NEW YORK: Rihanna is de-fending her latest musicvideo, which opens with aman being shot in the head.
Man Down, which prem-iered on Tuesday on BET, isa song about a girl whoshoots her lover in public.The video also portrays sex-ual assault.
On Tuesday, the ParentsTelevision Council calledthe clip ‘‘disturbing’’ and as-ked BET to stop airing it.But Rihanna says the videois ‘‘art with a message’’.
‘‘We just wanted to honein on a very serious matterthat people are afraid to ad-dress, especially if you’ve
been victimised in this scen-ario,’’ Rihanna said.
BET says it will continueto play the video, explainingthat the network ‘‘has acomprehensive set of stan-dards and guidelines thatare applied to all of our con-tent’’ and that Rihanna’svideo ‘‘complied with theseguidelines and was ap-proved for air’’.
Rihanna, who was at-tacked by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown inFebruary 2009, says shedoesn’t agree with violence.
Brown attacked Rihannaon the eve of the Grammystwo years ago.
He pleaded guilty to a fel-ony and was sentenced tofive years’ probation.
‘‘I’ve been abused in thepast and you don’t see merunning around killing peo-ple in my spare time,’’ Ri-hanna said.
But the 23-year-old saysrape happens too often andthose victims need a voice.
‘‘If I can be a voice for somany that aren’t heard,then I win twice,’’ she said.

Parton begins her visitin Perth on November 8before heading to Adelaide,Sydney, the Hunter Valley,Melbourne and winding upthe tour in Brisbane on Nov-ember 26.
The 2½-hour show will fea-ture new sets, costumes andmusic from her forthcomingalbum Better Day to be re-leased later this year.
Parton, whose careerspans 45 years, is one ofthe most successful femalecountry music artists,with 25 No. 1 singles and 41top 10 country albums.
