CELEBRATING 40 YEARS of SERVICE to our
COMMUNITY
President Paul welcomed our guest speaker Rotarian David Annear, from the Rotary Club of West Tamar, to the meeting as well as guests Theresa Dean and David Brooks. Community Service Director Chris has received a letter from Rotarian Sandy Astill regarding ‘Launceston Carols by Candlelight’ which is being held at the Country Club Casino for the first time on 18th December 2021. Our club has been asked to help with parking on the night. Club Service Director Tas reported that 380 bags of sheep manure were collected last Thursday and the barbecue that followed was a welcome chance for a rest and good fellowship. 50 bags were donated to Gastroparesis and 30 to the Rotary Community Garden. Vocational Service Director Judy has been working on several ideas for vocational visits throughout the year. Also a REMINDER that the Bulldog Bistro night is THIS FRIDAY 13th August at 6.00pm. Youth Services Director Gwen has now confirmed that we will require about 6 members to help out at RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) on Friday 22nd October. Thankyou to all those that have volunteered their time. We may be asked to assist on another date as well. Details will follow.

Birthdays Anniversaries
17th - Anne and Ted Burton No Birthdays 28th - Theresa & Graeme Dean
Our President took great pleasure in inducting David Brooks to our club. David was proposed by Rotarian Chris, and is an ex Vietnam Veteran and also a past member of the Police Force. He is currently the President of the Veterans and Community Wood Centre (Men’s Shed) in Kings Meadows. A warm welcome David.
GUEST SPEAKER
Our speaker this evening is Rotarian David Annear who is on the Mentors Committee of the ‘Windeward Bound’. To celebrate 100 Years of Rotary the organisations have joined together for the Great Youth Challenge. (That is until Covid also joined in) The sail training ship is captained by Sarah Parry. Each training voyage is 10 days long and 18 young Australians join Captain Sarah to sail along the South and East coasts of Australia.
The participants are aged between 14 and 17 years with an interest in a personal adventure and in an opportunity to become a member of a team, taking responsibility, giving and taking orders, pushing themselves both physically and mentally. They may be wet, cold and weary as well as often frightened and possibly sea sick. There is no-one to make their bed and no takeaways or sleeping in. The jobs list is endless but so are the rewards. It can be a life-altering experience as many will attest to.
The ship is 33metres long and 6 metres wide and it takes $4,500 a day to run when sailing. Each participant pays $2,500 for the trip. This year it has cost $635,000 to give 198 young people the trip of a lifetime. The program is fortunate to receive financial support from a number of sponsors. As a result, some Bursaries and Scholarships are available to applicants who can demonstrate a financial need. Our club has supported participants in the project in the past.
