    1 INTRODUCTION

RiverFLO-2Dv3is a hydrodynamic and mobile bed finite element model for rivers. It can route floods and simulatechannel bed changes at high resolution and with remarkable stability. The use of adaptive triangular meshes enables

the flow field to be resolved around key features in complex river environments.

RiverFLO-2Dv3Argus ONE Edition user interface is based upon Argus Open Numerical Environment (Argus ONE).This GIS-integrated software system provides interactive functions to generate and refine the finite element mesh. It

also facilitates assigning boundary conditions and roughness values. By importing and exporting multiple GIS

layers, the user can graphically display the model results in a number of formats.

RiverFLO-2Dv3computation engine uses an efficient and stable finite element solution method that eliminates theboundary and hot start difficulties of outdated 2-D finite element models. This version has more than 100 new

features and improvements, including hydraulic structures such as culverts, weirs, bridge piers, and internal rating

    tables.

This users guide provides instructions to install the RiverFLO-2Dv3model, creating your first project, refining yourmodels and explains the fundamentals of the model and its components, as well as the numerical methods used to

    solve the governing equations.

RiverF LO-2D Post Processor ToolV3.1 greatly simplifies result visualization with this powerful capability that allows generating any number of

selected plots (water elevations, velocity, etc.) for multiple times with just a few clicks.

River AnimatorRiver Animator is a new tool to plot results including animations in Google Earth and standalone animations in

Windows Media Viewer format. River Animator was developed by Herrera Environmental Consultant in

collaboration with Hydronia and is distributed as a free visualization add-on for RiverFLO-2D.

2dMRI : Two-dimensional Model Resul t I nterpreterTwo-dimensional Model Result Interpreter was developed in collaboration with Northwest Hydraulic Consultants,

and is distributed as a free add-on to RiverFLO-2D v3, allowing generating plots and animations of profiles, cross

sections and observation points. 2dMRI capabilities include:

Step through time and zoom in on profiles or cross sections showing riverbed and water surface

View a hydrograph at any point along a profile with a single click

Plot a hydrograph at any observation point and dynamic animation of profiles and cross sections

HEC-RAS Data Extr action ToolThis tool will extract bed elevations from HEC-RAS geometry files and generate X Y Z ASCII files that can be

readily imported in Argus ONE and SMS.

USBR Hazard Mapping ToolWith this new capability the model will export support files to generate Hazard Map Shape Files based on the

United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) guidelines for hazard classification downstream of dams.

Enhancements for DXF exportExport the finite element mesh and velocity field in DXF format.

New Boundary conditi onA new boundary condition was added: BCTYPE = 25 to impose water and sediment discharge and WSE that is

appropriate when supercritical flow regime occurs at the upstream boundary.

New parameters in resul t f il esWhen performing sediment transport simulations, the program now calculates the maximum and minimum bed

elevation, and the maximum erosion and deposition depths at all nodes and writes them to the output maximum

    files: .MAXE,MAXI, _ENG_MAX.EXP _METRIC_MAX.EXP

New Output f il e to report f looded areaThe model now creates a file output the flooding area for every report interval.

V3.1 also includes various bug fixes and several performance improvements.

    2 INSTALLING RiverFLO-2D v3 - Argus ONE EDITION

This RiverFLO-2Dv3uses the well-established Argus ONE graphical interface software (www.argusone.com)as apre-processor to facilitate data input and display results. Argus ONE provides a user friendly GIS environment,

automatically linking the physical data in GIS layers to mesh nodes and elements. Regenerating the computational

mesh does not require re-entering the baseline data such as bed elevations, roughness coefficients, or boundaryconditions. The software provides a variety of mesh generation options to optimize the mesh creation around

complex river features. This enables the model to resolve difficult flow issues in a rapidly varied flow field.

Creating a RiverFLO-2Dv3project is relatively straight forward, but more importantly, its robust and stable numericalsolution method minimizes tedious debugging saving time and computational resources.

    2.1Upgrading from RiverFLO-2D v2009

If you own a RiverFLO-2D v2009license and are upgrading to RiverFLO-2D v3, you can follow the setup guide belowto install the new version. You can have both versions installed in the same computer and they will not interfere with

each other. There is no need to have a new hardware key. RiverFLO-2D v3uses the same key that works with v2009.

