President’s Report.

At our meeting held on Thursday Feb 9 we welcomed visiting Rotarians in Bob Edgar (Rotary Club of Bendigo), Greg Penno (Rotary Club of Bendigo Strathdale) along with Alan Hawken and partner Lorna Mc Donald representing the Rotary Club of Echuca. Also Heather Nixon and our exchange student Toshiya Yanagisawa were also in attendance. Something I found most personally pleasing about this meeting was the high level of involvement of many of our newer members. Firstly we had Elizabeth inviting along a prospective new member to our club. Clive and Zoe both greeting our guests and collecting the money with Glenn chairing the meeting, Jennie making arrangements for our visit to Fortuna next week and most importantly listening to another new member in the role as guest speaker-namely Jane Robson. Jane recently moved from Ballarat to Bendigo to assume the role as the manager of The Bendigo YMCA. It was evident from the questions and comments made by members at the conclusion of Jane’s address that many had fond memories of a number of YMCA sponsored events going back further than perhaps we would all care to remember. Secondly, that we were not really aware of the many current involvements, especially in the area of child care, that our local YMCA is engaged in. Jane pointed out currently 60% percent of its local commitments were directed towards children below 12 years of age and this is a bit unique to Bendigo. She also stated a desire to perhaps raise its level of involvement with more youth related projects. Perhaps here will be some opportunities for our club to form another community partnership sometime in future? Toshi has been enlisted via Wayne Smith (Rotary Club of Bendigo) to fill the role as a Japanese interpreter for a visiting junior basketball team from Japan. This is a very special event in that all the teams competing this week consist of players with specific learning disorders. Although their basketball skills are a very high standard. The Japanese team is the only international team with the other teams representing the states and territories from our country. We met the team and their three adult supervisors on Saturday afternoon and Toshi’s skills were greatly appreciated as their English is very limited. Fortunately Toshi’s knowledge of basketball is a real help too as quite frankly the briefings issued by the stadium staff, even in English, may as well have been given in Russian as far as I was concerned. It looks like Toshi may spend quite a bit of time with them this week of which he seems quite excited about.

Scott’s Day Out was hot but despite the heat many still managed to eat a few sausages and burgers. A good role up of volunteers ensured no one collapsed in the heat and the public were well catered for. It was pleasing to see that our long overdue volunteers register was being attended to with all signing in and out. Thanks to Ros for getting these sheets into a nice book format that we could all actually clearly identify. Finally, please pay in advance for the Fortuna tour this Thursday and be on its front steps ready to go at 6 pm. Dinner is at the National Hotel to follow. Anyone who turns up at the Foundry this week after all the notice we have given should make a substantial donation to The Rotary Foundation. On that subject if you have not already paid the $26.50 to commemorate the birthday it is still not too late. Also, it’s still not too late to register for the district conference in Shepparton. Meet the Group Vocational Exchange (GVE) team from the Philippines – Thursday 2 March

The Philippines GVE team will be attending the Bendigo South Rotary Club meeting on Thursday 2 March at the Bendigo Club, 22 Park Street, Strathdale. Various organisations across Bendigo are providing opportunities for team members to gain further experience in their respective vocations during the week. The team is being hosted by District 9800 for 4 weeks.

Rotarians and friends across Bendigo are invited to attend the meeting in order to meet the team and to hear their presentation. Please contact Lindsay Jolley ( 0416 192 032 / lj@joll.net ) by Friday 17 February, at the very latest, if you wish to attend. The meal cost will be $30 per person.
