W ell, winter has finally

arrived and likes it so much, that it has decided to stay! Many of us are either thinking of a warm respite from the cold or have already gone “south” but wher-

ever you roam, remember that PROBUS is always near at hand thanks to the internet. A browse through the National website pro-vides an interesting array of information about what’s going on elsewhere in Canada and I’d also commend to those travelling to foreign climes, a visit to a PROBUS club in your holiday location.

We kicked off our revised Meeting Agenda in October and it seemed to go smoothly alt-hough microphone issues seem to surface when least expected. It sure was a delight to listen to The Honourable Tommy Banks as he regaled us with stories from those first early days of “Edmonton - Jazz City.” Tom-my’s appearance reflects the feeling that most of us have that our speaker’s program is one of the strengths of our Club and a big thank you for that must go out to George Nikel and all of his predecessors in office. Topics and speaker suggestions are always welcomed by George. Our Annual January Luncheon will soon be upon us and is described elsewhere in this Newsletter. Please ensure that you sign up

and pay for this event as soon as possible so that planning may proceed smoothly. You will also not want to miss the opportunity to hear our celebrated and much sought-after guest speaker, Timothy Caulfield. President Ian Nicol introduces a new item to our general meeting agenda by giving a member “vignette”. We welcome feed-back on your thoughts on the agen-da format. Do you like the new order which puts the general meeting portion at the start of the program and finishes with the guest speaker?

16 Members en-joying lunch at the Bothy, a Scottish eatery on Calgary Trail. They had the entire restaurant to themselves for lunch, enjoying the food, time to socialize and es-pecially meeting new members.

Currently, we have 33 members who have not yet paid dues for the 2017/2018 year. Our fiscal year starts August 1, and dues were due at that time. At the end of Novem-ber, we must report the number of paid members to Pro-bus Canada (and remit national dues to them at the same time). Those on that list will receive a telephone call asking whether or not they wish to remain a member; if so, they should send a cheque to the Treasurer, John Holmes, or pay at the November meeting. If you do not remember whether or not you have paid, please contact John

Welcome new members

October meeting T he multi-talented Honourable Tommy Banks was the guest speaker at our October meeting. He has had an

unparalleled, multi-faceted career spanning more than 60 years in virtually every aspect of the entertainment industry in Canada

as well as a political career. He is a pianist, conductor, arrang-er, composer, TV personality, actor, producer, politician and

was a Senator for over 11 years. His topic was Jazz in Ed-monton. Tommy Banks began his career as a professional jazz pianist

in the early 50’s at age 14. He detailed the history of Jazz in Edmonton, recalling many of the old time jazz greats of our city in the early part of the last century. He highlighted the

theatres, showrooms, night spots, ballrooms and cabarets that dotted the Edmonton landscape in those early days of Jazz in the city and the great bands and jazz artists from across Canada and the US that played these venues. He also described as well the lively scene of the early day of music/theatre in Edmonton which began in the 40’s and 50’s.

New members Bruce Flesher, introduced by Jeff Allen, and Lloyd Thomas, introduced by George Nikel, were inducted into the Club at the October meeting.

Jim Edwards thanks Tom-my Banks.

Revised general meeting agenda

ARE YOU PAST DUE?

Tommy Bank’s presentation was followed by a Q&A ses-sion which solicited not only many questions from the large number of members in attendance but who also gave him a standing ovation.
