Rio 2012 Building the Social Movement Online
For Canadian Coalition of NGOs on the Road to Rio 2012
Primary Objectives
Working through existing institutions, civil societies, NGOs, and NPO’s engage broader public audience in Rio 2012 Dialogue.
Building a global social movement for individuals and youth to contribute to the content of conversations at UNCSD and create societal learning and change post conference.
Executive Summary
Phase One: Engagement & EducationObjective: Engage civil societies in digital media conversations and train social media
community managers on skills to share media and stories with their communities.
Phase Two: Build Community and Build SkillsObjective: Increase interaction and communication between civil societies and
establish working channels between online community managers, UNEP, and thought leaders.
Phase Three: Creating a Global MovementObjective: Through a participatory workshop create a cohesive social media strategy
building on the strengths of individual civic societies and their champions in a manner that lends to a streamlined global conversation and movement.
Phase Four: Online Dialogue to Offline ActionObjective: Execute finalized strategy from December 14th conference during the
remaining 6 month lead up to Rio 2012.
Phase 1: Engagement and Education
Objective: Engage civil societies in digital media conversations and train online community managers on skills to share media and stories with their communities.
Method: Webinar series connecting online community managers from around the world to share knowledge, engagement tactics and innovations.
Funding: Cost of webinar hosting , pendant on number of webinars. Outcomes: Civil Societies, NGO’s and online activists are equpied with the
knowledge and skills to interact with content online, engaging current community and stretching out to new members.Serve as a marketing function for the Social Media conference as well as give community managers an opportunity to engage their community for input prior to creation of global strategy. We are essentially training or own grassroots marketers. Participants are taught skills to spread content and share media online which they can use to engage wider networks.
Phase 2: Build Community and Build Skills
Objective: Increase interaction and communication between civil societies and establish working channels between online community managers, UNEP, and thought leaders.
Method: Create an internal communications network (Using an invite only page on Facebook) to share resources and new media channel events and release dates.
Funding: None
Outcomes: Increased collaboration and coordination between global online community members resulting in cohesively executed and synchronized online campaigns.
Phase 3: Creating a Global Movement
Objective: Through a participatory workshop create a cohesive social media strategy building on the strengths of individual civil societies and their champions in a manner that lends to a streamlined global conversation and movement.
Method: A one day workshop engaging civil societies and thought leaders in the creation of a global social media strategy to bring the voices of individuals and youth to the forefront of conversations in the build up to Rio 2012.
Funding: Aleksandra?Outcome: Increased engagement from civil societies in the execution of global strategy.
Through employing a participatory approach to creating a global social media strategy we will benefit from shared knowledge of relevant social channels as well as the digital limitations in different regions. Greater innovation and collaboration from offline interaction that will lead to more productive and efficient communications when executing online campaigns.Building stronger relationships across civil society online community managers and gaining a knowledge of resources both financial and human.
Phase 4: Online Dialogue to Offline Action
Objective: Execute global engagement strategy bringing individual voices into the preconference dialogue and enhancing and strengthening global community.
Method: Online community managers execute global strategy and participate in monthly webinars to continue engaging in enhancing social learning and innovation processes across civil societies.
Funding: Any possible cost to the execution of global strategies created. Eg. Prizes.
