From the Desk of Deacon Tom One should keep in mind that "liturgy is life that forms,

and not an idea to learn." (Pope Francis 02/14/19)

It has been six months since I was welcomed into this loving parish community of St. John of the Cross. On the day I was ordained as a deacon, Bishop Perez emphasized that the formation process does not end with ordination, it continues with the people of the parish. At the beginning of this month we celebrated All Saints Day and All Souls Day. We remember those who have completed their formation process and are now spending eternity with Jesus. Our formation process as disciples of Jesus began when we were baptized and will continue until our time on earth has come to an end. When we fully participate with mind, body, and soul in the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we allow the divinity of Jesus to form us in His image and likeness of unconditional love, mercy, and compassion for all of His creation. The Liturgy is a beautifully written symphony that is authored by our living God. From the choir to everyone in the pews, everyone’s participation has a significant role. I am happy to be serving alongside all those who are ministering during the Liturgy. I am grateful for everyone’s patience and assistance as I navigate the ins and outs of coordinating the liturgical ministers’ schedules. I am still fine-tuning the next quarter schedule, and it should be ready by Friday, November 8. We are always in need of Altar Servers, both adults and children, Readers of the Sacred Scripture (lectors), Extra-Ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Ushers and Greeters. If you have considered becoming a member of the Liturgical Ministry, please contact me either by email, [email protected], or call 216-289-0770 Ext. 112. Have a blessed week, Deacon Tom

Our Parish Mission We are the Catholic Community of St. John of the Cross, established in 2009. Uniting the people of God as one family, we are rooted in, and empowered by, our sacramental life and Eucharistic celebrations. Living as disciples of Jesus Christ, we recognize our God given potential and challenge one another to share our giftedness, embrace our diversity, and engage in social outreach, service and education. In doing so, we seek to extend the reign of God in Euclid and the wider community.

Mass Intentions for the Week

Gospel Meditation

“Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus …” In this Sunday’s Gospel, the Sadducees avoid the real question: Is there a resurrection from the dead or not? Rather than ask this question point blank, the Sadducees try to prove their point through a roundabout, unrealistic scenario. Jesus cuts straight to the question behind the question, citing Scripture passages relating to the resurrection. The Sadducees are trying to trick Jesus. While we may not intend to stump God, our doubts and questions may have more in common with the Sadducees than we care to admit. Doubts are part and parcel of life in a fallen world. Still, there are different ways we can word our doubts to ourselves, God, and others. When we’re struggling; truly struggling; about some article of faith, do we admit it? Or do we cloak it with other, obtuse questions to hide the nature of our concern? Have you considered leaving the Church over the hypocrisy of some of her members and leaders? Perhaps the real question is: How can a place blessed by God and instituted by Christ have this evil in it? Can I reconcile with the concept that an institution has an admixture of good and bad? What do I expect from others, from myself? What responsibility do I have to try and remedy evil in an institution I’m part of? Perhaps you’ve wondered about the nature of romantic love, and if God is love, does He really care so much about the details of this particular scenario? Perhaps the real question is: Can my mind wrap around the concept of a God whose law seems — on the surface, in this situation — to make people unhappy? What is the relationship between the moral law and human flourishing? These aren’t easy questions, but they are more honest ones. This week, don’t be afraid of your deeper questions! Bring them to God, to someone you trust, and to yourself.

Luke Brown’s Reflection Advent is coming up fast! As I’ve grown in my faith, I’ve started to think about Advent as being similar to Lent in a lot of ways. Both involve waiting and preparing ourselves for God’s presence and mercy. Many people dread Lent because on the surface it means giving things up, including meat on Fridays. I grew up on a beef ranch; the selfish part of me really struggles to give that meat one up. However, preparing our hearts for Christ cannot be reduced to simply giving things up in the same way we begrudgingly give up certain foods to lose weight or habits for our health. If you’re viewing your sacrifice of ice cream or Netflix as simply following some archaic practice the Church requires and not as a chance to pray more, love more, and focus on God more, you’re doing it wrong. The meaning behind the call to sacrifice is to rely entirely on Christ. We sacrifice the base, finite, and lowly things of this world to make room for the coming of Christ into our hearts. If you haven’t already, I would suggest reflecting on this message in relation to the upcoming season of Advent! The more we make room for Christ in our hearts, the better our mental health is. The more we base caring for our mental health on the infinite, eternal, and loving Christ and less on the base, finite, and fake promises this world offers, the more peaceful our hearts will be. This week, consider praying about how you can improve your prayer life and mental health during the upcoming Advent season.

A Prayer for Veterans Veterans Day is Monday 11/11

Heavenly Father, King and Lord, You instill in all of Your creation an order and value. You call Your children "very good." We surrender to You the conflicts

that tear your family apart. We pray for an end to blindness that places pride, greed, power, and selfishness above human dignity and brotherly love. We pray in gratitude for all of those who have defended peace, virtue, and justice with honor. We pray especially for those who have suffered in mind and body from the ravages of war. Let Your Kingdom come! May Your peace that surpasses all understanding reign in our hearts and in our world. Amen.

Fr. Mehok’s Scripture Study The Gospel of St. Matthew will be studied on Monday evenings at 7:30pm in Room 10 in the Community Center.

We are asking each parishioner to consider obtaining a “leaf” on the tree with a $125 donation. Your leaf can display your family name(s), honor a graduate of St. Felicitas or St. Paul, remember a deceased parishioner, etc. Order forms can be found in the kiosk or on our website.
