COVID-19 VACCINES Cottonwood Palo Verde is not one of the COVID-19 Maricopa County "PODS" distributing the COVID-19 vaccine. To sign up and/or receive additional information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine please go to podvaccine.azdhs.gov. Information regarding COVID and the vaccine is being updated on a daily basis. Additional information can also be found on the maricopa.gov website.

SUN LAKES POSSE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT OFFICE The Sun Lakes Posse Medical Equipment Office will be closed Tuesday, February 23

rd for the American Red Cross

Blood Drive.

Normal office hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00am- 12:00 Noon. The office will be closed for Holidays and Special Events. Phone Number: 480-895-8751

MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NON EMERGENCY NUMBER: 602-876-1011

All Sun Lakes residents should have the Maricopa County Sheriff's non-emergency number on their cell phone or home phone for criminal problems. If it is life threatening call 911. HOA's Patrol cannot help with any criminal or emergency issues.

COVID-19 GUIDELINES After you receive your COVID vaccine, you’ll still need to wear a mask and follow quarantine rules when using any of the Cottonwood Palo Verde facilities. The COVID-19 vaccines are expected to be pivotal in getting our pre-pandemic lives back, but that doesn't mean we can let our guard down. The risks are not gone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still recommends wearing a mask, even after you’ve had the vaccine.

Remember no vaccine is 100% effective. Although data from the clinical trials suggests that the COVID-19 vaccines are extremely good, they aren’t perfect. It’s possible a vaccinated person can pick up, carry, and spread the virus that causes COVID-19 to others. We just don’t know yet. This means that while your vaccine should keep you from getting symptoms, there’s a chance you could still pass the virus from person to person. Even worse, you’d have no idea it was happening.

We all need to do our part and follow the mandates placed by our local authorities and the CDC in keeping each other safe.

2021 - 1st HALF HOA DUES The first half of the 2021 HOA dues were due on January 1st. Any HOA Dues NOT paid by Jan. 18th will incur late fees and interest charges. If you are unsure you have paid your dues, please call the office at 480-895-3550 and we will gladly check for you.

PLEASE DRIVE - 25! Please remember the SPEED LIMIT in Cottonwood and Palo Verde is a maximum of 25 MPH. Why? Because we have walkers, pets, bikers and golf carts on our roads and we all want to be safe.

Some of us still work, so we must be somewhere on a schedule. Or, thank goodness, some of us are involved in our community by serving on committees or belonging to one of our fine recreation clubs. Again, we are on a set schedule. But guess what? The speed limit is still 25 MPH!

Please pay attention to your surroundings when driving on our streets. Please pay attention to the road signs when driving on our streets. Please use your turn signals when driving on our streets. AND – PLEASE WATCH YOUR SPEEDOMETER WHEN DRIVING ON OUR STREETS! THANK YOU!

FITNESS ACTIVITY CENTER Monday-Friday 6:00am-7:00pm; Saturday-Sunday 6:00am-6:00pm

The Flyer Fitness Activity Center Page 3

FITNESS MYTH & FITNESS FACT Fitness Fact The two previous articles explained “high intensity” training and provided information about how to determine training intensity (low, moderate, high and maximum). Now let’s add the term “interval” to “high intensity training”, making our subject “high intensity interval training.”

The term “interval” suggests that there are defined time periods within the exercise routine. Exactly! There are high intensity intervals (referred to as “work” intervals) mixed with low or moderate intensity intervals (referred to as “rest” intervals). Please understand “rest intervals” are not really a time to stop physical movement. “Rest intervals” do involve slowing down or using less resistance in order to allow the body to actively recover for the next ‘work’ interval.

Why should you consider high intensity interval training (HIIT)? Because there are many health & fitness benefits (based on research) that can result from HIIT, some of which include:

Slowing (and sometimes reversal) of decline of muscular function

Improved memory

Improved cardiovascular and respiratory function

Lower glucose levels – managing or preventing diabetes

Weight loss and weight management

Maintains functionality (quality of life) for a longer period of time (more years)

If you are interested in reading some short, but very good articles about HIIT benefits for mature adults, please email me at [email protected] and I will send you the links to the articles.

Is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) safe for the mature population? Yes, but there is a scientifically-proven progression that each individual must follow in order to ensure safe AND effective integration of HIIT into an exercise program. As always, people should be medically cleared for any kind of exercise program and there are definitely some medical conditions that would impact if and how a HIIT program should be introduced and progressed. That is why it is important to seek guidance from a certified, educated professional fitness trainer. Please communicate with me about any questions you may have. Always check with your physician before starting a new exercise program.
