ULTIMATE QUESTIONS AND A SUGGESTION FOR FAMILIES
OCTOBER 8, 2017
Last Tuesday evening there was the Annual Red Mass which is celebrated to in-
voke the Holy Spirit on the judges and lawyers as the new judicial season be-
gins. It is quite impressive with the bishops and priests wearing red vestments
and the judges in their robes as well as the Knights of Malta and the Holy Sepul-
chre with their wives. As usual the Mass is offered by the Bishop of the Diocese
and this was Bishop Barres' first Red Mass as bishop here. He preached a very
effective homily and I would like to share a few of the points he made.
He noted that the famed Anglican writer C.S. Lewis said that the people who are
most productive in their lives are those who are most concerned about eternity. I
think that this is something that we all need to think about more—the real ques-
tion is how and where we will be spending eternity. We can be lured to thinking
that the present is what really matters—nothing could be further from the truth.
All of life is a preparation for heaven.
The Bishop said that in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola there was a
wonderful meditation on death and what we would consider important when we
are on our deathbed. This is, of course, not the most pleasant thought—but it is
one that puts all life into perspective. I venture to say that not many are thinking
about death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory. Sad to say, these great reali-
ties are often hardly mentioned anymore. It is often assumed that everybody is
getting into heaven no matter what they did in this life. The Gospel causes us to
wonder about this. Jesus said: 13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the
gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through
it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few
find it." (Mt.7: 13-14)
The idea is not that we should have a sad and depressing spirituality—not at all.
We should be joyful Christians who have great confidence in Christ and his love
and mercy. Nevertheless, we should not be presumptive and assume that it
makes no difference how we live our lives. It makes all the difference in this
world and the next.
Towards the end of his homily Bishop Barres cited the French author, Charles
Peguy. Peguy said that when we die Christ will ask us this intriguing question:
"Where are the others?" He is trying to say that we are not only responsible for
cooperating with God's grace and reaching heaven ourselves, but we are ex-
pected to bring others along with us. Even though people may not think this way
explicitly it is the mission of husbands and wives to call each other to holiness

and parents to make genuine efforts to see that their children grow in the love of God. One of
the easiest and simplest ways to do this is to have family prayer. Especially during the month
of October, the month of the Holy Rosary, it would be great to say at least a decade of the
Rosary as a family. It would take no more than five minutes. Why not give it a try?

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
It’s probably true that most Catholics have not read or studied the Bible. What
better way to get to know God than by reading His Word? The authors of the Bi-
ble were inspired to write what God wants us to know about Him and our history
of salvation. Reading and understanding the Bible is a sure path to growing in
faith and loving God for us and our families. By increasing in knowledge of our Catholic
faith we will be better prepared to present what we know and believe to others.
For many of us who need some help understanding the Bible and who don’t have time for Bi-
ble study there is a book in the kiosk by Dr. John Bergsma, Bible Basics for Catholics, which
is an engaging overview of the Bible that offers insight and is easy to retain. There is much
information about the Bible on FORMED.org (FREE with parish code 07d527) in the form
of books such as You Can Understand the Bible by Peter Kreeft, video such as a twelve-part
series, The Bible and the Virgin Mary, and audio dramatizations of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
John, the Acts of the Apostles and so much more. There is also a FORMED app available for
FREE so all this amazing information can be accessed on your phone or device.
May God richly bless you and your loved ones.
Understand, Live and Share Your Faith!

women in the Queen of Peace Residence in Queens Village. There the Residents are sur-
rounded with love, respect, peace and security until their death. The Sisters will be at the doors
of the church as you leave Mass to receive your donations. Please be as generous as your
means allow.

