It is my distinct pleasure, as the Publications Committee Chairman of the Guild of Students 2013-2014 to welcome you; our new students to the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. This publication, titled “The Signpost” is your Freshers’ Guide and was made with the single purpose of helping you find and understand what the campus has to offer you, as you make this crucial step in your life.

The first section of this publication is aimed at educating you as to what the Guild of Students is and the mul-tiple ways in which we interact and can help you, our constituents. Following on from this, is the “On Campus” section, which will give you the chance to see what services and activities are available at Cave Hill. Finally, paired with this magazine, is a Barbados hand book which will help you learn and find your way around the country of Barbados.

The Publications committee this year is seeking not only to keep you the student updated on all university happenings, as a result, we are opening our ranks to those with the passion or skill for writing, web or graphic designing, journalism, reporting or even photography. Those who are interested can contact the Publications Committee, through me at guildpcc@mycavehill.uwi.edu for more information.

Believe me when I say that this campus, though a part of the regional university, UWI, has had an international impact which struggles for measure. This year the Cave Hill Campus is celebrating its 50th year anniversary with the theme “Path To Prosperity”. This prosperity has been produced by the students who have walked these hallowed halls, sat in the classroom and spent hours in the library, diligently working hard and socially interacting and networking with their fellow regional counterparts, much like you will. You, the Fresher Group of 2013-2014, will be tasked with continuing the tradition of illuminating your minds and becoming a part of the light, shining from the West. No matter where you are from, you have arrived at this institution with a purpose; A purpose of excellence!

As you find your footing and calling in life at this University, I hope that all of you enjoy the times to come, persevere during the hard times and work, and when the time comes, leave this University with the understanding that the “Path To Prosperity” is one that you are now well and truly on. I hope that many of you find yourself seated where I and my colleagues are as members of the Guild Council in the next years, with a passion for student representation, a thirst for the wealth of experience and longing to be a part of an institution with a history of integrity such as the UWI Cave Hill Guild of Students. Everything you will need has been given to you; good luck, and make the most of it!

Welcome, The time has come and here you are!. On behalf of the Guild of Students, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Cam-pus. Your entrance into U.W.I. Cave Hill could not have come at a more magnificent time as your entrance coincides with the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Cave Hill Campus.In this its 50th Anniversary, the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, it is worthwhile to note that the Campus continues to provide an avenue for development and the creation of knowledge which has therefore made this region a provider of global intellectuals. The University of the West Indies has also been a model of regional integration for the people and subsequently institu-tions within the region, to develop significantly to better cater to the needs of students and faculty alike.

You, are now students of the Cave Hill Campus and as students you are no doubt ready to get straight to work but I ask that as you undertake your individual studies, whether you are undertaking Business, Medical, Computer, Governmental Studies or any of the hundreds of courses on offer. I ask you to embark on the path to prosperity and hold T.I.M.E in your thoughts. Embarking on this path not just as a student but as a future graduate and a citizen of this region and of the world, will yield tremendous benefits both personally and academically. You could look towards integration and think of ways in which you could improve it, follow in the footsteps of regional intellectuals and icons, intellectuals such as Dr. Eric Williams from Trinidad & Tobago or Sir Arthur Lewis from St. Lucia and Icons like Dr. Anthony “Gabby” Carter in whose footsteps you can follow and commit yourselves to making the lives of Caribbean people better.

I wish that as you are on the path to prosperity, that you acquire the habit of maintaining excellence.This is extremely necessary as you will need to excel in all areas to be able to reach your full potential.In large you have a responsibility to those individuals whom you will come into contact.This path leads upwards and as you are now a part of this Glorious Light Rising In The Westknown as the University of the West Indies, you should never stop progressing, continue to moveforward and at every level be driven Towards Integration and Maintaining Excellence (T.I.M.E.) and besteadfast on your journey on the path towards prosperity. I ask you to know that in time you will proveyourselves, not just to your family or to this University but to this region and its people who will looktowards you in return as a new found hope that things will get better.

What is the Guild of students?According to the Guild of Students’ constitution; All matriculated students of the University of the West Indies shall be Full Members of the Guild and shall

remain members for so long as they are actu-ally following a course of study approved by the Senate notwithstanding that they may have become members of the Guild of Graduates.

Full Members of the Guild shall have the following rights.

(a) The right to frequent the Union and to enjoy all its facilities and amenities.

(b) The right to vote at all Guild Elections and to stand for election for any office in the Guild except when debarred by lack of any special qualification.

(c) The right to wear the official University colours.

(d) The right to frequent the games fields and enjoy all the facilities and amenities offered.

(e) The right to participate in all activities sponsored by the Guild, and

(f) Such other rights as may be conferred by this Constitution from time to time.

WHO Are the Guild Council?The Guild Council is the executive of the Guild of Students and is the recognised means of

communication between the members of the Guild of Students as a body and the authorities of the

Last March the Electoral Office of Cave Hill staged the Annual Guild Election where students voted in a team of dedicated student leaders ready for service. This body of leaders is however lacking three pertinent members. The vacant posts include:

The National Affairs Chair Person (NACC)This person is charged with responsibility for chairing the National Affairs Committee and representing the interest of the Guild within the National fora.

The Guild SecretaryThe secretary is designated with responsibility for recording and making notes of minutes, resolu-tions and motions pasted by the Guild Council.

Cave Hill Association of Postgraduate Students (CHAPS) PresidentThe CHAPS President has the responsibility of representing the views of CHAPS to the Guild of students.

