Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! A HUGE THANK
YOU to all the club members who joined us on
Saturday for our Slice of the Valley. For those
who arrived early to help set up, it was
definitely a disappointment that the gun group
was still there and in no hurry to leave. This
put us under even more pressure to get everything ready for our event.
However, we managed to get things done through the hard work of our club
members. We cannot begin to express how much we appreciated
everyone’s help. We are still working on preliminary numbers and may have
those to share on Wednesday. Suffice it to say, though, I think everyone
will be very pleased.
Some of the highlights: Our Platinum Sponsor for this year’s event was
the Cafaro Company, thanks to Tony Cafaro, which will take us a long way
toward meeting our $10,000 goal. Thank you, Tony! Last year’s Platinum
Sponsor was Diane Sauer Chevrolet, another generous Warren Rotarian!
We have 13 pizza vendors this year and with the HUNDREDS of guests in
attendance, they were busy all evening passing out their pizza slices and
encouraging guests to vote for them. In the end, the winners of the Pizza
Challenge were Belleria Pizza (First Prize), Russo’s (Second Prize), and
Ianazone’s Pizza (Third Place). The Specialty Winner was Primanti
Brothers and the People’s Choice Award went to Ianazone’s. Thank you and
congratulations to all our winners!
At last week’s meeting, John Robertson again handled Fellowship. We
started with everyone shaking hands and then him recycling some stories
told before. He told us a story about a 1955 movie called On the Wings of
Angels with John Wayne playing the main character. John fell down some
stairs and suffered a neck injury that paralyzed him and our John quoted
one of the lines in the movie that went like this “Don’t touch me, call the
ambulance.”
He said he remembered those famous words in 1972 after he had a car
accident that caused his paralysis and used them when the first good
samaritan showed up to help him. Had he not done so, John said he
probably would have died. He said we should watch movies, pay attention
and use some of the wisdom shared in our own lives.

Foundation Board Meeting – The Foundation Board will meet on
Wednesday, February 22, at 11:30 a.m. at Enzo’s. Members should
confirm their attendance with Cheryl so we can be assured of a quorum.
District Conference Subsidy – The Club Board wants to make it easy for
members to attend the District Conference on April 7th and 8th at Avalon
Inn. Therefore, the Club will reimburse any member who wishes to attend
up to $40 toward the cost of their meals. In order to receive the
reimbursement, members need to do the following:
Go to rotarydistrict6650.org - register, pay, and print out your receipt.
Attend the District Conference.
Show proof of attendance to Cheryl Oblinger.
Get your reimbursement.
It’s just that easy!
RI International Convention – As you know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a
booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest
35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.
The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. The deadline for
early registration is passed, but it’s not too late to get registered.
Expect to hear more about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the
year goes by.
Hospitality Suite at the District Conference –
President Julia announced that Warren Rotary would
be hosting the Hospitality Suite at the District
Conference next April. A committee has been
identified and will be working on plans. More
information will come as the year progresses. Please mark your calendars
that the Conference will take place at Avalon Inn on April 7 and 8, 2017.
There will also be Golf Outing held to benefit the Women Veteran’s Golf
Program.

Eastern Ohio Education Partnership
Stephanie Shaw, the Executive Director from
Eastern Ohio Education Partnership, was our
speaker this week. Stephanie is a graduate of
Warren City Schools, YSU and Northeastern
University. She is also a former Warren Rotarian.
Eastern Ohio Education Partnership is designed to
bring a broad sector of community partners together to implement a
cradle to career vision for education. EOEP focuses on four critical areas
of student growth: early childhood, third grade reading, eighth grade
mathematics, and postsecondary/career readiness.
These community partners create, and are accountable for, a shared set
of measureable goals.
The EOEPMission: Collaborating to align proven practices for educational
success, cradle to career.
THE EOEP Goal: Prepared Students. Successful Careers. Improved
Communities.
Stephanie shared information on why EOEP has chosen four key areas of
focus. It included:
Early Childhood Readiness
Early childhood education matters! It can also be a predictor of future
success. Economic studies have shown a rate of return of $7 or more on
each dollar invested in early childhood through a reduced need for
spending on other services, such as remedial education,
grade repetition, and special education.
Third Grade Reading Readiness
In an executive summary by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Early
Warning! Why Reading By the End of Third Grade Matters, ”Of the
fourth-graders who took the National Assessment of Educational
Progress (NAEP) reading test in 2009, 83% of children from low-income
families, and 85% of low-income students who attend high-poverty
schools, failed to reach the ‘proficient’ level in reading. Reading
proficiently by third grade is a crucial marker in a child’s educational
development. Failure to read proficiently is linked to higher rates of
school dropout, which suppresses individual earning potential as well as
the nation’s competitiveness and general productivity.”
Areas of

Eighth Grade Mathematics Readiness
Mathematics is critical at every level, but students are often more
challenged in the middle grades. EOEP is working to leverage best
practices around what will work for our students. Families are encouraged
to take advantage of online programs such as Kahn Academy. Kahn, and
similar programs, or Apps, can help families start fun conversations about
math.
Postsecondary/Career Readiness
On average 10-20% of partner district students who take the ACT do not
matriculate in the fall. Harvard reports that 10-40% of low-income
students never make it to college the fall following graduation. This is
coined Summer Melt. EOEP works with admissions at Kent State, Eastern
Gateway and Youngstown State to understand why students aren’t
matriculating. They use a texting program that will deliver reminders
regarding enrollment, financial aid and registration. As students enter
area colleges, they connect them with Admissions in an effort to support
first semester completion. Recognizing that students don’t matriculate for
a variety of social, fiscal and academic reasons, results may vary each
year. EOEP works to close the gap, on average, by 5% by 2018. Boston’s
uAspire has seen an increase in on-time college enrollment by 7% their
first year.
We thank Stephanie for joining us this week and invite her to return any
time she wants to report on EOEP’s success.