FOCUS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
FROM CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION

Churches Denied FEMA Disaster Relief in Texas:
Three Texas churches damaged by Hurricane Harvey sued the Federal Emergency Manage-
ment Agency (FEMA) for access to disaster relief money that churches are denied but nonre-
ligious nonprofits are able to get. FEMA “categorically excludes houses of worship from
equal access to disaster relief grants because of their religious status,” said the Becket Fund
For Religious Liberty who is asking the court to declare FEMA’s church exclusion policy
unconstitutional.
FEMA used hundreds of churches as shelters, medical centers and distribution centers after
the Hurricane. “But their policy has made those same churches ineligible for assistance be-
cause their primary use is, by nature, religious.” Becket counsel wrote. “Excluding churches
and houses of worship from FEMA disaster relief...risks the federal government violating the
constitutional rights of those who are playing an instrumental role in getting Texas back on
their feet.” “This is a time of crisis for Houston,” Becket said. “Churches are some of the
helpers. Yet they are denied the same relief other nonprofits are getting from FEMA.”
Museums and Zoos are eligible for relief but churches are not. “If Churches were to cease
all religious activity in their houses of worship, those buildings would become assistance-
eligible,” the lawsuit read” The Churches are not seeking special treatment; they are seeking
a fair shake.”
(washingtontimes.com, 9/15/17; frontporchnewstexas.com, 9/25/17; frcaction.org, 9/22/17)
In a June 2017 Supreme Court decision that a church in Missouri could get government
money to resurface its playground, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “The exclusion of Trin-
ity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a
church, is odious to our Constitution and cannot stand.”

LITURGY CORNER Lesson 12 from the Baltimore Catechism teach us about The Marks and Attributes of the
Church. This is a partial list of the questions and answers, but should remind us of the truths
we profess in the Creed.
*155. What are the chief marks of the Church?
The chief marks of the Church are four: It is one, holy, catholic or universal, and apostolic.
*156. Why is the Catholic Church one?
The Catholic Church is one because all its members, according to the will of Christ, profess the same faith, have
the same sacrifice and sacraments, and are united under one and the same visible head, the Pope.
*157. Why is the Catholic Church holy?
The Catholic Church is holy because it was founded by Jesus Christ, Who is all-holy and because it teaches, ac-
cording to the will of Christ, holy doctrines, and provides the means of leading a holy life, thereby giving holy
members to every age.
*158. Why is the Catholic Church catholic or universal?
The Catholic Church is catholic or universal because, destined to last for all time, it never fails to fulfill the divine
commandment to teach all nations all the truths revealed by God.
*159. Why is the Catholic Church apostolic?
The Catholic Church is apostolic because it was founded by Christ on the apostles and, according to His divine
will, has always been governed by their lawful successors.
*161. What are the chief attributes of the Catholic Church?
The chief attributes of the Catholic Church are authority, infallbilty, and indefectibility. They are called attributes
because they are qualities perfecting the nature of the Church.
*162, *163, *165. What is meant by the authority, infallibility, and indefectibility of the Catholic Church?
By the authority of the Catholic Church is meant that the Pope and the bishops, as lawful successors of the apos-
tles, have power from Christ Himself to teach, to sanctify, and to govern the faithful in spiritual matters. By infal-
libility is meant that the Church, by the special assistance of the Holy Ghost, cannot err when it teaches or believe
a doctrine of faith or morals. By indefectibility is meant that the Church, as Christ founded it, will last until the
end of time.
*164. When does the Church teach infallibly?
The Church teaches infallibly when it defines, through the Pope alone, as the teacher of all Christians, or through
the Pope and the bishops, a doctrine of faith or morals to be held by all the faithful.
*169. Why is the Catholic Church called the Mystical Body of Christ?
The Catholic Church is called the Mystical Body of Christ because its members are united by supernatural bonds
with one another and with Christ, their Head, thus resembling the members and head of the living human body.
Infallibility is often misunderstood. It is not a charism that belongs only to the pope. Infallibility also belongs to
the body of bishops as a whole, when, in doctrinal unity with the pope, they solemnly teach a doctrine as true.
This comes from Jesus himself, who promised the apostles and their successors the bishops, the magisterium of
the Church: "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16), and "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in
heaven" (Matt. 18:18).
