging space for children of all ages by the sponsors, parents, carers, teachers, the City of Ryde’s mayor, councillors and staff was described as profoundly satisfying by all involved.

For their contribution to the projects I specifically mention my colleague Mr Andrew Constance, the Minister for Ageing, and Minister for Disability Services; my Federal Parliament colleague John Alexander; Ryde city councillors Artin Etmetdjian and Roy Maggio; Mitch Corn, Iwan Sunito, Fiona Morrison, Jeff Kerr, Liz Read, Ian Andrews, Hamish Putt, Dan Stace, Jay Laga’aia, Jo Blackmore, James Rosenwax, Judy Lewis, Renata Cooper, Kaylar Michaelian, Lance Brooks, Ingrid Hazelspring, Tony Abboud, Craig Wiseman, Robbie Pattinson, Lindy Stuart, Touched By Olivia founders, John and Justine Perkins, and the unstoppable Rebecca Ho, who is the chief executive officer of the foundation.

The design of the park is quite remarkable and really has something to offer everyone. There are swings and sandpits, audible and visual activities, and areas in which to

relax as well as areas in which to run. Included is a large, connected families-and-barbecue area that brings the community together with state-of-the-art facilities. I am confident that this playground will serve as a significant asset to our existing community and play a role in creating and strengthening future communities.

Local Woman of the YearRoseanna GalloRoseanna Gallo was announced as the Local Women of the Year for the electorate of Ryde as part of the 2013 NSW Women of the Year Awards.

The NSW Women of the Year Awards showcase inspirational stories of commitment, sacrifice and extraordinary achievement. There are so many wonderful women who are local heroes and volunteers who make an outstanding contribution to the NSW community and they deserve to be recognised.

Women, like our own Roseanna, are fantastic role models and their stories inspire others to dream and achieve.

Roseanna is an accomplished entertainer who has successfully utilised her skills to bring joy to others and raise much needed funds for local and international charities. These achievements, all voluntary, include being an active member and past president of Macquarie Park Rotary Club, Musical Director of the TWT Ryde Christmas Carols for the last nine years, an event by the Rotary Clubs of Macquarie Park and North Ryde to support Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children. She is an integral part of the local Eastwood Granny Smith Festival and is on the committee for the Lady of Grace Nursing Home.

Furthermore, her work bridges the gaps for the elderly and disabled in our community. She coordinates the Golden A’s, provides grief support, attends and organises communities rallies to raise awareness, runs the St Anthony’s Choir and provides and coordinates entertainment to many of the local nursing homes on a regular and ongoing basis.

QUICK TIPS FOR AVOIDING WASTE:

Ask yourself: “Do I really need this?” If you don’t need it – don’t buy it!

 Choose products with less packaging.

Use re-usable products instead of disposable, one use products such as plastic cutlery and paper plates.

Refuse to use plastic bags when you don’t need them. Keeping some reusable plastic bags in your car will help you remember to bring them when you go shopping.

Use reusable containers to bring your food to work instead of plastic wrap or other disposable packaging.

Send an email or use the phone instead of using a letter or fax.

In October 1985 the Baran family migrated to Sydney and Jacques started working immediately as a Store Manager, Principal of a small business college and Manager of electronic retail stores. He started his education in Syria and migrated to Lebanon where he completed his degrees in Political Science and Business Administration. In Australia, he continued his education at TAFE obtaining a Certificate in Personnel Management in 1986-1987. His work ethic was as strong as his desire to assimilate and celebrate his community strengths.

Volunteering was then reinstated prominently in Jacques routine. In 1995

he commenced helping the Armenian Alexander Nursing Home in Sydney with their administration and interpreting needs. He visited the nursing home residents regularly and provided practical assistance as well as emotional and social support.

He joined North Ryde Community Aid & Information Centre in February 2011 as a volunteer with our Social Support services and not just exclusively for Armenian speaking clients. His escorting of clients to medical appointments and other transport needs is very much relied upon, as is his help with NRCA’s

auspiced Armenian Senior Citizens Social Group.

Every Monday now at Ryde’s Civic Hall Jacques attends and helps in every and any possible way that is required. From serving morning tea, transporting clients with special needs, collecting supplies for the group social activities and packing up at the end of the event, Jacques is always ready and willing to perform his volunteer duties in a very genuine, pleasant and respectful manner. He has great respect for our clients and they have genuine fondness and admiration for him.

Clean Up Australia belongs to our communities and has continued for the past 22 years. On 3 March 2013, I was joined by Bennelong MP, John Alexander, local scout and guide groups, friends and residents to help in the Clean Up Australia Campaign in our backyard at Meadowbank Wharf.

I am continually impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the people of Ryde, who despite inclement weather, arrived with gloves in hand to do their part for our community. The range of bottles, plastics, drink cans and cartons, whilst substantial, appeared to be reduced from last year. Each effort by individuals and groups ensure that our environment is kept free from rubbish.

My Role as a MinisterThe New Year is off and running and I am already busy in my ministerial portfolios – Citizenship and Communities and Aboriginal Affairs.

Just before Christmas I had the honour of handing out the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards at a ceremony in Sydney. A terrific man, Andrew Heslop, won the main award for his work in running Neighbour Day, an initiative that he founded which encourages people to help the more vulnerable in their communities.

