The renovation in C building stirred talk of the past as workers removed the

gym hall lockers in August to refurbish them for the upstairs mezzanine hall. As the work crew moved out the old lockers, one could reflect on the memories of years past when hundreds of 7th-12th grade students walked this hall...and now it was still.

Fast forward to the first day of school, the gym hall is like a street path adorned with street signs featuring various character traits. The front hall houses showcases that feature several high achieving awards for Athletics and Fine Arts in addition to the promotion of upcoming events at FCS.

The FCS campus was full of life on Orienta-

tion night, Monday, August 19th. There was excitement of the new 12,000 square foot high school wing and the renovations in C Building. Students reported to their classes while parents met in the Worship Center with FCS President Bill Monroe and Principal Jim Berry. It was a night of excitement with all the reuniting of class-mates, smiles, and hugs, and seeing new faces of all ages.

FALL/WINTER

2013

Thank you, FCS students and parents, for a job

well done! We had a super successful fundraiser that exceeded our goal. As a result of 20,000 candy bars being sold, over $60,000 was collected in the fundraiser. Students and faculty earned an extra day out of school on Wednesday, November 27th for exceeding the goal! Way to go, Eagles!!

The elementary grades kicked off the fall with

the spiritual emphasis that focused on the theme CHOICES MATTER. FBT Children’s Ministry Director Amy Giles took the students through a journey of events that always brought them back to the question “Do I do it MY WAY, THEIR WAY, or GOD’S WAY?” Students were given practical application that challenged their thinking...ultimately, we have one of three choices.

The first week of October was not only a week of Homecoming excitement but nationally known speaker Dr. Carl Kerby of Reasons for Hope, Inc. spoke for the high school Spiritual Emphasis. Dr. Kerby challenged the teens with daily presenta-tions both in an assembly and in the class-

room. He was an honorary Eagle for the week and inter-acted with students at school events. Dr. Kerby took every opportunity to challenge the students in understanding their faith and becoming bold in defending it.

Page 2 FCS Eagle Times Fall/Winter 2013

Carrying the “Choices Matter” theme out throughout the year, the kindergarten

and elementary chapels have focused on 7 character traits. A variety of speak-ers have presented messages that reflect a trait and then tie it into the impor-tance of making right choices.

Kindergarten also had a special chapel with local firefighters. The community helpers talked to the stu-dents about fire safety inside and outside the home. Freddy the frog joins the students in chapel each week by helping Mrs. Bry-ant and Mrs. Miles with the Bible drills.

Missions is very dear to the heart of FCS kindergarten and elementary

students! This was the second year students brought in their loose change to be used for assisting our missionary families in their ministries. With a collection of over $1,600, FCS will be support service projects for the Sterlings in Asia, the Buxtons in the Phillippines, and the Shadles in Ethiopia. Because of the gener-ous giving of our students, we were able to present a gift to LaMar Salley and his family while they were in Florence. The Salleys– LaMar, Joanna, Kevin, Matthew and Alexa were the guests in the elementary chapel in November.

Mrs. Timmons and 6th grade students Corley Keefe and Phillip Hucks present gift to The Salleys during chapel.

There was a cow in the house!

The Preschool and C Building were full of cackles and sights of hi-5’s as the Chick-fil-A cow visited the students to invite them to FCS Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A! It was a full house at the restaurant where FCS families ate, played and had a great time! A contribution from the sales that night was given to FCS!

Thank you Mark and Kim Drummond and the Chick-fil-A crew for a night to re-member!

FCS had six students to attend

the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Sr. High Fall Conference in the House Cham-bers of the SC State House on Sep-tember 24th. David Coker and Re-becca Kelley both assisted in run-ning the meeting. David and Re-becca are both currently serving SCISA as 1st and 2nd vice-president. They were both elected to these positions at the end of school last year. The executive student govern-ment officers, Hudson Jepertinger, Peyton Johnson, Gordon Wash-

ington and Garrett Coker, represented the FCS student body at the conference. This annual confer-ence is a time for students to see how a true meeting is conducted, give their input, be placed with another school for student exchange week, begin working toward the Spring Convention, and meet students from other SCISA schools.

Student Government representatives from Laurence Manning Acad-emy spent a day at FCS in the fall as part of the SCISA student exchange program. The students were escorted by the FCS executive officers. The FCS officers will visit LMA in the spring.

Students enjoyed making their wish lists out on opening day of the fair!

Thank you to the numerous families who supported

the book fair that was held in late October. The fair was a success with

very little inventory left to return to LifeWay! Hats off to librarian Evie

Brown and parent helpers for the hours and extra effort put in to making

the fair a big success. We greatly appreciate our volunteer workers:

Brandy Belin, Gaye Erwin, Kamden Erwin, Kim Hanna, Tracy

Logan, Vickie Richardson, and Rebecca Stewart. FCS received a

percentage of the sales which will allow the purchase of new books to

our current collection.

With all the holiday baking and cooking...please don’t

forget to clip those Box Tops! Turn them in to your child’s

teacher and be sure to place his/her name on the bag.

Thank you for supporting FCS through this program!

The 1st grade kicked off the school year with a family tailgate at the first home foot-ball game in September. It was a great time to greet and meet new families and

enjoy time with old friends. The activity ended with the students cheering on the Eagles for a video segway that aired on the WPDE-TV 15 sports program following the news that evening. It was a great way to start the year with excitement that involved the teachers, students, and parents.

