FMP Proposal

I intend to further explore the ideas based on simplicity but focus my attention on mundane everyday scenarios and/or objects to change and distort them with an aim to produce a publication and a series of posters.

I want to make people stop and think about things that they would usually just walk past on a day to day basis and for them to then be able to take more notice of objects or scenarios as they go by in the future.

This project has to be able to reflect the culture that I am in and it needs to still be relevant to society and audiences by the time I have reached the end of year show next summer.

In my last meeting with Mike I mentioned that I had attended the HTML workshops over this semester and was also thinking about possibly producing a website to support my publication and posters which he felt would be ambitious but worth thinking about in relation to producing a wide project that could be developed further.

Having looked back at my work I have noticed film has cropped up quite a lot for me in this unit and I believe that film would be an interesting outlook for my FMP as it would bring a new dynamic to my otherwise print based outcome and would add value to the focus on everyday life scenarios.

Over the winter break I will refine and polish my FMP ideas so that I can make an informed decision as to whether I will produce either a website or film to compliment my publication and prints, it is unrealistic to produce both.

The Relationships Between Anxiety, Mindfulness and Facial Emotion Recognition

Debriefing Statement

The aim of this research was to investigate the relationships between anxiety, mindfulness and facial emotion recognition. Mindfulness is the awareness of day-to-day experiences; it is the process of being sensitive to present experiences, rather than living life on automatic mode (Siegel, 2007). It is expected that a higher level of mindfulness and a lower level of anxiety will result in increased accuracy of facial emotion recognition compared to those with lower levels of mindfulness and higher levels of anxiety. Your data will help our understanding of the interactions of mindfulness and anxiety, and what effects these have of the recognition of facial emotions. Once again results of this study will not include your name or any other identifying characteristics. The experiment/research did not use deception. You may have a copy of this summary if you wish, and the research findings once the project is completed.

Covent Garden:

I spent the day at Covent Garden watching the people and the way in which they moved and behaved whilst moving around the space.I arrived in time to watch the stall owners setting up for the market and stayed until the last one packed up and left. It was interesting to see the way people moved around the market in ‘lanes’ and became irritated by those walking in ‘the wrong direction. It was obvious that the crowds were all very keen to retain their own personal space whilst walking around the area.

These photographs were taken to produce a series or laughing sequence that can be screen printed and produced into a flick book and screen print annimation as a test to find the best way to produce the prints and whether I can get them to look like an animation with a narrative. This will also allow me to work out how many frames per second will be needed for the annimation and how many screen prints I will need to produce to keep the annimation looking as smooth as possible.

Over this semester so far I have been able to work independently to produce a series of experiments that act as a focus for my FMP and conduct research that is relevant in relation to my final outcome.

When I first began working on my FMP I found myself struggling to commit to a sub-ject area to base my work on as I knew it needed to be something that would sustain my interest for a long period of time. I took part in a study for a friend on a psychol-ogy course and quickly noticed a link between her project and what I wanted to ex-plore in my FMP. I have spent a lot of time researching around the subject area of body language and found a particular interest in facial recognition and human reaction. It is this interest that has become the platform for my exploration and FMP. I have spent my time so far looking at everything that will be important in relation to creating a book and a screen print animation, including book layouts, binding, paper stocks and the op-tions available in having my book professionally bound.

I have continuously evaluated my work to be sure that I am not going off course or repeating myself so as to make the most of the time I have at this final stage and to be sure that I have all the skills needed to put my FMP into production.

I think as a Graphic designer it is important to understand human behaviour and reac-tions to be able to create work which is relevant to a particular audience and the be able to communicate it the most effective way and so I feel that my FMP is an explo-ration that will help me after graduation and allow me to communicate any concept physically and psychologically.

I am now confident that I am able to identify the right output for my designs and be sure that I am working to my strengths to produce a well rounded project.