There was a sour note to the start of the year when three young men were filmed by security cameras vandalising the Cenotaph in Martin Place in mid-January. I released a media statement condemning the attack on one of the state’s most sacred shrines dedicated to those who fought and died for their country.

A young French man, here on a working visa, has been charged by police.

On a brighter note I attended an historic Australia Day ceremony to celebrate the first time the Aboriginal and Australian flags have flown together atop the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

There was no better place to be on a sparkling Sydney morning than by the Harbour watching those two flags rise together on what was a significant occasion for the entire community.

Later on Australia Day NSW Governor Marie Bashir and I visited the Aboriginal Yabun Festival in Victoria Park, Broadway and had the great pleasure to speak with Shane Phillips, named Australia’s 2013 Local Hero in the Australia Day Awards, for his work in Aboriginal communities .

We are still working on the NSW Government’s new plan for Aboriginal Affairs, based on the recommendations of the Ministerial Taskforce on Aboriginal Affairs.

Consultations will also begin soon with Aboriginal communities on an historic review of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act that will help strengthen the Land Council network in this state.

Next month the NSW Government’s inaugural Multicultural March kicks off.

Tim Taylor from Normanhurst Boys High School was presented with his Lions Youth of the Year Quest winner’s award by Victor Dominello on Wednesday 20 February, 2013.

Tim also won the Public Speaking section of the Quest. The audience was entertained with a battle of words including impromptu and prepared speeches from Ashleigh Lister, Arden Anglican School; Saira Gugnani, Baulkham Hills High School; Declan Noble, Epping Boys High School; Tom Alice, Marist College Eastwood and Tim Taylor, Normanhurst Boys High School.

Narelle Bowen, Tim Radford and Lachlan Scadden-McHugh made up the judging panel with a wealth of educational experience between them.

The judges spent time interviewing the students prior to the public speaking portion of the event. Judging categories include leadership; sporting and cultural activities; citizenship and community involvement; academic; general knowledge and personality skills.

The Youth of the Year Quest is held each year to give students the opportunity to gain vital skills in public speaking and interview techniques.

Students participate in several levels of the Quest, with the final Australian winner travelling overseas as a Lions ambassador to compete in the International Quest. Epping Eastwood Lions Club hosted the club level of the Youth of the Year Quest at Boronia Grove Function Centre at Epping.

Jordan Lane, the 2012 Club and Zone winner spoke to the 2013 students about the importance of taking every opportunity life has to offer before presenting participation awards. Tim Taylor will now participate in the Area Final to be held on 11 March also at Boronia Grove.

Community Colleges Australia Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual to the Community Education Sector – 2012

Colin Allen, Director of Services at The Deaf Society of New South Wales was chosen as the 2012 Outstanding Contributor recipient of the Coverforce sponsored Award because of his ongoing work at state, national – and most importantly – international level.

The organisation provides core services in the traditional areas of need; client and community support, community development, interpreting, education and training, employment and workplace support, advocacy and distribution of information. CCA is pleased that the NSW Government is able to support the work the Deaf Society undertakes in education through the funding provided under the Department’s ACE Program, State Training Services, to deliver VET to the deaf community.

Colin and his client groups perhaps face more challenges than some of our other colleges and individuals working in our community NFP education entities, but he has continued to pursue the ideal of “education for all Australians”. As well as Australians, he has taken a passionate interest in education for the deaf community globally. In 2007 Colin started as an International Project Co-ordinator for the Global Education Pre-Planning Project on the Human Rights of deaf people conducting regional survey work of deaf people in Eastern Europe, Middle Asia, Asia and the Pacific, South America, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Eastern and Southern Africa, Western and Central Africa and Arabia States.

In 2011, Colin stood for, and was successfully elected, as President of the Deaf World Federation. He remains committed and determined to achieve human rights in education, interpreting and access.

He will play a significant role in the Deaf Society of NSW’s preparations to host the 2nd International Conference of the World Federation of the Deaf, to be held on 16–18 October 2013 in Sydney, Australia.

This newsletter was produced using parliamentary entitlements.

The benefits are on show through golf days and events such as the annual Dads v Mates SCG cricket game for bereaved dads.

It was a fun day where everyone had a bat and a bowl on the hallowed turf and the chance to meet others dads like them. Pregnancy Concerns was on hand to provide counselling for dads and partners.

As one dad said, “I had a great time, great to meet other dads, but most of all to just get some time out”.

Pillars of Strength has provided over 1,300 Timeout opportunities and is available to every dad in NSW who has lost his baby or infant in the last three years.

If you or a dad you know could benefit from this help and support please visit our website by searching for Pillars of Strength.

Pillars of Strength, a charity founded by Ryde local Gary Sillett, has received $9,700 as part of the NSW Government’s Participation and Facility Grant Program.

Research shows that a man who is bereaved or who has a sick child is less likely to undertake physical activity whilst they deal with their grief.

Pillars of Strength provides “Timeout” and support for bereaved dads and those with sick babies in hospital.

The Pillars of Strength Timeout program provides sporting opportunities for dads to re-engage, re-focus and re-energise with their mates and other dads who have been through a similar situation.

“This program provides funding for local initiatives that encourage people to be more active on a regular basis”, Mr Annesley said.
