AUGUST 2021

Birthdays Anniversaries

17th - Anne and Ted Burton No Birthdays 28th - Theresa & Graeme Dean

Our President took great pleasure in inducting David Brooks to our club. David was proposed by Rotarian Chris, and is an ex Vietnam Veteran and also a past member of the Police Force. He is currently the President of the Veterans and Community Wood Centre (Men’s Shed) in Kings Meadows. A warm welcome David.

GUEST SPEAKER

Our speaker this evening is Rotarian David Annear who is on the Mentors Committee of the ‘Windeward Bound’. To celebrate 100 Years of Rotary the organisations have joined together for the Great Youth Challenge. (That is until Covid also joined in) The sail training ship is captained by Sarah Parry. Each training voyage is 10 days long and 18 young Australians join Captain Sarah to sail along the South and East coasts of Australia.

The participants are aged between 14 and 17 years with an interest in a personal adventure and in an opportunity to become a member of a team, taking responsibility, giving and taking orders, pushing themselves both physically and mentally. They may be wet, cold and weary as well as often frightened and possibly sea sick. There is no-one to make their bed and no takeaways or sleeping in. The jobs list is endless but so are the rewards. It can be a life-altering experience as many will attest to.

The ship is 33metres long and 6 metres wide and it takes $4,500 a day to run when sailing. Each participant pays $2,500 for the trip. This year it has cost $635,000 to give 198 young people the trip of a lifetime. The program is fortunate to receive financial support from a number of sponsors. As a result, some Bursaries and Scholarships are available to applicants who can demonstrate a financial need. Our club has supported participants in the project in the past.
