PRINCIPAL’S NEWS News 6, Term 1 2017
Shrove Tuesday / Ash Wednesday / Lent
Lent is the most prominent and important season in our Church calendar. This week we recognise Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent). Lent is a special time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent is a penitential season of prayer, self-denial and helping others. In this way, the whole Church prepares for Easter with those who are to be baptised at Easter.
Please refer to Mrs Anderson’s section for additional details concerning how we will mark these significant events.
Early Years Open Afternoon
Years Open Afternoon takes place next Wednesday afternoon, 8 March, 3:30-4:30pm. It will be a great community event. Come and see our newly refurbished Year 1 rooms. The Open Day flyer is attached for those seeking further details.
School/Home Communication
There are a variety of ways the school will make contact with families. While face to face communication is always the best form in building a relationship, it is often easier and faster to mass produce messages for families. At St Augustine’s our main form of bulk communication is via the following:
School Newsletter
Special Alerts via Email
St Augustine’s Parish Primary School Facebook Page
Hard Print letters home
SMS (linked to our school emergency contacts).
I ask all families to ensure your current details are up to date with these forms of communication to ensure you receive messages.
Regional and Catholic Swimming
Good luck to all students competing at the Regional and Catholic Swimming Carnivals this week. Our Catholic interschool carnival in particular will see a large squad taking part. Thanks to Mr Dolan for his continued efforts with the swimming carnivals.
Student Illness
As we pass the halfway point of the school term, students start to become tired and sometimes this leads to a low immune system. Parents are requested not to send students to school if they are feeling unwell or exhibiting cold or flu symptoms. Generally, one day off school can be a proactive way to recharge their batteries. Failure to do so may lead to students missing multiple days. Thanks for your attention to this.
Get Started Vouchers
We are now in receipt of 20 get started vouchers. As previously mentioned earlier in the year, they are primarily for those experiencing financial hardship. If you would like to be considered for a voucher please email: [email protected] and outline your reasoning. Those who previously indicated an interest are asked to resubmit an email. All emails will remain confidential. Every attempt will be made to be as equitable as possible. Expressions of interest close Wednesday, March 1 at 3pm. Vouchers expire March 6.
School/Staff References
A number of families in Upper Year Levels have been requesting staff references for students looking to enrol into High School. While we encourage every individual in whatever path they take in high school, please be advised that St Augustine’s does not provide written references for students.
A number of factors influence this position:
Professional school comments are listed in our report card and give a clear indication of academic, spiritual, sporting and emotional development;
We support students attending a Catholic Secondary School (References not required to attend Marymount);
Palm Beach Currumbin does not request written references for their excellence program;
We would welcome a conversation (email/telephone/meeting) with a prospective school to help a student transition to High School regardless of it being Catholic or Non-Catholic;
With parent consent we will transfer school documents (report/IEP/ILP) when requested by the school.

APRE NEWS
Year 6 Leadership Day
Last Wednesday our Year Six children joined with all other Catholic school Year Six children from the coast to celebrate their leadership as seniors of their respective schools. The children heard from the Orange Sky Laundry representative from the Gold Coast, and from Simone Fraser who is a successful barrister and former St Kevin’s student. Simone spoke of overcoming adversity to be the best you can; and as a person born with cerebral palsy she spoke from personal experience and with great conviction. Our school captains carried our banner which was displayed with all participating schools to form a backdrop to the speakers.
Shrove Tuesday
Our Shrove Tuesday pancake day looks like being a great (big) success. Orders for over 600 received! There will be limited sales at morning tea on Tuesday for those who have an appetite for
more. Our Social Justice Crew will be assisting with the preparation of orders and making sure they reach classes by morning tea.
Social Justive Crew
Our Social Justice Crew are a group of volunteer students who are assisting with raising the awareness of all students to the needs of those in our community. Previously called Mini Vinnies the new name gives the children an overarching named group who can publicise all of the groups that we as members of Brisbane Catholic Education support. These include St Vincent de Paul, Orange Sky, Catholic Missions, The Annual Catholic Appeal and Caritas.
Our first task is to support Orange Sky Laundry with a donation of $400 from the pancake sales. Our next fundraiser for the disadvantaged will be a gold coin donation ‘Green Dress’ day on St Patrick’s Day, Friday 17 March. ‘Green’ information flyers will be distributed shortly.
Ash Wednesday
This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday; we will be distributing ashes at a whole school liturgy at 11:30am. All are welcome to attend, adults will receive ashes at the liturgy and each class will receive a container of ash to take back to their room for a class celebration.
Have a great week,
Diane Anderson (APRE)
GENERAL NEWS
Chess Fees
Chess fees now been charged to the family fee statements.
Chess fees are as follows: Year 2: $316 per annum ($158 per semester)
Year 3-6: $332 per annum ($166 per semester)
If you advised the office that your child was doing chess at the time of setting up your 2017 Direct Debit payment plan, you may disregard this invoice as it has already been included in your periodic deductions. Otherwise, please drop into the office to pay this fee by 9 March. Copies of these invoices will be posted today.Thank you.
School Photo Day - Monday 6 March
Please take the time to read the relevant information on the MSP phography order envelopes and remember these helpful points:
Ensure your order is placed by photo day to avoid any late fees.
Ordering online using your child's Unique Shoot Key is the easiest, safest and most secure way to order. If you do not know their Unique Shoot Key, please call MSP Photographers on the number below.
Sibling photography envelopes are available for collection from the school office. Please read them carefully as appointments are limited.
If enclosing payment inside an envelope, please ensure the correct money is provided as no change is given. Cash, cheques and money orders are accepted.
Don't seal envelopes inside each other. You can pay for all children in one envelope, however each child needs to have their own envelope on photo day.
Photo envelopes were sent home last week.
For any enquiries, please feel free to contact MSP Photographers, Burleigh Heads on : [email protected] or 07 5668 9110.
Speech and Drama
Unfortunately, last Friday, Miss Parez became ill and was unable to conduct classes. The students affected by this will have two classes this week. Please be assured that all term classes are as important to us as they are the students to allow us to reach the desired outcomes by the end of each term.
Please make sure term fees are up to date. Thank you to the majority of families who have made this a priority.
Have a wonderful week and here's hoping our gardens get that much needed drink with the promised rain!
Kind regards,
Anita Eldridge (Specialist Teacher - Programme Director) [email protected]

Catholic Swimming Carnival
This carnival will be held this Friday 3 March at Pizzey Park Pool, Miami. St A’s will have a large squad (46 students) representing the school this year. Students aged 8-12 years will be participating and the full squad is listed on the front school noticeboard (race nominations are also listed). Each member has received an information note outlining all details for this awesome day. The team bus departs St A’s at 7:45am (students to arrive at 7:30am) and will return by 2:45pm. All the best to this squad!
Cross Country Training
Students wanting to start training for Cross Country or simply wanting to improve general fitness, are invited to attend morning training on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, at 7:50am (starts next Tuesday 7 March). Joggers are required for these sessions (black school shoes not allowed). We look forward to seeing studentsfrom Years 1 - 6 involved, as House Colour points will be awarded
and added to the final points tally at next term’s Cross Country Carnival (Wednesday 19 April). Please meet Mr Dolan in the undercover area outside the tuckshop.
Winter Sport
Over the next few weeks, students in Years 5 and 6 will be nominating and trialing in either Rugby League, Soccer or Girls only Oztag. A rigorous and fair selection proces will be conducted to select participants. Unfortunately numbers are limited and as such some students will miss the chance to participate. Our first round takes place on Friday 21 April, week 1 of term 2. We look forward to lots of fun and hopefully dry weather for this great competition!
