• Shock resistance: Led’s, being solid state components,are difficult to damage with external shock, unlikefluorescent and incandescent bulbs which are fragile.

• Toxicity: Led’s do not contain mercury or other heavymetals, unlike fluorescent lamps which require specialdisposal procedures.

Considerations

Colour temperature variance: Due to the complex method ofmanufacturing white LEDs the colour co-ordinates will varyfrom production. For this reason the colour temperature maybe different by as much as +/- 10%.

High initial price: Led’s can be more expensive, price perlumen, on an initial capital cost basis, than most conventionallighting technologies. The additional expense partially stemsfrom the drive circuitry and power supplies needed.

However, the initial outlay is more than compensated forwhen you look at the energy saving’s over the lifetime of thefitting. With electricity costs escalating the payback periodson LED fittings are becoming ever shorter, with typicalperiods of between 6 months and 3 years dependent onusage.

Terms explained

• Lumens: a measure of the power of light perceived by thehuman eye.

• Binning: is the term used when categorising LEDs of thesame brightness and colour uniformity in their production.It is a tolerance system where LED chips from largebatches are isolated because of their closeness inparameters i.e. specialist lighting will have tight binningwhereas the typical commercial application will have a lessstringent tolerance because of application and costs.

• Colour temperature: is a characteristic of visible light.Colour temperatures over 5,000K are called cool colours(blue to white), while colour temperatures 2,700-3,000K arecalled warm colours (yellowish white through red).

• Lux: is the measure of intensity of light on a surface of aspecific size.

All ROBUS LED products use chips fromleading global manufacturers (CREE, SEOUL,LUXEON). All chips are tested for lumenoutput and colour temperature premanufacture. ROBUS efficient integration ofthese chips within our range ensuresreliability and durability of our products.

Advantages

• Energy Saving: Led’s can save up to 85% energy and sosubstantially reduce energy costs.

• Reduced maintenance costs: Led’s last an average of50,000 hours, typically 10 times longer than conventionallight sources.

• Reduced CO2 emissions: as a result of energy savings.

• Efficiency: Led’s produce more light per watt thanincandescent bulbs.

• Applications: Led’s can be used for all applications. Lackof UV means they are particularly suitable for heat sensitiveareas such as museums or retail (no colour fading) andtouch sensitive areas (animals or children).

• Colour: Led’s can emit light of an intended colour withoutthe use of colour filters that traditional lighting methodsrequire. This is more efficient and can lower initial costs.

• On/Off time: Led’s light up instantly and don’t deterioratedue to constant switching so are suitable for PIR andphotoelectric switching.

• Size: Led’s can be very small (smaller than 2 mm2) and areeasily populated onto printed circuit boards.

• Dimming: Led’s can very easily be dimmed either bypulse-width modulation or lowering the forward current.Where applicable we give details on which drivers to use.

• Cool light: In contrast to most light sources, Led’s radiatevery little heat in the form of IR that can cause damage tosensitive objects or fabrics.

• Lifetime: Led’s have a very long life. Dependent onapplication average life may be between 20,000 to 50,000hours, although time to complete failure may be muchlonger. Fluorescent tubes typically are rated at between8,000 to 15,000 hours, depending partly on the conditionsof use, and halogen lamps at 1,000–2,000 hours.

• Low temperature operation: Led’s are not susceptible tofailure due to cold temperatures so are ideal for colderclimates / outdoor lighting.
