    Homestead residents can

    select the space that suits

    them best from a selectionstudios, one and two-bed-

    room apartments, and while

    Homestead allows residentsthe flexibility and comfort

    theyre used to in a home

    setting, it also comes with a

    few additional advantages.

    Residents receive housekeep-ing and laundry services andthe campus features on-site

    amenities like a salon and

    a dining center that serves

    meals restaurant style.

    On top of that, residents

    can participate in regularactivities, outings, Bible stud-

    ies and non-denominational

    church services. And if resi-

    dents are looking for a ser-

    vice or activity not already

    offered, they can raise thesubject at one of the monthly

    The OBPA works to make Oakdale a placethat is friendly to both businesses and custom-ers. The group was founded by city adminis-tration and a handful of eager businesses, andthrough the years the networking connectionsand attention to local needs the OBPA provideshave contributed to a fertile business environ-ment and a thriving community.

    For OBPA members, the group gives themthe chance to keep their fingers on the pulse

    of their community. In turn, they bring theirunique perspectives to the OBPA, giving thegroup as a whole better insight into the local

    business climate.Bill Burns, OBPA president and president

    of Burns Insurance Agency, says during thenext two years the OBPA will be focusing onits partnership with ISD 622. He noted that notonly is the school district a large employer inthe area, it is also responsible for influencingcurrent students, who are the future leaders ofthe community. Connecting students with busi-ness leaders in the community who can serveas mentors would likely have beneficial out-comes, Burns adds.

    The OBPA has also recently revamped itswebsite, which now benefits OBPA membersmore than ever by driving web traffic to mem-

    bers own websites. The website also empha-sizes a higher social media presence.

    Strong businesses, strong community

    According to Burns, the association is avaluable asset to local businesses.

    The OBPA is all about the community andbeing active in promoting community events

    and businesses within Oakdale to make themprofitable, he said. We want to help busi-nesses in any way we can. This allows busi-nesses the opportunity to work with the resi-dents of Oakdale and others in the communityto improve their reputation and name recogni-tion around the region.

    The OPBA also encourages residents to sup-port area businesses by shopping locally. Thisnot only helps local businesses thrive, but alsoensures that residents dollars are reinvested intheir own community.

    Reaching out

    In addition to promoting local businesses,the OBPA takes an active role in the communityin and around Oakdale. With Holiday HelpingHands, the OBPA and Tartan High School stu-dents collect and distribute food and gifts to

    families in need each December.We have the resources both financial

    and relational to be able to address the issuewithout overburdening any particular groupof people, explained John Larson, a pastor atHope Church who serves on the OBPA boardof directors.

    Larson said that the OBPA is well-posi-tioned to make an impact with programs suchas Holiday Helping Hands because of thenumerous connections to goods and servicesthat its members share.

    Working together through all the networkswe have through the OBPA is huge, Larsonsaid.

    The OBPA also provides four scholarshipseach year, to high school seniors from Oakdalewith exemplary academic and community ser-vice records.

    Stacie Penn, of Carol Matheys Center f orChildren and Families, lauds the OBPAsscholarship support.

    OBPAs commitment has been there on thelong term for this, Penn said.

    While any single business that offers schol-arships may have trouble with funding in adown year, Penn noted the OBPA is able to

    At a time when cities and resi-dents face numerous challenges,every helping hand makes a dif-

    ference. The good news for Oakdale is thatthe Oakdale Business and ProfessionalAssociation, with its members and nearlythree decades supporting the community,is planning another active year in 2014.

    OBPA Calendar of EventsSpring Fling April 10

    The Oakdale Business and Professional Association will be hostinga Spring Fling at the American Legion Post 39 in North St. Paul. Thisevent will replace the annual Gold Plate Dinner as the associations larg-est fundraising, social and networking event with fun activities includ-ing entertainment by a DJ and a raffle with a major prize.

    Tickets are $50 per person and will help raise funds for the associa-tion that will enable it to provide support for many community programsincluding Holiday Helping Hands and scholarships for local students.The public is invited to attend.

    June Family Picnic June 12This is the one meeting a year in which the OBPA invites everyone

    in the community to attend. In place of the regular monthly meeting,the OBPA has a picnic-style lunch. For this event, the OBPA fires upa giant charcoal grill and serves nearly 1,000 hot dogs to local businessleaders, elected officials, families and residents. The event is free.

    Limited sponsorships are available annually. This is certainly acant miss event.

    OBPA Community Golf Tournament June 23Each year in June, the OBPA organizes a day of golf. This years

    event will be held at Oak Marsh Golf Course (526 Inwood AvenueNorth, Oakdale). Participants enjoy a low key day on the golf coursewith an emphasis on having fun and networking with other membersand golfers. This event is wrapped up with a wonderful dinner, auctionand awarding of prizes in the club house. Participation is open to thepublic.

    Holiday Helping Hands DecemberEach year, several thousand dollars worth of gifts and food are

    Recently the OBPA has increased itsinvolvement with Beyond the Yellow Ribbon,an organization that provides support to fami-lies of active service members of the UnitedStates military. OBPA members supply essen-tial services families may need, especially ifthe head of the household is stationed over-seas.

    One of the ways the OBPA raises fundsfor its community-care initiatives is throughannual fundraising events such as this yearsSpring Fling. In addition to raising funds forworthy causes, the event is also a great net-working opportunity and an all-around goodtime.

    For those involved in the OBPA, its easy tosee how the organization benefits both mem-

    bers and the surrounding community. And forthose not yet involved, Bill Burns encouragesthem to find out more for themselves.
