Research Shows that….

Patients’ outcomes improve when clinicians use evidence-based practice (EBP)

Clinicians identify multiple barriers to their use of EBP and engagement with research at the bedside

Mentorship is effective in furthering EBP and research

Practice-based Research Challenge

Goals:

•Improve patient care

•Engage point-of-care staff in research, quality improvement, evaluation & evidence-based practice

•Create excitement in workplace around research

Components of Research Challenge

Workshops: literature reviews, research methods, research ethics

Mentorship: one per team

Funding: up to $4000

Page 7: Role of the Mentor in Supporting Clinicians in Research & Quality Improvement

Participation in First 5 Years

•350 clinicians

•51 mentors

•60 teams funded

Achievements of Funded Teams

•Practice changes leading to improvements in patient care

•66 conference abstracts/grand rounds lectures

•7 manuscripts published; 9 others being prepared

•2 projects expanded and awarded additional funding, including a CIHR Catalyst Grant

•Evaluation of program overwhelmingly positive

Project Examples • 3 studies on needs of HIV patients

led to changes in dietitian support & psychological support for this group of patients. Findings published in The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care

• Individualized hemophilia treatment reduced bleeds & increased physical activity ; 2 publications being submitted

• Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Implantation - Program changed approach to better support patients’ decisions; mentors for team awarded CIHR Catalyst Grant; published paper in The European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing
