Winners of the City of Ryde Spring Garden Competition 2012 were praised for their creativity, hard work and sustainable gardening practices at a Gala Event on Thursday 1 November at Eden Gardens, North Ryde.

This year’s competition attracted over 40 entries, showcasing an abundance of talented gardeners in our community.

With eight entries each, Best Edible Garden and Best School Garden were the most hotly contested categories.

Entries ranged from simple to ornate, family projects to grand solo efforts. Community groups and commercial gardens were also well represented.

Judges commented on the high standard and presentation of all entries and also on the growing trend towards permaculture and sustainable practices.

While the creators of these beautiful gardens and spaces were singled out for praise, it’s the neighbours, visitors and passers-by who are the overall winners in this competition, not to mention our City’s green reputation!

To see a photo gallery of the winning entries in the City of Ryde Spring Garden Competition 2012 go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/springgardencompetition.

The City of Ryde would like to thank sponsor Eden Gardens North Ryde for their generous support of the Spring Garden Competition 2012.

PARTIES AT THE POOL!Treat your child to a special celebration on their birthday: a fun-filled, two-hour party that your child and their friends will thoroughly enjoy.

At the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre (RALC) we offer a number of different party options:

Supervised partiesA party host supervises the children and organises pool games and activities.

You can choose to have a supervised party with food (the host takes care of the catering) or without food. There’s a variety of catering options to choose from.

Supervised parties are for children aged 5 – 13 years. (Children under the age of 5 years are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by a parent or other adult in the pool.)

The minimum number is 10 children, up to a maximum of 20 children.

Unsupervised partiesThis option requires parents to supervise all guests in the water. There is no age limit or minimum number, but the maximum is 20 children.

No matter which option you choose, we will reserve and decorate a special area for your party and give you access to our fun water features such as the slide, lazy river and wave pool.

We will also provide birthday invitations, free access for up to eight supervising adults and various other extras.

Parties are available from 11.30am – 5.00pm, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, or seven days/week during school holidays.

And don’t forget that come rain, hail or sunshine, the water temperature at the RALC is a constant 29°C, so it’s always a perfect day for a pool party!

For full details of prices, options and conditions, email [email protected] or call 8878 5111. For further information go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ralc.

Looking After Your Furry FriendsPets provide enjoyment and companionship and can be much-loved members of the family. However, being a pet owner is also a big responsibility.

A pet is for life, not just for ChristmasWhen you consider buying a pet, you should consider what kind of animal will be appropriate for your budget, living arrangements, lifestyle and your ability to care for and manage the chosen animal.

While puppies and kittens are irresistibly adorable, you will need to be prepared to provide for a grown animal too, as the average lifespan of a pet is around 12 years, with some living until 15 or even 20 years of age.

You should never give an animal as a gift unless you know for sure that it will be a welcome addition to the recipient’s family.

DogsWhen you take your dog into a public place you must make sure that it does not interfere with the safety or enjoyment of other people.

Your dog should always be kept on a leash in public, except when you’re visiting an off-leash area in one of our parks. You’ll find a list of off-leash areas at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/offleash.

You should always clean up your dog’s droppings. Special bins are provided for this purpose at many of our parks.

Please note that dogs (excepting guide dogs) are not allowed in food preparation areas, playgrounds and recreation areas, school grounds, childcare centres, shopping areas, public pools and wildlife protection areas.

CatsUnlike dogs, cats may move about freely. There are a few exceptions to this, including food preparation areas and wildlife protection areas.

Whilst the legislation does not prohibit cats from being outside and there is no official ‘cat curfew’, Council recommends that all cats be kept indoors, especially at night when they are more likely to fight and hunt local wildlife.

In order to warn wildlife, you are encouraged to put a collar with two bells on your cat.

Happy and healthyBeing a pet owner is a big responsibility. You should ensure that your pet is healthy, well nourished, groomed, vaccinated, properly exercised and socialised and has adequate shelter.

Our pets are a part of the family. Make sure that you repay them for the companionship and pleasure they give you by taking good care of them.

For further information and tips about responsible pet ownership, go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/catsanddogs.

Our Award-Winning Animal Management PlanThe City of Ryde has won Animal Management Plan of the Year at the annual Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) awards.

The Award recognises Council’s effective promotion of responsible pet ownership through public awareness, regulation and suitable infrastructure, and effectively minimising public pet nuisance.

Companion animals play an important role in society and the pleasure of owning a pet carries with it the dual responsibilities of care for the animal, and respect for the community.

It is estimated that around half of the 44,000 local households own either a cat or a dog, so a significant number of residents have a direct involvement in companion animal issues.

Last year, Council Rangers responded to 756 call-outs on various animal issues, including:

138 complaints of stray, abandoned or roaming dogs131 barking dog investigations35 dog attack investigations152 dogs either seized or found, with 83 returned to their owner (55%)124 cats detained, with 15 returned to their owner.

To view the Companion Animal Management Plan, or for further information on responsible pet ownership, go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/catsanddogs.

White Ribbon DayEvery year on White Ribbon Day, communities across Australia band together to take a stand for the elimination of violence against women.

Many prominent Australian men have taken the pledge, including sportsmen, comedians, rock stars and politicians.

The City of Ryde has established a partnership with White Ribbon and is endeavouring to become White Ribbon accredited. This means that we – as individuals, within our workplace and within our community – are all taking action to stop violence against women.

Have Your SayPlanning Agreement between Macquarie University and City of RydeIn August 2009, the Minister for Planning approved the Macquarie University Campus Development Concept Plan which proposes significant development at the campus in Macquarie Park. The Plan allows for an additional:

400,000m2 of commercial space61,000m2 of academic space3,450 student beds.

In total, the development could result in significant increases in student and worker numbers. This change is expected to place extra demands on the existing infrastructure.

In recognition of these impacts, and in accordance with the conditions of consent to the Concept Plan, the City of Ryde has negotiated a planning agreement with Macquarie University.

Under the Agreement, the University will provide up to $18,997,536 in cash and further works-in-kind of approximately $4,500,000. The payment and works will be in place of a contribution made under the City of Ryde Section 94 Contribution Plan 2007.

The Agreement will be on public exhibition from 14 November – 12 December 2012.

You can view the Planning Agreement at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/haveyoursay, the Customer Service Centre at Ryde Civic Centre or at the Ryde Planning and Business Centre located within Top Ryde City shopping centre.
