From the Desk of Deacon Tom Dear Parishioners, It has been four months since I was ordained as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Cleveland by Bishop Perez. Leading up to the day of ordination, there was a lot of speculation about what our parish assignment would be, and I was excited to hear that I was assigned here. My wife Lee Anna and I are very grateful for the many ways the community of St. John of the Cross has welcomed and embraced us. The process of Diaconate formation is a five-year process. The first year is called Aspirancy, which is a time of discernment to determine if there is an authentic call to the Diaconate. God's intention is revealed during the formation process. From the very beginning, it was explained that I would not necessarily be assigned to my home parish, which was Saint John Vianney in Mentor. The deacon is called to serve the Church and the community in three areas: the Ministry of the Word of God, the Ministry of the Liturgy/Worship, and the Ministry of Charity and Justice. The deacon functions in all three areas: service in the transmission of the Word, service in the celebration of the sacraments, and service in the community’s active love. I have been able to serve in the transmission of the Word, and most recently in the celebration of the sacrament of baptism a couple of weeks ago, when I had the honor of baptizing one-year old Treasure. It was a joy to see our parish community gathering around the baptismal font as we welcomed Treasure along with her family into the Christian community of St. John of the Cross. As I reflected back on these last four months, I realized that my connection to this church community started over thirty years ago, when my wife and I were dating. She lived close by, and we would attend the Sunday evening Mass at the Church on top of the hill. We loved the music, the atmosphere, and the vibrancy of the Liturgy. We were so impressed with the music that we asked a few members of the choir to provide music for our wedding. I am happy to say that the Liturgy hasn’t missed a beat (pun intended). I am looking forward to getting to know and participate in the different ministries of the parish. I am also looking forward to growing in faith together, so we as one body of Jesus Christ can go out into the community to search for the lost sheep and feed the hungry, both physically and spiritually. On Monday, September 16, between 6:30pm-7:30 pm, we will be hosting a Eucharistic Holy Hour. “We begin to grow in our “interior knowledge of the Lord” as we contemplate his words, his life, and his real presence before us (St. Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises, 104).” Please mark your calendars and spend an hour together with the Lord as we grow in spirit, knowledge, and wisdom together as one body of Jesus Christ.

    Peace in Christ.................................................................................................................................... Deacon Tom

Parish News & Events Our Parish Mission We are the Catholic Community of St. John of the Cross, established in 2009. Uniting the people of God as one family, we are rooted in, and empowered by, our sacramental life and Eucharistic celebrations. Living as disciples of Jesus Christ, we recognize our God given potential and challenge one another to share our giftedness, embrace our diversity, and engage in social outreach, service and education. In doing so, we seek to extend the reign of God in Euclid and the wider community.

R.C.I.A. Are you curious about the Catholic faith? Or do you know someone who is? If so, RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, may be a great fit! Throughout the year, RCIA participants are introduced to the Catholic faith through group sessions that involve discovery, discussion, and prayer. For more information, please contact Anney Roach at 216-289-0770 Ext. 107 or [email protected].

Recently I’ve had the chance to talk to kids about what it’s been like to go back to school for them. Most are enjoying sports, seeing their friends more often, and catching up with teachers that they really enjoy. However, a few have shared with me that they are not happy with their new routine of getting

up earlier and having to go to bed sooner. Gone are the days of Summer when they could sleep until noon. I always hate to tell them this because they’re not going to want to hear it, but having the regular routine of going to bed at a decent hour is very beneficial for their mental health. I remember when I was teaching middle school and the kids would be exhausted Monday morning because they stayed up late and slept in all weekend and were now playing catch-up. When kids are suffering from a lack of sleep they don’t get much out of school. Kids benefit greatly from regular routine and healthy sleep. If you don’t have any rules regarding bedtime and your kids are perpetually exhausted at school, consider instituting some new rules. While they may hate them at first, they may surprise you by feeling better in the long run and you may even see better grades on the next report card. Good sleep is not only good for a child’s education and grades, but also for mental health and development as they grow! In the increasingly busy world, make sure that good sleep is a priority for you and your family. With Prayers………………………………………………………...Luke Brown

Hanging onto Hope in Today’s World Presentation by: Sister Melannie Svoboda, SND Saturday, October 5th at 10:00am How do we keep our Christian hope alive amid the gloom that sometimes pervades the daily news and our personal lives? This presentation will explore the virtue of hope and it's relation to faith, love, courage, and humor. It will also suggest some practical ways to nourish hope in our daily lives. There will be refreshments afterwards.

Maggie’s Place On October 12, SJOC parishioners are invited to provide service as a part of our Anniversary celebration. We will be helping from about 9 - 11 AM at Maggie’s Place , located in Garfield Heights. Parish News

St. John of the Cross Tree of Life As part of our 10th Anniversary we will have a Memorial of who we are. It will be called the SJC Tree of Life. It will hang in the Gathering Space and be a testament to generations to come of our love and commitment to our beloved parish. I ask each parishioner to consider purchasing a “leaf” on the tree to include their own family name, or in honor/memory of a loved one. Each “Leaf” on the tree will is a $125 donation to the parish. We will install the tree in October and Bishop Perez will bless it when he is here for Mass on November 16 at 4 pm. Order forms can be found in the kiosk or our website.

New Holy Communion Stations In response to some concerns about the distribution we are making some changes to better accommodate our parishioners, especially the elderly and handicapped. The map shows that we will now have a person at the cross aisle of the main aisle (half way up) so the people sitting toward the back do not have to come all the way forward. In addition please note that H1, H3 and H4 will FIRST come to anyone who cannot come forward BEFORE they start their regular line. Please be patient as we make these changes. Thanks!
