Challenges
Giving Hope to a World of Need 7
• Negative cultural beliefs- centralized feaces, sharing with in laws, children and adults
• Low value attached to construction and usage of latrines
• Communities indicate there is high cost & time related to construction of latrine( digging pit)
• Lack of skills and tools for construction
• Environmental conditions- hard rock formation and high water tables
• Latrines not prioritized- people prefer open, airy places-latrines smell
Giving Hope to a World of Need 8
Follow up Crucial
• for both demand driven and subsidy. Case of CLTS soon after triggering ensure that communities keep up the pace and momentum in the progression towards attaining total sanitation.
Joint reviews and sharing of Results
• Encourages households that have lagged behind effecting the collective decision to act sooner.
Close collaboration with Government
• The close working relations developed between the project team and the Ministry of public health and sanitation has ensured systematic monitoring of progress at community
Role of Local/Natural Leaders- central/key
• It’s important to offer support supervision to the community based committees/natural leaders taking lead the process to ensure efforts remains viable and on track.