A By Election will be held to facilitate the completion of the Guild Council 2013-2014. The nomination period is set for September 8th – 13th. We look forward to Your input to Your Guild Council.

The Student’s Union is the place that students come to relax during their breaks or after classes. Affectionately

referred to as “De Guild”, this building serves in a dual purpose role. In the down-stairs section, you can watch your sports games on one of the multiple televisions or grab a drink from the Guild Bar. Meet new people or just catch up with friends while playing dominoes or shooting a game of pool. If you’re hungry, then don’t worry, the

Student’s Union is home to several food vendors. Not only this, but every week, the Student’s Union features the ever popu-lar “Union Social”, feted which are held by either the clubs or societies on campus, or the faculty associations. This is your space!

In the upstairs section of the Students Union, are the Guild offices. The first two offices you will en-counter, belong to the Office Manager, Ms. Cheryl Senhouse and the Administrative Secretary, Ms. Margareet Thompson. Also in this general area, are the Publications Office, and the Guild Library. The office of the Guild President and Vice-President are also located in the upstairs section of the Student’s Union. The Guild Conference Room and the Recre-ational Balcony are also available for student usage

and/or meetings, but please note, that these areas must be booked in advanced by requesting permis-sion for its usage from the Union Committee Chair-man. Always feel free to come by and speak to any Guild Councillor you may bump into!

The University Bookshop is conveniently situated opposite the guild lawn and is a student’s one stop shop for textbooks, magazines, stationery, electronics and refreshments. Open from 8:30 to 7:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9:00 to 2:00 on Saturday. Laptop consultation, cellular phone sales and top-ups as well as university paraphernalia and gift items are also available from the bookshop. Services offered include special ordering of textbooks, reservation of texts and document printing, among others. The bookshop was recently upgraded and now offers an array of new products and services for your shop-

The Campus Mart, is a convenience store located on the lowest level of the Clico Building. It sells a variety of food items, toiletries and other goods and is well known for their hot dogs and other quick lunches.

This is the most popular choice on campus for students when it comes to breakfast, lunch or even din-ner. It is located between the Student’s Guild and the Sherlock Hall of Residence. The Cafeteria’s menu entails snacks, drinks meals desserts, sub sandwiches and specials of the day. The opening hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday to Fridays and Saturdays 8:30 - 3:30 p.m.

The Kiosk, which is an extension of the cafeteria, is located in the parking lot in the vicinity of the Social Sciences faculty, not too far from the UWI Bridgetown Shuttle Stand. The kiosk provides snacks, bever-ages and light meals which are perfect for students who are always on the go.

HALLS OF RESIDENCE

FRANK WORRELL HALL is named after West Indian cricketing icon Sir Frank Worrell. This hall sits on the hill overlook-ing the 3W’s oval and is in honour of Sir Frank and his fellow Barbadian cricketing knights Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes. The newer of the two halls of residence on campus, “Frank”, as it is commonly called is laid out in several blocks of three storey penthouse styled accommodation, with a capacity for

approximately 200 students. Halls of

residenceSherlock Hall, aptly named after the Jamai- can born poet and Caribbean scholar Sir Phil-lip Sherlock, is the first hall of residence at the Cave Hill Campus. It is commonly referred to as “Sherlock” and this year celebrates its forti- eth year of existence. Located to the left of The Student’s Union and the Cafeteria, “Sherlock” houses approximately 100 students, each one of which con-siders themselves lucky to be at Cave Hill, but blessed to be on Sherlock. Each resident now must take up the challenge of passing on the mantle of the will of Sir Philip Sherlock, as they develop their intellects and improve relationships with our brothers and sisters; in this Diaspora we call the Caribbean. Not alone but together as a family. No you, no me but we.

The Pharmacy is situated next to the clinic, and is where you can go to either purchase pharmaceuticals, or to fill your prescription as issued by the student

For registered students the Stu-dent’s Clinic offers free healthcare services between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. On staff there is a full time doctor, two nurses and a nurse administra-tor. So feel welcome to walk in anytime or set an appointment.

In addition to the academic pro-grams offered at UWI, there is

also a packed sports program. From Aerobics to Volleyball, there is surely something for everyone.

University life can be difficult at times and sports can be a

great way to keep in shape and re-lease stress from school. There are various levels of training and activ-ity in each sport, so those of you who are advanced can keep up with your training, while those who want to learn a sport can start here!

During the first semester, each Island Association is given one week to turn Cave Hill into a microcosm of their respective country and showcase just what their country’s culture is about to the rest of the campus. These island associations make use of several events to do this, ranging from lectures, fun-days, plays, pageants, union socials and the increasingly popular and anticipated food days, where the Island Associations the food that is native to their home country for the students’ pleasure. All these and more are what make Island Association weeks so enjoyable!

In the second semester, every Faculty has the chance to display their talents and acheivements during their week of activities. Here you will also find panel discussion, church services, and expos. Carnivalweek

Freshers’ Week is first chance for the Guild to help you settle into the social side of Cave Hill. The week is primarily geared towards the fresher’s and is held at the beginning of the semester and some of the events included in this week are Christfest, the funday and Freshers’ Fete.

In the middle of the first semester, the IACC hosts Caribbean Integration Week, where regional integration is put at the forefront.

One thing that is synonomous with the region, is our love for carnival. Being the Univeristy of The West Indies , we host our own carnival through the office of the NACC.. Carnvall is your chance to destress before final examinations!