    2.5 Installing RiverFLO-2D v3 / Argus ONE Network Version

NOTE: You will need Administrator permissions to install the RiverFLO-2D v3.Also, in Windows 7 you may need tomodify the program installation permissions.

Using RiverFLO-2D v3and Argus ONE on a network configuration with floating licenses allows the programs to beinstalled on as many networked PCs as required and used simultaneously from any of those PCs. The number of

users which can run RiverFLO-2D v3and Argus ONE concurrently equals to the number of licenses your organizationhas purchased. As long as this number is not exceeded, more users can start RiverFLO-2D v3and Argus ONE and useit from their own PC.

    This section explains:

    1.

How to install the license manager on the "license server".

    2.

How to install RiverFLO-2D v3 and Argus ONE on the work stations so that it will look for the license overthe network.

The floating license configuration uses the Aladdin NetHASP technology which is comprised of two main

    components:

    1. NetHASP key (network USB hardware key).

    2. License Manager Server software (LM).

The License Manager Server allows the RiverFLO-2D v3and Argus ONE programs to connect and communicate withthe network key provided. The network key must be connected to a USB port of the same PC the License Manager

(LM) server will be run on. This PC should be on the same network to which the users of RiverFLO-2D v3 and ArgusONE are connected. Many network protocols are supported including TCP/IP, UDP, and NetBios.

    Installing Argus ONE Network Manager2.5.1

NOTE: Skip steps 1-4 if you are upgrading f rom v2009 network version.

    1.

Make sure you have Administrator privileges before commencing.

    2.

Be sure to pick a computer that is not often rebooted, since every restart of the LM will terminate any open

licenses. On the RiverFLO-2D v3 installation CD, open the folder NetHASPUtils, where you will find thefollowing files and directories:

    a.

LMsetup.exe: Installer of the License Manager Program.

    b.

Monitor Install: A directory containing the installer for the Monitor program used to monitor the

    number and location of users.

    c. NetHASP.ini: Optional Configuration file for the workstations.

    d. Readme.txt: a copy of this file (the one you are now reading).

    3. Run the LMsetup.exe double clicking on the file to install the required drivers and the LM as a service.

    4. Connect the Network Hardware Key (Red USB NetHASP Key) to the USB port of the PC you selected for

installing the LM Server on. (Again, be sure to pick a computer that is not often rebooted, since every

restart of the LM will terminate any open licenses).

    5.

Double click the file "RiverFLO-2D_v3_Network_Setup.exe" on the RiverFLO-2D v3 CD.6.

Follow the installation instructions on your screen to install both Argus ONE and RiverFLO-2D v3.7.

    5 CREATING YOUR FIRST RiverFLO-2D v3 PROJECT

This section provides a step-by-step guide to help you get started on a RiverFLO-2D v3project. This procedure willinclude instructions for entering bed and terrain elevation data, running the RiverFLO-2Dmodel and creating plots ofthe hydraulic results. As an example, a river simulation with available bed elevation data is used. The boundary

conditions include discharge inflow and water surface elevation outflow. It is recommended that the Argus ONEUsers Guide be consulted for further information on model setup and result visualization.

    The following steps are discussed:

    1.

    Starting a new RiverFLO-2Dv3project

    2.

    Importing Bed Elevations

    3.

    Defining the Domain Boundary

    4.

    Generating the Finite Element Mesh

    5.

    Entering Mannings n Coefficient Data

    6. Entering Boundary Conditions

    7. Exporting RiverFLO-2D Mesh Data

    8.

Entering additional Data and Running the Model

All the data files required to run this project are in the following directory:

    5.1Starting a New RiverFLO-2D v3 Project

To start using RiverFLO-2D v3,double-click the Argus ONE icon on your desktop

NOTE: If you do not have hardware key connected to your computer or the network, Argus ONE will display a

    message similar to this:

Figure 11 Hardware key error message

This will limit Argus ONE to run in Evaluation Mode. This mode is fully functional except that it is not possible to

save projects and even though you are able to generate large meshes for evaluation purposes, exporting is limited to

    625 elements.

A new RiverFLO-2D v3project environment is created in Argus ONE that includes a set of predefined layers as shownin the layers window:

You may add other layers as required. For example, to visualize model

results you will typically import them from one of the model output files

into a new data layer. Then it is easy to create a new Map layers to

generate plots from the imported results. For further details on the features

of the Argus ONE program, refer to the Argus ONE Users Guide in the

    directory:
