Jane was born in Taihape and adopted by a family in Wanganui where she has spent most of her life, growing up, going to school and working. Given her current job at Harvey World Travel it is understandable that Jane has done some travelling, having worked in London, Australia and other parts of New Zealand. Jane feels fortunate to have the opportunity of enjoying the company of both her adoptive and birth families. She is looking forward to being part of the Rotary family and helping out on community projects. Welcome Jane, it is a pleasure to have you with us. Next Get-Together:

The opening and fines were in the capable hands of stand in Sergeant, Mike Green, who provided us with some impromptu entertainment. Mike, you were fortunate not to have pursued a singing career.

Congratulations to Bruce Kennedy for wrestling the raffle winnings from the clutches of the club executive.

Maree Langford introduced our latest new member, Jane Hickey, who joins us under the category of Travel Consultant. Maree has been influenced in her travel choices by talks given by Jane during BNI business networking meetings.

Club member, John Van Dalen, gave a very interesting presentation about the history of art in hospitals. He also updated us on his and Deon’s club project, acquiring art for display in various wards of the Wanganui Hospital.

From the 14th century onward hospitals had been known to have commissioned art. During his presentation John showed pictures of a number of notable art pieces that have been on display in Hospitals around the world at various times in history.

Florence Nightingale proclaimed: “Variety of form and brilliancy of colour in the object are an actual means of recovery”.

Studies have shown that placing artworks within the healthcare environment:

Reduces stress and anxiety.

Increases staff morale with improved decor.

Can be a conversation piece.

Breaks up a bland clinical environment.

Our own Wanganui Hospital has a number of artworks on display including, in the entrance, a painting of “Mother and Child” which was rescued from the old Womens’ Hospital.

The club has so far raised $3,750 which is matched dollar for dollar by the hospital. Last year a combined total of $4,750 was spent on art which is now displayed in the Surgical Ward.

This year, Photographer - Shayne Donghi with the assistance of Graphics Designer - Karl Pollard have been commissioned to provide photos depicting local Wanganui scenes for display in the main corridor to the Paediatric Ward.

Vice President Sue informed us that Wanganui conservationist Allan Anderson is one of 24 finalists in the prestigious Pride of New Zealand Awards which includes a People's Choice award chosen by online voting.

The People's Choice wins $10,000 for their chosen charity, and if Allan wins he will donate the money to a club favourite, the Bushy Park wildlife reserve.

To vote for Allan in the Pride of New Zealand People's Choice award, go to www.prideofnzawards.co.nz/peopleschoice/allan-anderson On the club projects and activities front –

Garth Barlow told us that so far this month donations from the River Market car parking had netted $555.30, with one weekend to go. On duty this coming weekend are Margaret Chainey and Deon followed by the Graeme Prince and Graeme Carey.

Cranleigh Chainey and other like-minded enthusiasts will soon be holding a meeting to discuss the production of a pamphlet and a video to promote Bushy Park.

Cranleigh also emphasised the need to bring along suitable guests for the Prospective New Members Night on 30th September.

The Directors have approved the sponsorship of two RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) candidates should they be deemed appropriate. If you happen to be looking for that essential piece of club equipment Peter Kamstra is storing some extraneous property, including items that may be useful for Carols by Candlelight later in the year. A summary of results from a recent club survey has been attached for all to consider and discuss at next week’s club forum.

MOUNT BRUCE A garden tour will take place in the Wairarapa on 7 & 8 November 2015 to raise funds to support the Pukaha Mount Bruce Forest Restoration project.

Details will be available soon on www.wairarapagardentour.co.nz Rod & Sharon went last year have indicated that it was really good.