A very special group of people that children love

is their grandparents! On October 24th, the 3K, 4K, and 5K students invited their grandparents for a special morning set aside just for them. The stu-dents presented their special guests with snacks and a gift to remember the day!

They were invited to take a trip to the Book Fair to see all the books and items on dis-play. Thank you, grandpar-ents for your support at the fair; that day was the biggest day in sales, and we were told even exceeded the in-store sales at LifeWay!

The Class of 2015 cele-

brated the milestone of receiv-ing their class rings on Wednes-day, September 4th. Parents, teachers, and high school stu-dents assembled in the chapel as the Junior class officers pre-sented speeches followed by the parents presenting the class

ring to their young person. Congratulations, Juniors, for reaching an-other milestone in your high school journey!

On Sunday, September 29th, the first

members of the Florence Christian Spanish Honor Society were inducted! The FCS chap-ter was named “El Morro” with the motto of

“todos a uno” meaning “all together.” The ceremony began by Señora Miles, our chapter sponsor, explaining the duties and responsibilities that will be expected from all members and also educating the induc-tees on the history of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. All students then lit their candle from the mother flame and recited a pledge to the chapter. All members then voted on officers and had a quick reception! Chapter officers: President-Rebecca Kelley, Vice President—AJ Baker, Secretary– Grant Heustess, Treasurer– Gordon Washington.

On Friday, October 4th , FCS celebrated our fifth Homecoming during

football season. Spirit week set the school spirit wheel in motion as stu-dents and teachers participated in the dress up days. On Homecoming day the school colors were in full array with the pep rallies, the rival powder puff football game, and a parade of the class floats that captivated school spirit! The 7th-12th grade officers led their classes in the production of the floats. The freshman class won the float competition with a summer scene, “Victory is a breeze!” All the floats were creative and displayed school spirit. Homecoming king, Gordon Washington, was crowned at the pep rally. After honoring all of the senior ladies during halftime of the game, Danielle Evans was crowned as the 2013 Homecoming Queen. The high school students voted on the Homecoming king and queen. It was an exciting and energizing week of “Eagle spirit”! From the youngest to the oldest, the fan to the football player….the royal blue and

gold colors were shining bright as the Eagles landed a big victory over Spartanburg Christian Academy that night!

Popular The familiar songs performed included Supercalifragi- listicexpialdocious, Chim-Chim-Cher-ee, and Spoonful of Sugar. The production was under the direction of Mrs. Leslie Evans.

Under the direction of Mrs. Megan Kendall, the high school drama team presented the one-act play The Devil and Danielle Webster as the second segment of An Evening of the Stage production. The team per-formed the play in October at the SCISA One-Act Regional competition in October and won first place.

Rebecca Kelley received “Best Actress” at the state competition.

The Junior High drama presented the classic Little Princess to the 1st-3rd grade classes on November 21st. They captivated their young audi-ence. The play was under the direc-tion of Mrs. Megan Kendall. Mrs. Kendall concluded the play by bring-ing in a spiritual application that corre-lated with this year’s Chapel theme of “Choices Matter”.

Veteran Affairs Chief Officer Randy Godbold addresses students

Fall/Winter 2013 FCS Eagle Times Page 5

Following the Salute to Veterans program, the 5th and 6th grade

students assembled in the chapel to participate in a forum with a num-ber of veterans and active military personnel. The panel of servicemen and women shared military stories and answered questions posed to them by students. They were so grateful to the students for their interest in veterans and the support of current active military personnel. It was an impacting opportunity for this young generation to understand where their freedom comes from and the importance of understanding why we honor these men and women... our real life heroes!

The seventh annual A Salute to Veter-ans was presented to hundreds of veter-ans, family members, friends, and stu-dents on Thursday, November 7th, in the Worship Center auditorium.

The 5K bells opened the program playing patriotic favorites followed by instrumental selections. The elementary and high school choirs sang a number of songs that reflected love of our nation, appreciation for our vet-erans, and a tribute to those who have given their lives for freedom in the song and skit Honor to Serve. Guest Soloist Forrest Stanley paid tribute to the POW/MIAs through a personal story of his grandfather and great uncle. The veterans and military guests received a gift of appreciation from the students.

Sgt. Ross Coffee of the

82nd Airborne Division sent a flag to Mrs. Harsh and the 6th grade class in apprecia-tion for their prayers and support during his tour two years ago. The flag was flown in August of 2012 by Task Force Corsair pilots on combat missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. On behalf of Sgt. Coffee and his division, Coffee’s mother Kim Jones made the presentation to the group. This is the third American flag that has been presented to our school as appreciation for the support of US troops! All the flags have been flown over seas in honor of Florence Christian School.

Twenty-eight FCS students were nominated to participate among

300 choir members from SCISA schools statewide in the Choral Clinic at the USC School of Music. The clinic was held on October 17th. Under the lead of a guest conductor, students were taught a variety of vocal techniques and experienced performing in a large choir of talented sing-ers. The middle school and high school choirs rehearsed two songs that were performed in the Recital Hall.

Congratulations to Rebecca Kelley, Danielle Evans, Daniel Isgett, David Coker, and Garrett Coker for being

nominated to the All-State Chorus. The chorus performed at the Fall Headmaster’s Meeting in November.

The middle and high school choirs visited the Bethesda Home to

sing patriotic songs to the residents on November 7th. They saw some familiar faces among the crowd. The residents enjoyed the music, and the students enjoyed the fellowship!

Annual traditions in Mrs.
