On February 13, 1956, RICHARD WRIGHT appearedbefore AGNES SCHNEIDER, Consul of the United states ofAmerica at Paris, France, beingduly sworn, stated he wassubmitting the following statement as part of his appli-

cation for a passport which he executed on February l3, 1958.In that statement, subject stated he was not then a memberof the Communist Party, but had been a member of the commu-nist Farty from I932 to l9L2, and called attention to thestatement he had executed at the American Embassy, Paris,France, on September 16, 195M. tr further details in thatregard.

The Communist Party has been designated by the a Attorney General of the United States pursuant to ExecutiveOrder l0h50.

On September 1e, 195b, RICHARD waxes? appeared be-

fore AGNES SCHIEIDEH, Consul of the United States of Americaat Paris, France, being duly sworn, furnished a statement con-sisting of answers to questions annexed to his statement. Inthat statement, subject identified himself as being the sameRICHARD WRIGHT whose experiences in the comunist movementwere included in the book, "The God That Failed." Subjectstated he could not fix the exact time of his joining theCommunist Party because he was a functionary in the CommunistParty before he actually joined the Communist Party. Heexplained that the method used by the Communist karty inrecruiting isof such a nature that the line or date of deter-mining the exact membership is very difficult. Hestatedthat to the best of his recollection, the date about 1933!

shown in his book, "The God That Failed", is correct. Subjectstated that he is the RICHARD WRIGHT who wrote a letter tothe League of American Writers expressing his views on theSpanish Civil War, which was published in May,1936, in thebooklet, "writers Take Sides."

The League of American writers has been designatedby the Attorney General of the United States pursuant toExecutive Order IOLSO.

Subject stated at the time of writing the above-mentioned letter he was a member of the Communist Party. Hestated he is not now a member of the Communist Party of anycountry of the world.

The following information concerning the issuanceof previous passports to the subject was set forth in his =passport file:

On May 1, 1939, Passport Number 6lh9h7 was issuedto the subject. In his application for that passport, subjectstated he desired to travel to Mexico, England, and Francefor a visit of one year's duration for thepurpose ofstudy,and writing. .

On September 1?, 19h0, the subject,by letter tothe Passport Office, requested the return of Passport Number$lh9h? which wastaken from his-by Imnigration authoritiesat the Mexican border on June 15, l9hO. Subject stated thaton October 15, l9hO, he intends to take a trip to the SovietUnion and will depart from San Francisco en route to Vladivostokvia Yokahama.
